  • I absolutely love this! 😍 I had the idea that I wanted to make a ring out of a whole, un-modified lock pick and I an so pleased with the results. It’s stainless steel with 925 silver and I now wear it 😃👍
    Remember: only pick locks that are yours and that are not in use! Keep locksport legal!

    Picker and a jeweler here. You can use 301 stainless, but I'd anneal it first to take away the hardening. We do the same when we are doing a hammered finish, as gold, silver, etc. all get work hardened when putting the hammered finish on. Just heat the piece up, let it cool, and go back to work.

    If you make the ring too small and then put it on the mandrel to size it you could keep the spring holding it in round as you pound it to the right size paying mind to the directions of your hits with the mallet.. Then just wrap a thread around it so you could unroll it in a pinch. Make sure you round those edges! I cought my ring in a window sill one time and it peeled my finger like a banana. You could even use uv poly resin on the inside for a comfort fit and to keep from getting the green ring on your finger... cool videos keep up the good work. Thank you for what you do.

    I am historically a goldsmith (changed careers now but did it for some years) and your technique is fine. When ring making from bar I'd do basically the same thing though I was taught to use half round parallel pliers so that's the way I did it its not wrong to use the bending tool you used (I think if my mentor had one of those that's what I'd have used, but he didn't).
    Couple of recommendations though - you could use a half round file on the inside after braising to hide the step where the handle end starts. and also once braised: if these were to be worn they won't be super comfy because they're wide and flat inside so take some heavy grit paper flat on the table and sand them a little narrower (the alternative would be to make the inside curved like a comfort fit ring, but the pick doesn't looks thick enough to file that profile in), maybe take a half millimetre to a millimeter off both sides (leaving the pick profile undisturbed obviously) and it will be just a little nicer to wear
    Oh, and invest in a few polishing tips for whatever dremel/pendant motor you use. They make the pre-buffing bit a lot easier than manually doing it with different grit papers...
    Finally maybe experiment with textures - sandblasting a satin finish on, or doing a partial satin finish with the pick profile polished and shiny ... endless possibilities.

      @LockNoob  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks 😊 I just bought more grades of compound and some dremel tips as you said!

    Hey RingNoob! Nice work! I would like to see one with the picking end gold plated. I think that the contrast against the silver handle would make the ring really pop! But beautiful work my friend. What's next? Can I suggest a nipple ring perhaps? 😂

    Although I am not a jeweler, I have made rings before out of coins and nuts. The hardest part is contouring the inside so it is comfortable on the finger.
    When I saw the title of this video I got excited, I thought it would be a usable pick coiled up to wear as a ring/covert pick. But this was cool too.

    What a fantastic idea. I would bet you could turn all those prototypes into something. Add in your cost of labor to the cost of the test batch, divide by how many unit you have to sell, add 30% (as a profit margin) and offer for sale. Depending on price per unit....you'd sell hundreds a day. If you add a signature to each unit they become collector pieces.

    • @LockNoob

      No easy answer on this. they work in loads of locks, but like any rake, it is bitting and skill dependent, not brand and model :-) Take a look at my overview vids and see the range of locks i was picking - this is only the tip of the iceburg :-)
