    I like this channel because the editing is so minimal - no bullshit transitions, showing you walking into a door you obviously walked into already to set up a camera etc. Great information - and to the point. Thanks for being authentic.

    Marvellous! This video really shows how getting the proper colour is an iterative process in which you take stock of each stage and decide how to get closer to your final tint in the next stage. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely. Happy holidays!

    I've been away for a bit so I haven't had the chance to watch my favorite TH-cam channels. The good news is that when I was able to get back to it, I had four (that's 4) Thomas Johnson videos to view. Although always a push, life does have it's rewards. I wish you and your family the best this holiday, and a safe and happy New Year.

    You have given so much valuable guidance to your viewers and I have used your techniques to improve my furniture and refinishing work immensely. I would definitely be willing to support you through affiliate links or Patreon if you ever become interested in something like that. I recently purchased a variety of Mohawk toners and would happily purchase them through an affiliate link in the future. Thanks for your work in making these videos and your willingness to lift the veil to show how real world refinishing work is done with mastery.

    A Well informative video. Let me just say the green toner saved my skin on several occasions, once with about 10 high end cherry cabinets with pediment tops. Some how the med brown stain I had purchased from my supplier had one gallon mixed out of a red base instead of neutral. The guys applying the stain in the paint room hadn’t even noticed. These are Great tips and are well represented, but it also takes training the eye and mind to perceive the next step and when to stop. Merry Christmas to you and your family Thomas

    Excellent video! A true craftsman makes repairs disappear by toning and blending color into the finish not the wood. I've seen some real hack jobs done by "professionals" that while technically the repair was sound, it looked repaired. They were usually way too dark. It takes years and years of experience and a thorough understanding of color to achieve near undetectable repairs. You are one of them and thank you for sharing your expertise.

      Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration
      Well for starters I’d love to see
      -a video or a series on the ethics of restoring furniture. Something like a what to do and what not to do type thing. Like an ethics 101 for those that don’t know.
      -Another vid or series I’d like to see is how you get customers? are all the pieces you work on from customers or do you find pieces to repair yourself and then sell them?
      - And something specific on how you charge for the work you do... not asking to get into specifics on income etc... it’s just hard to gauge sometimes on how much time is spent on a piece and what is realistic to charge a customer.
      -Also a video on whether you would recommend taking on projects for customers that are challenging or that you’ve not done or had experience with but that could be good learning experience.
      -How you got started and any other background stuff I think would be very interesting also.
      - Anything with advise for us just getting into repairing and restoring furniture would be interesting along with how to get a small business going doing this type work...
      -Or at least maybe how YOU got started would be an interesting story to hear I think.
      I could go on and on lol

    This is such a good video. It shows just how valuable good teaching skills are. I would love to take classes on this and french polishing. Just for everyone's edification, it is not a perfect way to do things but it can help you to understand what colors you need or don't need and the direction you need to go in. Take a picture of the two pieces in good light side by side. Bring them into Lightroom or some other editing program and use the sliders to shift the different dominant colors into them to determine what base colors you need when you start mixing. For a beginner this will help you to understand how to shift tones.

    I am always impressed by your colour matching. There is more to it than simply using the right colour. Which stage it is used in the process, which grit you might sand with and the medium carrying the pigment all make a difference. Personally I get a wee bit nervous about compatibility of mixed mediums (or is that media?) Glad to see the birds getting their fill. I wondered why ours had spurned their seeds over the last week, till I discovered the feeders were upside down. I had unintentionally been inflicting mental torture on them. Great video Tom. thanks for posting, compliments of the season to you and yours.

    Thank you for the invaluable information you provide. You're helping valuable furniture survive for the future by sharing your knowledge. My question is this: after using a toner, do you need to use a sealer or is the toner also a sealer?

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, the toner is lacquer (with stain), so it will act as a sealer or even a top coat

  • @HBTwoodworking
    @HBTwoodworking 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A challenge that I have when following you is when do you use shellac or when do you use lacquer? I noticed you ‘lock” in some stains, dyes, toners, and glazes with shellac, but you finish them with lacquer. Additionally, I noticed you might use a couple of coats of gloss lacquer and top coat that with satin. Same when you use tung oil varnish. I kind feel like a mosquito over a nudist colony with all these finishes.

    Another fantastic video, Tom. Not only does it compliment your video on staining techniques, it provides reassurance that the end result can be achieved in various way. That said, as a hobby woodworker and furniture restorer, the finishing aspects is often be the most critical part of the job. A great repair, and or joinery work, I have frustratingly experienced, can be spoiled by a poor finish. To the casual observer it is usually the standout feature ensuring a professional result.
    The use of toners, looks to be a very useful and perhaps a necessary ingredient for success. I have never come across them commercially, is there a "traditional" or shop made formula you could advise on?
    I also found the introduction of the colour matching wheel very useful. I must add this to my shopping list.
    Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
    David

    • @johnsonrestoration

      Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes on all points. The finish is everything. Color toning is critical. Try "woodworker's supply.com" They should have everything you need. It's easy to make any that you need by just putting a compatible stain in your finish

      You’re welcome! It’s Tung Oil Varnish by Waterlox. The sealer is just the first coat of finish, no matter what finish you’re using. Often the wood needs more color after the sealer coat, and it gives you more control

    Hi, Tom. Thanks for the help you've given so far. My 1860s house is looking better for your videos. I have a mahogany bannister which is quite nice, but by the stairwell window it is very faded. Most of the rail is just waxed over a very old finish. What can I do about the colour fading? Hopefully something that doesn't involve many steps or needing to buy multiple products. Happy to apply many thin coats of stain etc. until the colour matches. Of course the fading is highlighted by the fact that it is in good light to see that it is faded.

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The best way is to clean it, "sand" with a gray Scotch Brite pad, and recoat with poly that has stain in it. You'll have to experiment to get the right tone, and it should take multiple coats

    "everything you need is right at the hardware store..." :-(
    when you live in Germany, its a problem ... 80% of the people buy their furniture at IKEA, there is no (marginally) need to restore old and high quality furniture ... I'm envious of your broad selection of restoration equipment in the US... you are the younger culture as a whole but with the "older" and better taste of furnish your homes..
    Great video! Cant find nothing comparable at youtube....

    Something I would be interested in knowing is how color work may look in the future. For example when you use green to take down the natural red that eventually fades from wood as it ages. What happens as the pieces age and their natural red diminishes? In 50 years will they begin to shift greener than the original as the natural red no longer exists in the wood?

      Thanks! The main difference is the different resins. They are both evaporative, and both could be called spirit varnishes. In use they are very different

      Thanks! Yes, you can. The glaze doesn't react with the finish, so any finish will work with glaze

    Unskilled, supposedly professional painters stained an alder library and front doors in my sister’s Tuscan-style mansion without first sealing the wood. Result: ugly, blotchy mess that had to be stripped. Painters were fired. (They’d earlier had to be schooled about properly disposing of paint rags and properly venting lacquer fumes. Lucky the place didn’t burn down!)
    Would love to see you restore a piece using only paste wax and steel wool. See how far you can improve it that way.

      @johnsonrestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! If the right piece comes along I might do that! Painters are not finishers!

      Hi, thanks for watching! That's a tough one, I have no definitive answer. Try sealing with a couple of coats of shellac, not wax-free shellac, but regular shellac, make it really smooth. Then brush on low lustre water based polyurethane, a thick coat and see what happens.

  • @foorsandyslilacs3157
    @foorsandyslilacs3157 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m not familiar with the term sealing the piece of furniture then stain or dye. What do you mean by that? And when your completely done with a piece is all you do is add a coat of wax and buff it out?
    Thank you

      @foorsandyslilacs3157 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should have waited until the end. What are the differences in using shellac, Lacquer, varnish, polyurethanes. How in the world do you know what to use. I’ve been revamping furniture for 40 years and now watching you I don’t think I know anything. I’ve always just stained & varnished. That bed I told you about just is very dull. It’s an antique and I don’t want to ruin it. My passion in antiques wood furniture. Even if I don’t know where I’m going to put it, if I love it I have to have it.

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use shellac on period antiques. Basically it comes down to using whatever finish works best for you. Sealer is just the first coat. When doing repair work I often seal before staining because it gives me more control. If I’m refinishing an entire piece of furniture I will stain the bare wood. Keep doing what you’re doing, it sounds like you’re doing a good job

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! That's my "color checker". A piece of thin cardboard with 2 holes cut into it. One hole goes over the original color, and the other on the piece you're staining to match. You can instantly see if you need more red or more yellow or whatever

    • @johnsonrestoration

      I have different dye stains, usually thinned a bit, and I can "layer" it on a little at a time. You can see me doing that in many of my videos

    I know this is a stupid question, but why should the top always be lighter than the base? Thanks!

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look at nice antiques, at a museum, etc. the top is almost always lighter. Due to excessive cleaning and polishing and exposure to sunlight, etc. It doesn't have to be lighter, but that's the way I like it. Think of the reverse, what if a top was darker than the base? It would look silly

    I see that you rely on alcohol soluble aniline dyes. I was always taught water based aniline were superior because they were much more light-fast. Have you had problems with this or is there a method to deal with the UV? Thanks!

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I mostly do restoration and refinishing and the water soluable dyes don't work for refinishing projects. The wood is too contaminated. Not to mention raised grain. Over all, the alcohol stains are much more versatile
