His ‘Tcherman’ accent is so thick you could cut it with a knife, but I wish I had ten percent of his knowledge of Latin...

I wish to learn about Latin and its origin. Which books should I read? It'd be really great if you could give me some suggestions.

+Anu Priya Well since we are here - you might try a book by prof Jürgen Leonhardt himself - "Latin: Story of a World Language" but there is a host of others:
James Clackson : "A Companion to the Latin Language (Blackwell)", James Clackson, Geoffrey Horrocks: "The Blackwell History of the Latin Language",
Tore Janson, Merethe Damsgaard Sørensen, Nigel S Vincent: "A Natural History of Latin", or Nicholas Ostler "Ad Infinitum: A Biography of Latin", and of course, last but not least - Leonard Robert Palmer "The Latin Language" - there are many others, just referenced the ones that I think are the most useful and fun to read.,

How to distort History. To leave the role of the Catholic Church in the survival of Latin is like forgetting to mention England when writing history of British Empire.

The Roman Catholic Church standardized its liturgy in Latin because it was already the international language (in the West). The Church did not make it the international language.

@@ExVeritateLibertasNope, the Roman Catholic Church by adopting it as their official language - ecclesiastical Latin - their missions around the world, their schools around the world, their utilization in its liturgy around the world, etc. spread Latin to many of its influence around the world.

It's called selective and cherry picking history. He probably is not a fan of the Catholic Church.

According to Giovannino Guareschi latin Is a precise, essential language. It Will be abandoned not because It Is inadequate to the news demands of progress, but because the new men Will no longer be adeguate to It. Just remove latin from the english language and see what remains of the english language

As a linguist, I believe this professor should write his worthy statements. However his speech in English is less than acceptable. Such strong German accent obscures his message. Prussian prepotency!
