I have to really think you a lot I am a single mom with three kids and everyone was telling me to get rid of my van I watch this video and it sounded exactly like what was wrong with my car got a water pump got it fixed for less than $70 thank you so so much
Thank you great video you saved me a lot of money. Changed my water pump in my 2005 Caravan today. The plastic blades in the water pump were broken off like you said. Thanks again

Great job on the presentation! Valuable information. After three diagnostics, it came back to no circulation. Exactly what I thought from the beginning, water pump.
Thanks bro, got identical problems, just checked my thermostat is opening at 95c, so all good there, water pump change tomorrow, if the weather holds out for me, nice vid by the way. Big yu op! 👍
... Thank you for your post... It was in fact the water pump.. When I pulled it out the impeller had began spinning on the shaft... Metal shaft and plastic impeller? ... Since when did they start making water pumps out of Tupperware? I was dreading pulling the Heads, you saved me a major pain in the ass..... Thank You again....
I'm having the exact same symptoms on my 2003 dodge caravan. I personally changed the thermostat and was about to flush the heater core. You saved me a lot of time. Let me change the water pump and see if that fixes it. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks Paul, I believe I am having this problem. The exact same problem. My plan now is go to a trust worthy mechanic to help replace the water pump. I have already flushed the radiator, replaced thermostat & radiator cap, and still no heat....It is making a strange noise too,. It seems to be internal like a head gasket. The noise seems to get louder especially when I put her on drive position and turn on the airconditioner. I thank you for your insight
I remember one of the first signs of a head gasket problem was rad fluid leaking out. That's how it was on an old car I had, you just solved my no heat problem, thanks
Thanks for the really informative video. Many years ago, I had the same thing happen on a car. The water pump wasn't leaking, but the blades inside had come loose from the shaft inside the pump. The mechanic saw that there was no circulation looking under the radiator cap just as you pointed out. Hope that you have a blessed Christmas and happy New Year.
A note to those who have a failed water pump, how it can happen and not leak from the weep hole. 1) Too much water during freezing weather... The car starts and shears the impeller from the shaft because the impeller is sitting in a block of ice. 2) Impeller cannot withstand high pump pressure. Everything is good in the cooling system but you had a moment where your engine hit excessive rpm (passing someone or trying to race, down shifting too soon) At some point, the coolant cannot move as fast as the pump is trying to move it, and the impeller shears from the shaft, or the blades break off. This can happen on older vehicles when the acidity of the water mixed with the antifreeze was too high. Always try to use distilled water, never tap water or well water. Big name antifreeze companies usually monitor the PH levels of their product to prevent this, but I cannot say for certain that the inexpensive brands do. This is also why there are different antifreeze formulas for some different types of vehicles. The metals and other compounds that coolant may make contact with in the cooling system might not react well if a standard coolant is used. The water pump is the most prone to failure as it is almost always heated and in a high friction situation. If you ever need to change a water pump that is difficult to access, like on most Subaru engines, because a timing belt needs removed, inquire about replacing parts that are removed or readily accessed to change the water pump. Often they will be at or near the end of their recommended service life and changing them while they are in there working on the pump can save you the cost of paying labor twice. Hope this helps. Thanks for your video... Thumbs up 👍
Omg thanks so much mine is a 2005 grand Dodge caravan The same thing Im Going thru, I changed the radiator, thermostat, hose, no leaks nor does it sound as it's overheating just showing as it's getting hot, So water pump change it is and I pray that it solves my issue!
Hi thanks!! Having same issue with my dodge caravan no bleeding or weeping off of the water pump but having all sorts of problems that you have described and have changed the thermostat ---Thanks a bunch for doing such a thorough job and great info presentation
Thanks for sharing John, filling the system to maximum and letting it sit while looking and listening after the car at tempature is often the first thing I do I when I think I have coolant issue. I love youtube because not every presents itself in the same manner, so I keep watching and learn more and more on the way to my issue.... peace
I'm having an identical sounding problem with my 2005 Chrysler T&C. It happened suddenly one day, when the temp shot up past the H and the red light came on, I immediately turned the heater on high and got some heat for a few seconds and then no hot air. I pulled over and checked under the car expecting to see antifreeze dripping out, but no leaking. The overflow tank was about 1/2 gallon higher than normal. I suspected a thermostat and replaced it. I was surprised that on the test drive I was not getting hot air, and then wham the temp gauge started shooting up again. I'll try the water pump and update the post later.
I might have a similar problem with my Cobalt. I was talking to someone at work who knows cars and he said it could be the water pump failing and not circulating fluid properly all the time. With my heat on my car will start to slowly overheat but as soon as I turn the fan off temps start to go nominal again. I can run my ac and idle all day and tempd stay nominal but that one click to even setting 1 on high heat and temps start to climb. System has been purged and had it at a mechanic as well but he missed the heater problem apparently.
I just went and picked up a thermostat to see if that's the culprit, but it's only not getting warm inside the cabin when I'm at idle, when I'm driving the cabin gets heat. This has me thinking it's probably not the thermostat, but I'm going to replace it anyway to make sure. Guy at the auto parts place had me thinking heater core, but I tend to think you may be right with the water pump. Thanks for the video.
I'm embarrassed to say my issue was simply a matter of fluids. I had paid someone to "top the fluids" within the last several weeks but I never double checked. My radiator was half empty. Antifreeze fixed the issue. It's very embarrassing to admit, though. hahaha
Dodge Caravans have cheap water pumps! I have had Caravans since 1985 and my current one is a 2001 like yours! I have never got a replacement water pump to go more than about 3 years! I have owned this Caravan for 3 years and have done the water pump already! My issues were just leaks not impeller problems. James
Paul Posey hey Paul how you been ? yeah it was one of the ground wire. However the whole pod module was the problem. It's one thing after another. now the transmission sounds like is going! !!
Thanks for the help Paul! I am having the exact same symtoms. You Tube is great and so are you! One question, I have yet to look into it, is the water pump external or internal?
Thankyou! I have a 2001 Caravan also! These rebuilt water pumps will last 2-3 years! They have plastic impeller which melts from heat! I always carry spare water pump with my van! Had to replace radiator also! Plastic doesn't last! Good vehicles but have to know their weakness! They blow head gaskets when they get older! maybe from overheat? I run a bottle of steel seal with green anti-freeze as preventive on blown head gasket! The 4 cylinder engine has head gasket leak on the oil side not water side of head gasket! Newer Caravans have more problems than the older models! Really sad! James
your problem sounds like the electric driye motor on diverter door is not working look on driverside of center console on heater box upper one controls the different positions of flow
just had a freeze plug blowout two days after the eastcoast blizzard, Thought it was the water pump swapped that out n changed the serpentine belt while i was at it. No dice"then after it appeared like the pump had a hole in it Ill be damned " I looked up over the frame and saw a medium leak from the freeze plug. Longstory went to work after putting water in it to hold til I could replace the plug and it overheated lost compression, so I towed it back home. Ready to scrap it asap. Dont wait til its too late. peace
+john alexander I remember learning as I go in troubleshooting. Now I look at youtube before I try my old guess work. Freeze plugs tend to pop out in the dam-est places, but I am more leary when I look in the radiator and notice people use water not radiator fluid....
+Paul Posey year too add salt to my wound after changing out the plugs with the rubber expansions I got at 3.18 a pop, I let it down from the ramps I had under it and three fuse box clips on the ignition, horn fuse decide to break on me. But anyhow she's back running now. Ciao
Similar with my 2005 T&C, but in my case the entire impeller came loose from the shaft of the water pump. The plastic impeller fins were undamaged, it just wasn't spinning and pumping water. Search for 2005 Chrysler T&C Water Pump Impeller Loose on Shaft - Overheating, to see the video. th-cam.com/video/g9eWu_bhz1k/w-d-xo.html
If its very slow to overheat, its probably a stuck open thermostat, if it overheats in the first 15 minutes of running, I would guess a closed thermostat. I would also check videos on that model and see if others are having the same issue.

Paul Posey HI paul i have a problem with my 2001 dodge caravan. I was driving and the car started acting up. the wipers went crazy all the fluids came out my radio and lights went. It's not the fusses. Can you direct me to the right location in the car
Hi Angel, some times when thing go crazy as you say, its come be a grounding issue. You have several grounds to the vehicle. When you have an imbalance to the grounds, strange things happens to the devices. I would start there.
The thermostat removed only slow down the function of the engine, the engine does its best work around 180 degrees, that's when the thermostat opens and begins the exchange. Without the thermostat, the tempature slowly goes up, and the only cooling is coming from the fan and the vehicle moving. Over time you have another problem besides no heat. The coolant doesn't move without the pump moving it. No fins, no movement.
You say $55 for the water pump. Did you pay the mechanic for his time ? Did the mechanic replaced the water pimp ? Or did you replaced the water pump yourself ? Based on your symptoms, I could tell you, it's not a blown head gasket.
Most blown head gasket, show air in the radiator, or fluid out of the tailpipe, excessive heat. This vehicle showed none of that. This vehicle, rise in temp, but no heat, and no loss in fluid. The pump cost was $55, not the cost to have it put on.
He didn't claim to be a mechanic. He shared that his water pump failed (broken or eroded fins) with no outside evidence of failure and I say "Thank you Paul".

the heater bypasses the thermostat.... so that's a bad diagnostic step.

Did you mean radiator? or radio? let's be clear....
You might have a few issues going on there.
How much cost repair?
The cost of replacing the waterpump, if you can do it yourself.
Question my heat comes out 2 blowers but rest blow cold what is that
You could have a climate control issue, but if you drive and what you think is warm turns cold... you have the same issue.
great video, thanks
Does your plastic above the radiator get really hot?
If the top is really hot, the rest is cooler, you could have a clogged radiator. Which means its only flowing in that area.
@@MrPosey85 I'll check into this. I know it's a 97 voyager body with a dodge sport transplant engine and transmission
Best way to check is to place your hand on the top, sides and bottom, if they vary, you have a problem.
Do all this work on a 2000
Helped big time thank you!! had the same problem in my 2003 grand caravan about 2 days ago
... suck back up to keep the radiator full ... .
The whole purpose of the external coolant tank is to keep the radiator full at all times.
