My hero, Jack Paar. So open and honest, he made a career out of wearing his heart on his sleeve. And... he invented the talk show. When Steve Allen hosted The Tonight Show, it was musical-variety and comedy. Paar came up with the idea of casual interviews, and the rest is history.
I love watching David Letterman talk shop with other talk show hosts! Actually seeing how he relates to each guest in these compilation videos, I feel like I'm getting to know David himself for the first time watching these!
These appearances in the '80s were my first exposure to Mr Paar, whom my mom really liked. And I was completely charmed, and still am. Wonderful compilation!
i've watched several of Jack Paar's interviews.. and i love and respect how he always didnt want to talk/comment about those who already passed/dead. U gotta respect that.
Haha he's so awesome. I wish there was a good collection of his stuff online. He had a hilarious intro on his appearance on Carson in 86 where he comes on to applause and says 'You have no idea how humble that makes a great star like me feel'. Such quick wit.
My Mother never really got over Jack Paar. I was too young to see his "Tonight Show" but Mom was so in love with Jack, she told me lots about him. Though she watched Johnny, as we all did, She was a faithful Paar partisan. And she liked Johnny, but she adored Jack.
This was a great, funny, touching watch, most of it new to me. I always loved Hal Gurnee's link to the old days on Late Night, it's nice to see Jack Paar acknowledge it.
Not that you mention it, Paar was very much a more prickly and neurotic Jack Lemmon. Their face, vocal inflection, body proportions, and tone of voice were quite similar, though it must be said that Lemmon was nowhere near the nervous, insecure wreak that Paar famously was. I wonder if Paar ever had Lemmon on his "Tonight Show"?
Love watching Jack Paar. Was a master on any show he appeared. When Dick Calvert wrote for Paar, he asked Jack what was his secret was. He said to Dick never ask questions but have a “conversation “ .
U can see how Jack Paar really loved and respect Dave. I think the same goes for Johnny Carson too. He loved Dave. And i love Jack Paar's cracked voice. lol.

I really enjoyed watching Dave's confidence grow as the years passed until he could totally hold his own with Jack. That last appearance is priceless.
At 15:20, Jack asks how much time they have. Dave says 3 minutes. Jack launches into a perfect story which lasts exactly 2:48. Masterful!
They have a clock next to the cameras that shows how much time he has left.
@@zelmoziggy Every broadcaster does. Jack was a master. Telling an engaging story while watching the clock and keeping time is a hard earned talent.
How could you not adore Jack Parr? He's so lovable.
Don’s edits are superb… and the variety of rugs on these old hosts is astounding.

lol yeah right. Did you not hear his comments on Judy Garland when she passed?
Nice! This is an aspect of the Letterman oeuvre I haven’t explored.
Don you are one hell of a connoisseur / sommelier of rare Letterman footage.
That's a lot of French for an English sentence.

Don, keeper of the flame, I salute you

Thanks Don!
Jack Paar was the best talk show host ever as you even believed all his bits to camera before he interviewed his guests.
Jack was a number 1 class act .........missed
Close your eyes, and visualize Jack Lemmon. I was looking away from the screen and I would have sworn...to me, stunningly identical.
now that you mention it, I can hear it

Geez, old Desi Arnaz. There's a goldmine of stories. Dave's hair is huge!

Just starting the video...hoping to see the Jim Henson closet.
Jack Parr was so good. It's hard to pin point why he was so good.
What an unpredictable fascinating person Paar truly was.
You can see where johnny got his mannerisms
Love watching Jack Paar. Was a master on any show he appeared. When Dick

I was too little to remember Jack Parr but he seems like a fun host. I got my laughs with Johnny Carson & then Dave growing up.
U can see how Jack Paar really loved and respect Dave.
I think the same goes for Johnny Carson too. He loved Dave.
And i love Jack Paar's cracked voice. lol.
Touching ending, Don.
A living legend
I wonder if Jack was ever asked to guest host for Letterman, Carson, or Merv?
I wonder why Dave felt the need to rein him in on the second appearance. Seems like he should have just let him do his thing.
What an odd, sweet man.
Where have all our great storytellers Gone…
I miss those Late Night frozen dinners.
36:14--Arthur Godfrey? i think Steve Allen was the 1st host of The Tonight Show.
Google and Wikipedia are useful tools.
What’s the song at 13:31?
Who was the first celebrity surprise walk on? Was it Bob Hope?
Robin Williams, when Norman Lear was the guest. March 18, 1982 (#76).
you know your stuff mr. Giller , respect
boy Paar was an odd duck wasn't he?
Jack Parr was kind of an awkward guy who really hated irrelevance.
Correction to below. “Dick Cavett”
