@shiptj01 That's not how upskilling works when a company pays for it. You're thinking of attending a for-profit college. Upskilling when a company pays for it is a modern buzzword for employee training or tuition reimbursement. It's not even a new concept. Companies used to do this in the 1950s when they promoted from within.

Just as much as you don't see any elevator operator anymore... That's literally how technology works. It will always keep happening. Upskilling and shifting jobs is how we humans remain irreplaceable. That's literally our advantage. We're not machines to do exactly the same job in our lifetime.

The issue being these people finding new positions within a company are few and far in between. When you have a warehouse full of workers, only a small percentage will have the ambition to seek these newer positions. The biggest things these companies are looking at financially are work injuries, paid vacations/time-off/sick pay, retirement contributions, health insurance, union strikes, and lawsuits, to name a few. None of which a robot will ever need aside from the occasional breakdown. And if it can't be repaired, it will just be replaced with no complaints from the robot......
That sounds more like the truth and it's plausible. The minority are upgrading their skills not the majority.
And too often, if you want one of those better paying jobs, you have to relocate.

It's not even about ambition. Many factors can be in play, and many may be out of the person's control. If you have 100 ambitious people, and only 1 spot, you can't blame the 99 for not getting that spot.

@edenassos If you think it you can manifest it. I was already thinking of an AI ran company in early 2010s. In high school thinking of devices to detect danger and help warn the driver or stop the car. I was young and didn't know that someone somewhere would still manifest that idea that me and a few classmates came up with in the early 2000s. Jobs have always been replaced and either you know this or want things to stay as-is.

So, she "pivoted" from Walmart to driving, which meant effectively starting all over again. Then, when the trucks drive themselves in 5-10 years, she'll have to "pivot" again, and start from zero again. This is not "upskilling", this is getting fired and finding a new job, for every "Jackie" out there, there were 30 "others" that are out of luck.
Guess what? That new tech is already here. About two years ago I was watching 60 minutes cover a piece about this. Amazon has already been using this tech.

She can still become an engineer to fix those automated trucks. The human elements will be needed in these areas as our minds are building out these ideas, just like how we've been doing all along. Change is always inevitable with humans. Some of us don't want changes and that's your right.

@@MrWaterbugdesignstarting salary around ny state is 34/hr for CDL-A drivers. Owner operators easily make 200k+ gross. I found a job fresh out of a CDL-A course, with xpo, just got my license, earning 36/hr plus benefits out of Bridgeport ct, home daily around 7pm, only five days per week.

Truck drivers like that always made good money, because of the risks involved in that job.

I used to work at a factory. I was netting $500/week. Then, one day I looked up & a robotic set of arms was a yard away from me, packing the boxes ten times faster than I.

I was thinking the same thing. Truckers take on all the cost of the truck. Some after expenses are walking away with 20k at the end of the year.

Blue collar jobs can be a hard adjustment from an office job. I learned this the hard way especially at my age. I became an automotive technician and make more then double then my previous stagnant office job

ALWAYS BE LEARNING. There will always be a need for some human workers somewhere but there's no guarantee there will be enough jobs out there once automation takes over all of these types of jobs. So edge out the competition by ensuring you have employable skills.
Robots will drive those trucks and robots will help the other robots complete their task. SCARY!
And, nobody will be working.

I seriously doubt these jobs are going away anytime soon. Most companies don't want to put forth the investment into their own employees, let alone automated equipment. Plus, any repairs will have to be done by a technician from the manufacturer, depending on when they'd be available next. You really think many of these retailers are willing to face the downtime of these expensive toys? I think not.
👀 If these folks think tech can’t or won’t do those “upskilling” jobs in the next 5-10yrs, then they are highly delusional or very ignorant about tech in general. I didn’t see a single activity or job in this video that would suggest otherwise.
What these companies need to be doing is offering training courses. Make people sign a contract or whatever it takes, but if they need capable employees they should offer to pay for their training under a contract or something.
I’m one of the 1700 that went through Amazon’s Mechatronics & Robotics Apprenticeship program from back in 2021 and wrapped it up in late 2022. Currently working in control systems for JLL, one of Amazon’s third party partners overseeing Reliability & Maintenance Engineering in north Florida Amazon fulfillment centers. Best decision I made in my life..

These are warehouse type positions, not banks. You won't find your average woman working a warehouse position. As well many banks are becoming automated. Back when I was younger, you could walk into any bank and you would see 5-10 tellers ready to assist, not today. My bank has 2 teller windows and 3 full sized ATM machines inside not to mention the 2 atms outside. There's another BofA branch by my friends house that has no teller windows. It has 4 cubicles plus managers office and a wall full of atms.......

No salaries, no OT pay, no sick days, no health insurance, no unemployment insurance to payout, no injuries, no etc etc. Everything that applies to being an "employee" are evaporated. I work at a warehouse. When there’s not enough of work to go around, they cut people’s hours. This will only promote for dedicated people who are willing to stay in the company for years, to reduce employees and more machínery
The biggest problem is Greed. The corporations don't have any problem using AI. I've noticed too many people are missing the big picture--sure, maybe YOUR job might not be done by AI (etc), but that doesn't mean that millions of other people's jobs won't be taken by AI. And you know who that effects? EVERYBODY!! This isn't going to happen overnight, but we're definitely heading there.

330M US citizens, 1k/month = $4 TRILLION/Year. The ENTIRE federal tax system collects $5T/year. So yeah, no, UBI only works if you don't know how math works. And remember, that's ONLY $1k/month/person. Still not even remotely enough to live off of, even in the cheapest places in the US. Please stop with this nonsense.
UBI will be the end of the USD dollar. Foreign investors will be leaving the US bond market in droves. As will domestic.
Foreign countries that neither have deployed automation will not transact in a currency that rewards Americans to sit on the butts at their expense.
UBI will just be another trap to regulate how much everyone is worth. And it won't be much.

Better make the trucks fully autonomous as the driverless taxis in San Fransisco and make them run through a special lane with an electrical power source on top of it as the one in Lübeck, Germany. It's cheaper, faster, safer and it will lower the prices since it will solve supply chain problems

Don't be deceived. The ratio is close to 100 to 1, meaning for every 100 layoffs 1 new job gets created that requires a brand new skill.

The moment robots learn how to load trucks sequentially from a belt line for delivery companies ie fed ex/ups its a wrap. Package handlers amount to 70% of their work force. Would cost the company billions to set that kind of operation at every wear-house.
And When you ask your sup or hr they will tell you there aren't any spots in the program.

How do I appy for the driver for walmart?? Anyone??? I went to get my cdl on my own and have no restrictions on my cdl.. I always try to apply but get a 3rd party site all the time????
It seems that it is for current employees only. I met with a walmart store HR manager in person who didn't seem to know anything about it. She introduced me to one of the workers who had just gone through the program but didn't make the cut. Apparently, you have to be a full time employee for at least one year to become eligible to apply. Go to your local Wal-Mart and try looking into it yourself.
Also, for truck driving jobs in general, look into company training programs. Some companies such as Old Dominion have 6-8 week training programs (for OTR and home every night or local positions) that aren't always advertised. Call companies and ask if they have such a program. It can also benefit you since you most likely don't have experience outside of schooling.
Do you have any endorsements? As you know, that is what will boost your pay and give you access to more opportunities. HazMats, oil/gas are the top ones. If you go this route, make sure your driving skills are top notch, safety first!
Walmart doesn't care about you and will replace you as soon as they possibly can (as demonstrated in the video), apply literally anywhere else, maybe even consider going private.

The ability to pivot on the job is absolute gold. Having confidence to learn and broaden your comprehension is a valuable skill. Talk to hr and your supervisor often. Being the solution will always get you paid .
At a certain point automation will cause massive unemployment. Not saying its gonna happen now, but in 15 20 yrs we'll start to see it

if everyone upskilled to machine operators only a few would get a job. essentially its like the floor manager would be the only human on the floor. A warehouse would only need a fraction of the human workforce. the working class of america would be forced to move to developing countries to find work and lower cost of living. AI/Robotics should be used for healthcare and government application only.
Great PR. We all know there's going to be jobs watching over the bots, but it still doesn't cover the many jobs it takes away.

It's already happening. I remember 60 minutes covering a story about two years ago where the auto-driven trucks were preforming on the road. Amazon already has been using this tech for their trucks.

@@batman-cu1ep - Depends on the field you choose. Most employers say they "prefer" a four year degree. Much hype was made about "Smashing the Paper Ceiling" but you still see plenty of office job postings where they prefer a four year degree. Not all, but a lot do.

Unlike back then, when technological breakthroughs legitimately created more jobs, today's breakthroughs don't create enough jobs to replace the ones that disappear. With that said, nobody wants to lift boxes all day.
