Joe Manganiello (Dungeons & Dragons NERD, Magic Mike) on TYSO -

  • Just when you thought Rick had interviewed all the STRONG MEN of Hollywood... Joe Manganiello drops in to the TYSO studio.
    The Magic Mike star comes brandishing his rescue chihuahua, Bubbles, and gets acquainted with Rick and the Shoe’s Off podcast universe.
    The two bond over a deep childhood love of Arnold Schwarzenegger and superheroes. They discuss Joe’s game of choice, Dungeons & Dragons, and what it was like for both of them at school to have such fringe “nerd” interests (go check out Ricks episode with Magic The Gathering expert The Professor).
    They discuss Joe’s successful high school athletic career and Joe speaks on “Type Casting” which is why he’ll never play Stephen Hawking. They debate relationship stereotypes and Rick tells why he doesn’t want to feel obligated to kiss on a first date or open the car door for his love interests. Meanwhile, Joe discusses his romantic instincts and how he prepared for his last first kiss.
    They dive into a very considerate conversation that gets Rick a little emotional and Joe champions our hosts eccentricities.

I've been in this phase of self-correcting myself, trying to show humility, trying to be less intense, but feeling like I'm losing myself. This really does give me hope I can strike a better balance. Joe: “Obi Wan and Qui Gonn should’ve been one character”
    After really thinking about it, he’s right. In the film, Obi Wan being an apprentice really served nothing to the story. He could’ve been a master already and nix Qui Gonn and nothing would change dwindling down to one Jedi versus two.

    • @hellnoid90
      @hellnoid90 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Disagree especially when Qui Gon is the reason Obi Wan has patience with Anakin despite disobeying him. That part serves as a deeper connection and paves the way into Master and Apprentice which is a common theme throughout star wars.

    • @TBHJR
      @TBHJR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hellnoid90 Needing a secondary character to explain another character's trait seems superfluous. It could've just been established Kenobi patience by any other means. Majority of what makes up TPM doesn't carry over into the series, as far as major plot points and most characters go.

      the "i was diagnosed with adult autism" drop moment was definitely a turning point. I think Joe had a hunch but that confirmed it and the conversation became more akin to a real conversation off-camera where you interrupt because youre engaged with the topic. As they discussed, this podcast isnt the same interview style situation joe is tired of doing, so he was willing to go along with it till he clicked in to Ricks vibes. I dont think there was frustration so much as just him trying to make sense of Ricks rambling when he would take over the conversational baton.

    The difference between opening the car door and paying for a meal is that someone *needs* to pay for the meal, so it might as well be me. Nobody needs to open someone else's door in the first place, so it's just not a necessary thing to do (and it's something that the vast majority of people simply don't do anymore). Joe obviously also has a more traditional mentality, which Rick obviously doesn't agree with, and opening the door for someone is part of that mentality.
    Also, it's clear that Rick will still do certain things like pay for a meal, and I'm sure he gave his girlfriend gifts and stuff, and someone like Joe could point to that as hypocritical (and it basically is), so I think it really just boils down to what *level* of chivalrous you want to be, and Rick's level is obviously just not as high as Joe's. There are certain "traditions" like buying gifts that Rick (and most of us) will still do, and there are other "higher-level" things that aren't common anymore and represent a more old-fashioned (and frankly, sexist) mentality. Obviously it sounds like Joe is ok with that and values his masculinity in a confident way, while Rick feels differently about it.

    Loved this one, and I have to admit I definitely characterized Joe wrongly. He is an interesting and smart dude and I just added some music to my Spotify list because of him.

      How did you characterize him?
      He’s an absolute sweetheart.
      Did you get bullied by people who looked like Joe?
      If you did, I’m so sorry to hear that.

      @@RobGordonJC I didn't know much about him and just assumed he wasn't much more than a meathead. He's got great depth of character I hadn't recognized. No I wasn't bullied by someone that looks like him, I'm just saying I appreciate there is more to him. I wasn't bullied by anyone, I'm a big guy. Quite the leap you took there.

    That hard transition from the room to the dunk, to the ad at the start was manic and made me giggle. Commenting for engagement analytics.

    Yea. I Stan Rick. No duh! But I never really cared about Joe. Now I’m open to getting into some of his stuff. Very interested in stuff he has creative control over. 👍
