He has one of the most particular voice, that is the most difficult thing to reproduce. I mean he has this voice very very thiny, like a "mezza-voce" if we can define in this term. If you don't born with that voice you can't even try to do something similiar to him. For example i have a bass/baritone voice and my head voice is preatty big and it's impossible to have his voice at all. Maybe for a tenor is better but it's something that has to do just with vocal chords. I think very very few people in earth can try to reproduce exactly his voice but in my opinion you have to born with those vocal chords and other things ..
I’ve always felt like Thom’s singing sounds like a kind of wail when he hits those long high notes. Not many people could make that work but he absolutely kills it.
QWERTY Yes! I (strangely) love that tonal quality of his voice in those high notes. It really captures the emotional impact of many of their songs. And as you said it works perfectly.
Toms voice it sounds to me like a mix between a ghost and an angel. Dont you think that? It takes you to places and creates armopheries. I get lost when i listen this band. Love this rendition to radiohead and tom yorke. Now i ask you for a video of bjorks voicee pleasee
Jigsaw Falling Into Place is a prime song to vocally analyze. It has a pretty wide range, even for Thom, so much that they've stopped playing the song live, because it's to hard for Thom.
It would be so cool to hear you react to older singers from back in the day like David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, etc. Voices weren’t as super polished as they are now but I found them much more soulful at times.
So what do we have to do to get Bon Appetit to pick Sam as a guest for a Back to Back Chef episode because it would be one of the greatest crossovers of all time
I find myself getting more and more fluent in understanding this singing language.....viscerally understand the “all pitches have their own register” better now than the first time I heard you describe this concept months ago.
Sam is the kind hero we beginners need! Love how you described what registration means to you, sensation vs just terminology. I’ll practice thinking of it like that!
@@angrylittledumpling Kid A and in Rainbows are the masterpieces for me and Hail to the thief is my personal favorite. But ok computer was groundbreaking for them and the music world..
Thom's full-ish voice, the eternal mystery! I've been fixating lately once again on his way of singing, so this video helped a lot. Love all your videos actually, and I just realised that I was unconsciously "creating the map" for the past year of all different registrations and how they "feel" in my body and mind!Always grateful for your suggestions and explanations! 🎼
I fully agree with Sam’s comment: Thom’s a wizzard… I love his voice and attitude even when I know nothing about music grammar but I love the feeling I get when it's happening, and that is magic. I can’t argue about the way you have to spell: a lot a lot a bit, cause I’m not an english speaker but it was funny.
happily surprised to (finally) see Radiohead on this excellent YT channel. What a unique band , with many brilliant songs, so hauting and powerful that you never think about the technique when listenning to it. You just gest lost.
Radiohead and Tom Yorke have a unique sound, I am always happier when Ive heard them. I am always happier after a Sam Johnson video too. Your analysis are always respectful, honest and truly educational.
I read or heard somewhere that in the Pablo Honey days Thom kept blowing up his voice on stage during the tour. When he met Bjork he realized he needed voice training.
I love how real you are. You give what your fans want, but also just put out great content, even if it wasn't asked for in the comments. Keep it up man
Thank you for reviewing the methods and techniques Thom Yorke utilizes, I’ve been loving your channel and enjoy the range of styles you overview. Of course everyone requests particular artists from you to do a video on, but I would just like to offer Damian Rice as an artist for you personally to take a look at. He’s a less.... popular I suppose artist but his style is extremely unique and I would love for you to hear it. Thanks for all the work and knowledge!
Seen them once when I was a teen, my first freaking concert ever and I regret that I haven't seen them again...absolutely one of my favorite bands ever
would love to hear you react to some Incubus, maybe from the Look Alive tour - their singer's voice is really unusual and so good on those shows specifically
I don't know much about singing, but I get the feeling that if you wrote a book on textbook singing, Thom might not be someone you'd want to include. That being said, he has a certain way about him, a way of really injecting emotion that a lot of people connect with, including myself.
I would love to hear you break down Anthony Green's voice in like a Circa Survive or Saosin song where he switches between clean melodic and screams. Or like, Hobo Johnson lol
Awesome, I love your videos reacting to so many different artists, I know you already did Harry Styles but I would love to hear your reaction on the 'Falling' performance as well as the Billie Eilish - 'No Time To Die' Performance both at the Brit Awards.
Could his head shaking also have another practical use. It almost sounds like it is giving him a slight warble sound from the minor doppler effect on the mic.
I've always felt like it was for keeping time. This sort of thing is the kind of thing people point to when they say things like "Videotape is syncopated".
This version (from Later with Jools Holland) is my favorite version of Weird Fishes. I rewatch it regularly, and share it with people when I want to tell them about my favorite song (and band) in the world.
Fell in love with Radiohead when my husband and I got to see them live after In Rainbows came out. It was for my husbands birthday because he is a huge fan of theirs and Thom. Got super excited when I saw this video posted.
My vocal config for falsetto and light connected voice on the same note feels quite different. e.g., an F# in falsetto tends to feel very back, and "loose", and open. But to add in a bit of connection, I need to make what feels like alot of alot of reconfiguration in my voice. e.g., close down, shift forward, engage some muscles to close the chords, etc. Am I perhaps letting the falsetto note become too far away (configuration wise) than the connected note? Would I be better to let the falsetto note be very close to the connected note, e.g., same config, but let go of the chord closure? I can do that, it just sounds less deep and hooty.
Hello there! Missing your videos (but from artists I like hehe). Love how you need to explain so many details about the complexity of a voice so identifiable. If you do another Radiohead video, could it be Paranoid android, All I need, High and dry, Karma police, Street spirit (fade out), Black star, How to desappear completely, Idioteque, Let down? (I could literally love a video on each one 😅) Your choice for this video is lovely.

Thom yorke has one of the best voices to me. i love radiohead
It is like a violin 🎻🎶
My favorite band. His singing style is quite hard to reproduce he adds lots of effects but it still sounds so natural, kind of genius in my book

Listening to you talk about a singer's voice and style is almost as helpful as a lesson. I just get so much out of this.
Right?? Almost makes me feel 1% less guilty about watching youtube instead of studying!
Ohhh nice some Radiohead! Weird Fishes always gives me chills when I listen to it.
I’ve always felt like Thom’s singing sounds like a kind of wail when he hits those long high notes. Not many people could make that work but he absolutely kills it.

My wife hates it. I think his voice is an instrument.

And the fact we don’t know what a fucking angel or a ghost sounds like is no help
Yes

Some Radiohead songs seemed impossible when I started this singing journey, thanks for this.
It would be so cool to hear you react to older singers from back in the day like David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, etc. Voices weren’t as super polished as they are now but I found them much more soulful at times.
Well you’ve now restarted my Radiohead obsession.
We should start a support group😬
So what do we have to do to get Bon Appetit to pick Sam as a guest for a Back to Back Chef episode because it would be one of the greatest crossovers of all time
I'd die
Listen to Wolf at the Door for a very unique side of Thom’s voice.
That's an awesome song!!
I agree! It sounds much closer to his speaking voice, which would normally be someone’s comfortable singing range
@@IHeartTurnips14
You can tell in a lot of his solo music that he naturally has a strong low range yeah
14:15 Just cause you FEEEEEEEEL IIIT doesn't mean it's there.
His softer tone draws a listener in, imagine if this started off belting? Very different feel
Yorke's restraint or lack of is artistry
I love how even Sam can't exactly classify Thom's voice. It's other worldly!
Please react to any of their songs from the performances they did of their album “In Rainbows” from The Basement
Specifically ‘Nude’ or ‘Videotape’
Nude.... oh man, what a performance that is.
