Nice to ESXI 6.7 making it's way on the channel! IIRC the Dell version just includes tweaks and drivers for whatever server it was made for (which is a nice time saver). The nice thing about ESXI is it runs the actual hypervisor OS from memory so the USB is essentially just the boot medium (you probably knew that). Also it looks like you have the enterprise daughter card for your iDRAC 6 so you could stick an SD card with all your ISOs on it in the iDRAC on the back so you don't have to mess with USB sticks in the future. Just use the iDRAC web portal to mount the images when you want to install an OS. Hope you get over the illness, seems like everyone is getting sick lately...

hi sir, first of all thanks for your video, it was enjoyable to watch i just wanna ask, i have dell R810 and it has 4 x Intel Xeon L7555 and 128 GB of ram is it possible to run ESXi 6.7?
Hello i have a newbie Question. the esxi doesn't that require a paid license to run or is it free? The reason why I'm asking is i went to there site and the cost is nuts.
@Joe, in the H200 controller the -IR @ post means its the IR firmware, if you dont create raid volumes like you said it'd be totally fine, if you had say 2x2YB you dont care about, you could create a RAID0 for ESXi VM storage and the rest of the drives would act like normal for windows, SMART/etc if it had -IT it'd be the IT firmware tho happy its more or less an LSI rebrand card, you could even slap in a non Dell HBA/RAID card if it was LSI, try that on HP servers and they cry like little girls like hardware not supported and disables the PCIe slot at least on my HP DL385 Gen7 that eats 330 watts under full load, may toss ESXi on it and use NFSv4 for VM storage because setting up iSCSI is just meh as it works just as well, anyhow good video, was going to suggest using vmware workstation to connect to it instead of the client i saw the icon on your desktop, can create VMs on desktop, then "upload" to ESXi, might be slow even on 1g, but there you go for something to try if you haven't already and good luck
I did not know that about the HP servers, to be honest I do not care for HP, I am a Dell guy, that being said, OMG is VMWare a pig when it comes to VCenter, I was not aware how resource hungry it truly was until I got it loaded for myself, I do like workstation, and it does about 90-95% of what I need vmware to do. OK now here's the real challenge - did you find an OpenManager Server Administrator VIB that works with setup? (ESXi 6.7 on Dell R710). This would be handy. Cheers.
Unkyjoe.... I really enjoy your videos. I recently acquired a well-equipped Dell R710 server for my home-lab. Tried ESXi 6.7 (from internal USB stick) but it did not recognize any raid storage. Is that worthwhile or maybe too-costly? CPU: Xeon X5670 x 2 Raid Controller: PERC7
You sure that is not a perc6 controller? I ask because they were standard issue on those units, a perc6 works with 6.7, as long as you have the virtual drive setup properly on the controller. P.S. Google is your friend for some of these issues. Best of luck, and thanks for watching :)
Thanks for video. its really great video. I had one question. Is it safe to install Vmware Vsphere on usb? in case of failure how to restore the flash drive?
No, flash memory is much too faulty to run enterprise software on. IF you're doing it for home lab purposes it may be ok, but even then don't risk having to start from scratch. There's dell R710s out there for $200 with everything you need.
That is very nice of you for putting up all these videos for people like me. I have a Dell R710 with CPU Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz and having issues installing the ESXi 6.7. Getting error "unsupported CPU ". I have updated the firmware and the Life Cycle with no avail. Is there a way to force the VMware into thinking that it has a supported CPU? I am using this in my lab and wouldn't like to purchase a new server. Your advice will be very much appreciated.
You will need to update the CPU's in that unit to the Xeon 5600 series as the 5500 are no longer supported, or you could run Windows on them. A couple of cpu's should cost you around $25-50 depending on the ones you get. Check with Art Of Server here on TH-cam or Ebay and he should be able to hook you up. Thanks for watching :)

Great information, thanks for watching :)
Great info. Any updates to this ? Do you have one for the r210-II ?
Is it safe to use keys sold on eBay?
no, its tied to someones account, you can however signup and get the free ESXi its mostly unlocked for what a home lab would need for a 1 server setup, paid version would be for vcenter/etc and have a cluster of servers (costly)
I paid the $200 to vmug to make my life easier, however there are ways to find "alternatives" for a lab environment ;) Thanks for watching :)
The license that comes with the free version of ESXi 6.7 worked for me..
@@UnkyjoesPlayhouse unky, can that license be installed on more than 1 homelab server ? I have 2 r710's. One is a backup switched off mostly.
Bring out the gimp (behind you)
Thanks for watching :)
