  • Night-sky tourism is booming, with historic northern lights and buzzed-about comets only amplifying the public’s enthusiasm. But the world’s twilight sights go far beyond once-in-a-lifetime interstellar happenings. In the new National Geographic book, 100 Nights of a Lifetime: The World’s Ultimate Adventures After Dark, which publishes Dec. 3, 2024, author and astrotourism writer Stephanie Vermillion spotlights all sorts of unique nocturnal experiences-think: scouting for glowing rocks on the shores of northern Michigan; night paddling during the Amazon rainforest’s busiest (and noisiest) hours; experiencing New Zealand’s quest to become a DarkSky-certified country, and sleeping on the world’s second-largest ice expanse, the Greenland Ice Sheet.
In this presentation, Stephanie discusses the boom in after-dark tourism, some lesser-known moonlit marvels featured in her book, and how our twilight travels can support local communities and conservation efforts-particularly when it comes to safeguarding the world’s night skies.

20:45 i cant help but fear Noctourism will ruin the night sky in a similar fashion, yet i cannot be so selfish as to pretend I am somehow more privileged to experience natural night than others. I just really hope we can sustain it. Everything turns into an Industry 😢
