- #HOW TO INCREASE THE SPEED IN STENOGRAPHY
Hello Friends, today I am going to talk to you about this very important subject which is - as to how to increase the speed of stenography - It is a general and obvious question and natural as well for those who are aspiring to become stenographer.
When we say stenography, it consists of two things (1) shorthand and (2) typing both and not one - we need to give equal weight to both - no standalone would help - if one is good at shorthand but not in typing, the desired result would not be there similarly if one is good at typing but not at shorthand, it may not be worthwhile. I have seen people under-estimating the importance of typing, which is equally important.
Let’s take first of all what’s the definition of the speed in stenography - the speed in stenography is that at which one is able to transcribe and with less than 5% mistakes. It is not only writing, which is mistaken by many, but transcribing.
I am sharing with you my way of improving stenography, after my decades of experience and this has helped many people in the past
Lets take shorthand first
1) take down the dictation of an unseen passage at a speed u are comfortable 50 60 70 and so on
2) read the passage for 5/10 mins, as the case may be
3) transcribe the passage preferably on computer and note down the time taken
4) check the transcription and make a summary of the mistakes category wise - like omission, additions, substitution, singular/plural, typing errors etc etc
5) note down the difficult words and phrases (in a register) and practise the same.
6) then only re-write (not transcrible) the passage from the recording 3/4 times or till u can write without missing any word or making any mistake.
Now, coming to improvement in typing skill, please take the steps I am going to mention.
- Take any para of 200 or 300 words
- type whatever u can out of it only for 5 minutes without seeing the computer screen and ensure that you do not commit any mistake as well - I repeat without seeing the screen - even if u type 10 or 20 wpm initially don’t worry - it may be slightly painfull or different for you but please bear with it as it will help u in increasing accuracy.
- u need to see the page or passage only from which u type -
- repeat and type the same para and method minimum 3/4 times for 5 minutes each to ensure that there’s no mistake -
- this total exercise may take u around 20-25 minutes -
- repeat this for a fortnight and then review.
I am quite sure, if anyone follows the method suggested by me for shorthand or typing or both only for a fortnight, he will find improvement in accuracy and/or in speed.
I am sharing it as it has helped a lot of people in the past and I have such feedback - I would welcome the feedback of those who give it a try so that it can more people.

Rajni - two short lines underneath an outline indicate an initial capital - these are used wherever we have to write the outline of any noun/proper noun.

I would request, as a suggestion, that you add the English transcription in subtitles to verify each word spoken. I believe this will be helpful to all students, but especially Americans who might not understand all the words. Even I, a person very familiar with the accents of Indian nationals, have some difficulty with several words.

Another suggestion would be to add dictations that are 30 to 80 wpm for beginning stenographers.

Now pls 🙏suggest my steno typist skill test is near and right now I can easily take dictation on 80wpm but when I start taking dictation on 100wpm I have done so many mistakes how can I improve myself in short period
Deepika - better take small steps of increasing speed and not more than 5 wpm at one point of time otherwise the accuracy would suffer and confidence would shake - like increase to 85 wpm and when you are having good accuracy increase to 90 wpm and like that.

Commas are not considered as mistakes by SSC and most of the other places - take care of full stops.

Dear - the reason could be that your accuracy in KC and legal may not be much - secondly it happens that in the beginning some problems are there but the more you do and practice, it will improve.

Sir me 19 month se speed ki class le rha hu hard work bhi bahut krta hu me or ek ladki ne ek sath institute join kiya tha meri seen ki speed 105 h or unseen ki 95-100 but us ladki ki unseen 110+ he sir mere institute receptionist ne kaha aapko 19 months ho gye h aapki speed 120 honi chahiye thi minimum 115 sir kya ye bat sahi he sir me iss wajah se bahut trauma me rehta hu delhi high court ka pa or spa ka bhi skill aane wala h
Dear - there are lot of factors (like academic background, command on the language, commitment, guidance, consistency, etc. etc.) which contribute in the overall improvement of this skill - there is no uniform system for everyone - please look into this accordingly.
How to correct punctuation marks during transcription.
Saurav - good question - just only listen to any dictation, you will find pause after full stop - put full stop simultaneously while writing dictation - other than full stop, no error is counted for commas etc.

Dear Santosh - first of all i thank you for raising this query - it is not clear whether you are pursuing shorthand now along with or not - anyhow typing in any case can be postponed till May and after your written, you can take up - suggest you to ensure that you always utilize your time effectively.

Dear - to my mind there is no need for hyphen as such - still in case you have any specific example, you can share.

Only seen matters can be practiced within 15-20 wpm of the original speed.

Dear Rohit - no worries - suggest you to focus on accuracy and then increase your speed by 5 wpm - and when you are within 5% increase by another 5 wpm - like this gradual increase would have confidence in you and the accuracy would be maintained- Please avoid jump more than 5 wpm in your speed - all the best to you.
sir pls tell me what should i do m getting nervous whenever i attemp skill test due to this i hv disqualified in my supreme court PA skill test.
Dear Raj - the nervousness normally occurs when we think negative- in case you have the competency, please believe yourself and think positively- skill exam is like any transcription of unseen passage which you may be doing - wish you all the best - please watch some motivational videos also.

Good dear - you need to learn typing as well as shorthand as the stenography consists of these two - find out a good tutor/coaching near your place which will facilitate you in understanding and guiding - it takes around 4-6 months to do basic book - be prepared to work hard which is the primary requirement of learning any skill - in case you have more queries, please write to me.

First of all thanks Chhaya for writing to me - I m pleased to know that you are doing a 10-5 job which is very difficult to get these days - it shows you have worked hard and you can do now also - for PR preparations, I have issued 3 videos and the link of one is given th-cam.com/video/z_J3fU_PUMA/w-d-xo.html - the method of preparations is the same like we adopt from junior to senior stenographer - it requires daily transcription and practice of the words and phrases out of the same - suggest you to plan your day so that you get the dictation in the morning - if possible transcribe during the day and do the practice in the evening - wish you good luck.
