  • An update on the lavender Pekin chicks that hatched on Easter Monday 2019. They are 3.5 weeks old.
    #pekins#pekin bantams#poultry
The Pekin is a true bantam, that is, a breed of miniature chicken which has no large fowl counterpart. They are rather round-shaped, and their carriage tilts forward, with the head slightly closer to the ground than their elaborate tail feathers. This 'tilt' is a key characteristic of the Pekin. The bird on the whole, though the tail especially, should be abundantly feathered, and well rounded. The cockerels often have longer feathers that protrude outwards from their feet. The range of Pekin colours is extensive, and the list is continually growing. Colours include black, blue, buff, cuckoo, mottled, barred, Columbian, lavender, partridge, white, birchen, and silver partridge Rarer colours are in great demand, and many breeders spend much time perfecting new lines of colours in their birds. Frizzled Pekins are common.
Pekin Bantams are very docile, and with careful and regular handling they make ideal pets, especially for families with younger children.
The hens are regularly broody and are known to be good sitters and attentive mothers. They are not very productive egg layers.

    ABOUT ME:
    My name is Jackie.
We bought a derelict cottage in 2014 and eventually moved to the Republic of Ireland from the UK in 2016.
We had previously lived in social housing so it was a very exciting time for us.
We gradually renovated the cottage and made it home.
I live here in County Mayo with Helen, two donkeys, four dogs, chickens.
We have 1.2 acres to take care of, can you imagine what that land looked like when nobody had lived in the cottage for 10 years, that's when I decided I wanted to document life here, so then came TH-cam.

Gorgeous chicks. If your sexing is correct you have a good proportion of girls to boys. Keep us posted as to their progress. Regards Mags.

Awe they are sooo cute. We got 2 bantams 2 weeks ago and 1 of them is this gorgeous colour. She is the smaller of the 2, the other one is a different type of bantam and is bigger. But O my goodness the little lavender one is a bully and tries to get all the tiny bits of meat I give them

they are gorgeous, I was always dubious about handling the cockerel, i had a viscous one before ( not a bantam ), this lavender cockerel is placid , so cute !

Gorgeous breed! Do their feathers stay that pastel colour when they're adults? It seems as though they've all got different temperaments as well LOL Thanks for the update (I loved the hatching post too...).

Hi Marie😀, Yes they will stay that colour, Lavender but you can also get many different colours, they are gorgeous, yes definitely different temperaments, who would have thought he would have bitten me after all the love and care I've given them 😂😂. Thanks for watching Marie, I was lucky to catch the hatch at the right time.

They are locked in the housing bit so they are safe, do get foxes but I've put this chick house nearer to the house, the bigger hens are in an enclosure too, they would get them if I free ranged them so I don't 🐣🐤🙂
