  • In this review, we go for a suitably attired day out in Kent in a wonderful 2003 Mazda MX-5 1.8i to see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for in-jokes for fans of a certain long-running spy film franchise, references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal spoof science series Look Around You, terrible continuity, more discussions on indicator stalks, comments on boot release security, the inability to say car names properly, photographs of Diana Rigg and Joanna Lumley for no reason at all, a soliloqy on instruments from a 2002 Mazda 323F, the merits of dual mass flywheels, very slow driving and generally little of any consequence at all... Nothing untoward, then!
    As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

    A great summer car, which takes skill to fully master, lots of info too

    Another terrific review! I have adored every generation of MX5, Mazda have stayed true to the concept of a lightweight simple roadster of modest power which is a pure joy to drive at road legal speeds. And for not a lot of money and a pain free ownership proposition. The problem with modern performance cars is they have to be driven so hard to come alive that to get any excitement is a quick trip to a driving ban and frankly irresponsible and dangerous on public roads. The great thing about the MX5 is you don't need to be driving fast to feel excited and get a real buzz. Wonderful cars.

      Thanks John! I filmed the MG TF for No Budget Reviews with this one in mind, both were the same age and aimed at the same market. The MX-5 is absolutely brilliant, and I really enjoyed driving it. The steering was one of the best power assisted systems I have ever experienced, and they are not particularly expensive to buy or run. I liked both the cars, but this probably edges it slightly for me. The horrific rust issues these can suffer from do put me off, though, MG TFs do not seem to be nearly as bad, but then there are other issues, of course!

    Have been skipping past this NB MX5 so I decided today was the day.
    Very good little roadster, 140 bhp, sweet five speed gearbox, cosy hood and steering feel like a BMW. The only drawback is rust. Definitely one for a barn or a nice dry garage. One of these Smile Inducer Cars.

      Should have been No Budget Reviews, sir, really, but the format did not really exist at the time! You are absolutely right, enough power, good chassis, decent steering feel. The rust is a bit of an issue, though...

    Those heating and ventilation switches look almost identical to those in my dad's old 2002 Ford Ranger, still working my way through your older videos.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hope you are enjoying your journey through the archive, sir! Yes, the old Ford Ranger was heavily based on the old Mazda B-Series pickup trucks, with very few of Ford's own parts, so it is not surprising there are a few in common. I think I have driven a 2007 Ranger, funnily enough.

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting you are welcome to drive my mk1 anytime when things get normal, it is the ‘ dreaded ‘ 1.6 auto, which is a surprisingly good drive, I like it anyway, I live in South Lincolnshire / norfolk border but I could meet somewhere closer

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@badbooks476 , I am not sure that I would particularly dread it, probably just enjoy it! I have cars at some point to cover in both Lincolnshire and Norfolk offered by other channel viewers, so it looks as if a road trip may be in order when we are out of Tier Four.... Do send me an e-mail at the address on the contact section of my channel homepage or shown on screen in most episodes of No Budget Reviews and Sensible Secondhand Reviews and we will see what we can sort out. (Ironically, I can't put the address in this comment, as TH-cam tends to block it when I do...)

    Another great video sir. I have just subscribed to your channel after enjoying several of your videos and perchance found this gem this morning. I have been a happy NB Mk 2.5 2003 Mx-5 owner for 10.5 years and have enjoyed trouble free ownership, the only issue being a faulty window regulator. The Mk 2.5 featured in your video appears to have an aftermarket remote key and is probably why the boot doesn't open remotely from it, as my boot most certainly does open using the remote. I have a Cirrion Silver Nevada with hard top and blue roof, but with no AC. I tend to keep mine with the hard top on. which I attribute the lack of rust in mine to (they can rust from the inside with water trapped in blocked soft top drainage channels, near the wheel arches). My friend has a limited edition Mk2 X Reg Jasper Conran with Wilton Carpets and Mini Disc player, which is quirky.

      Thank you very much indeed for watching, commenting and subscribing! I actually have reviews of an NA Eunos, an NC MX-5 Sport Back and a Fiat 124 Spider Lusso on the channel as well, although the 124 isn't quite a proper MX-5. I well remember this review, as it took ages due to the number of problems we had filming it, but it seems to have come out OK in the end. It was filmed almost four years ago now...

    Mazda were really thoughtful by giving MG Rover the friendly nudge towards the car that they really badly needed to ressurect. The designed it and build it so well that it became a modern classic very quickly.
    Such a smile inducing, feel good car for occupants, driver and everybody that they meet.
    My wife and I actually mark the end of winter with a wide smile each year when we are overtaken by the first top down MX5 on our favourite 11 mile proper driving road.
    Depressed? Drive an MX5. 😃

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Mazda's unveiling of the MX-5 in 1989 was very much a bit of a wake-up call for the Rover Group as it was at the time. The MX-5 Mark II is probably the cheapest these days, and it offers a huge amount of fun for the money, as does an MG TF. Loved the steering, handling, driving position and general aesthetic of this one.

    (Just wondering, which other British sports car did you mean to mention at 0:35?)

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Thanks Stanley! It was supposed to be the MGB and the Lotus Elan. Both are mentioned later in the review (with suitable photographs). This was a difficult one to film and edit, but it worked out OK in the end, thanks to both Mr Franks and Mr Richardson's hard work.

    You can't beat an MX-5! Good video Joseph, you're welcome to do a video with one of my MX-5s if you ever get the chance. My NB has got a fair few modifications as well - you may want to bring you brave pills 😉In regard to MX-5 problems, the only serious issue will be rust, as you mentioned in the video.

Would love to film an NA, thank you ever so much indeed for offering. So many Japanese cars of the late 1990s and early 2000s suffered from poor rust protection, didn't they?

      Thanks very much indeed for watching the video! One like this is probably worth £1000-1500. The owner drives it every day, and this review was filmed in November. We did go through a bit of a vicious rainstorm in it (which you probably saw) and it didn't seem to leak, which is good. Definitely check for rust very carefully! Hope that all helps.

    Oil pressure gauge in an NB is deceiving. It's just an idiot light really and doesn't indicate variances in pressure in an analogue way; just that you have pressure or not. You need to change the sender unit in the engine block. Also the steering wheel does not adjust. I've had my 1.8 VVT Sport for 20 years and wouldn't want anything else for a fun driving, cost of ownership, ease of servicing.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Thank you for watching! This is a pretty old video now, but certainly a lot of the information is still relevant, and they are an awful lot of fun, easy to service and still quite cheap to buy, although one has to watch that rust (this car had several rust repairs on it).
