    Impressive job Art. You are absolutely right about bead board. Now maybe that 4x8 sheet bead board would work and it is inexpensive, easy to clean or paint. Keep up the hard work on that house. So cool you have a friend to listen to your issues.

    @patchurch1677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Bri, given the age of the house the beadboard is likely painted with lead paint. You can get the look with new stuff more safely. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

      If it's something you can't live without, get new beadboard to install. The time and energy you save will justify the cost without even considering the hazard of working with mold and lead paint on the old ones.

    This year I received the blessing of a cutting from my grandmother's fig tree at her house her fig tree was a very old cutting and potentially the Fig cutting that I've got comes from a line of figs in our family that's over a several hundred years old. I am super excited the fig tree has grown to about 3 ft this summer so hopefully I will get to taste some of my grandmother's wonderful heirloom figs! :-) :-) :-)

    When I was rewiring my house I found a couple places where the previous owner cut the plastic coating on wires hooked another wire around that spot. Then put some tarry looking stuff around the bare wire put a plug in on new wire called it good. No junction box or connectors. Another place they had put a nail through, and to fix it put a plastic wire connector for a car on it. That was in the fifties. 2010 is when I rewired my house. I feel much safer now.

    Tear the roof and reframe it, you will have to do that sooner rather then later since you might have a leak that is causing some of the water. You guys are putting a lot of effort and lets be honest doing that later will just mean more work than doing it now. It will be more cost effective even if that means maybe needing a loan. If you can gut the whole house to the frame on your own, get a team to do the mold treatment on the studs and ground, then you can get friends and family to redo the house and it will go faster. Once the roof is new and you have new siding because its needs to go and changed with something that is more breathable you guys are set and can start the work inside. You should look into paint that lets the walls breath both for the inside and outside. For inside you can use paint that is specifically to absorb bad stuff from the air. >Ideally getting the roof and exterior done before the wet season starts

    • @robwestley7370
      @robwestley7370 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the walls are insulated between the inside and outside there will not be so much condensation as warm air or heat hits the cold from outside. The fact that all the basement was sealed especially the windows sealed with plastic again there’s no free flow of air to keep damp at bay.

    Sorry Bri I have to side with Arthur on this one! I too was enamored with bead board and thought it was the PERFECT fit for my dream farmhouse (which was oddly much like your little house) kitchen & dining area. I used it on the walls AND the ceiling....what a huge mistake! Don't get me wrong, I adored the look and even didn't mind the extra work to keep it clean for the first year, maybe even two years, but I eventually had to admit I made a bad choice! Nobody could have convinced me at the time...I had a plan! I painted it with a heavy duty high gloss paint for wooden boats and was absolutely certain that was going to ensure MY SUCCESS where others failed. AND I had a few other tricks up my sleeve like a vacuum attachment for dusting those cracks & a dedicated mop just for my walls/ceilings. Bead board is not a good fit for a working kitchen.

So much plastic material. Laminate flooring etc. No wood around windows. Plastic. Or composite plastic however it is called. Not many natural things anymore which did last a long time replaced with just man made stuff. Love the bead board too. hugs

      True, but there is a non toxic thick paint remover that encapsulates the lead paint & with a scraper, it comes right off. It is a legal way to remove it, & avoids the dust caused by sanding by hand or power sander, & then scraping out the grooves.

      @@vickiburt2676 TY, Vicki. I did enter it 1st as a stand alone , " Attn: Bri -" etc, It's longer & a bit rambling, lol.
      I know a couple who had the bucks to hire professionals to delead their entire big, colonial in Massachusetts. At the time, 35 years ago or so, they were charged about $30K. They came in with all kinds of equipment, dressed in hazmat suits, while my friends, who were expecting a 3rd child, took their 2 small kids & relocated for a while.
      The crew were working on it for weeks, & of course, it was expected that they would be meticulous about removing all the dust produced from their sanding. Apparently they should've hired someone to clean up after those guys.
      Their pediatrician had noticed lead levels in their tests, which was why they decided to spare no expense for the wellbeing of their children to have a team of professionals do the job. After they'd returned home, the kid's lead levels had become much higher.

By the way, there is a way to cut your own new bead board, but keep away from old moldy wood. You two are doing so well. Love how your children interact, well-loved by you two great parents. - greetings from New Hampshire

    It’s really great that you have someone to talk to and get an outside perspective and great that you know how to demolish the insides. I love taking apart older houses and seeing what underneath like old wall paper, siding(so you know rooms were added) and different flooring materials. Well it was another great video. Keep trekking!

    Pass me a fig please! Oh man...those look delicious. Exploding diaper...LOL The girls looked happy to have lover boy back. 😍 When my husband tore into the walls here it was amazing the weird stuff we found and the history of the house too. The original front porch from the 40s and other cool stuff. The layers of walls in that house are crazy!

    Bri , I love beadboard too. I'm with Art , its a lot of work sanding and a messy job. Would love to see pics of the kitchen that inspires you as we will be redoing ours soon too and want the old farmhouse look.

    Just seeing the smiles on your faces makes everything better. Great progress on the house. Hope the sick child gets better soon and you get a rain check on your date. I know its hard but getting a little me and you time as busy parents can make all the difference in a relationship. Speaking from experience.

    If the beadboard comes off ok, you might look into sending it away to be sand blasted clean - be nice to reuse.

    Beadboard looks pretty but it is hard to keep pretty... scrub brushing walls every week or two is not fun, not a good use of time either. My old house had it, but it hadn't been taken care of and was kinda gross. LOL

      I bet in the kitchen with the oils and steam from cooking would make them a dust collector real fast. Beautiful, but worth it?

    I can understand how you feel about the v board. We found quite a bit also. But between lead paint , mold and needing insulation put in we had to get rid of ours also. It broke our hearts.

    We have made a living restoring old homes. And each has wonderful treasures of memories - if only the walls could talk - and quality wood sometimes under layers of 'updating', marbles, carpenters' marks, cards, and newspapers used functionally (but so enjoyable to read all these years later) etc. Enjoy the journey making the finished product 'your home', with all the bells and whistles you would like to make your new space comfortable for your family.

    Our bead board was not salvagable...it was so brittle from being 100 years old that if it didn't split from removing it... it would split when we tried to use it again. We had 5 layers in our farmhouse.. bead board, cardboard, wallpaper, multiple paintings and 1970's paneling and no insulation!! Our framing of the walls and roof were solid..we removed the tin and wormy chestnut boards but the main trusses were solid. Watching you brings back good memories...I love demo!!!

    I can say from experience that bead board is beautiful but does need more cleaning and maintenance. Does get dusty and in the kitchen more greasy. But it isn't hard to manage, just an added regular cleaning task.

    Bead board catches dust. Just be careful.
