Thank you for sharing Andy. I came to own my four Collings guitars via Jackson Browne. He plays and loves 12-fret guitars and his praise for the Gibson Roy Smeck led me down the 12-fret vortex and emptied my bank account. I have two DS2H guitars, an SJ Indian (cutaway), and a SoCo electric. Great fun ... I feel we are kindred spirits. Au revoir .. Daniel (Paris)
Bonjour et bonne année! I use 12 fret guitars because I need wider fretboards, and anyway they just look better (!) It was probably the Jackson Browne factor tat led me to Roy Smeck type instruments. I tried the Gibson Signatures but were too poor sound and presentation quality and ordered a customised Huss and Dalton which was terrible mess from the start. I now have a Santa Cruuz RS - see : th-cam.com/video/0Ku0Nkx8gew/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Andy. I have 2 "heirloom" Collings guitars: a 00 12-fret Custom and an OM-41, both bought used but seemingly little used. I love my HD-28e VTS 12-fret. This year, my "present" from my (deceased) wife is a 12-fret super Jumbo, Kevin Kopp Trail Boss with a custom neck. Way back, Kevin worked at Gibson Acoustic. He wanted to make an SJ-200 12-fret and was told no. He started his own business. Mine has a torrified Adirondack top, maple back and sides with hand rubbed stain. It does finger style and flat picking well.
Nice comparison. Personally I’ve never been able to use a flat pick well. I can do most of what I need with just my fingers. I really like your 000. I also find that to be the most comfortable size. The 00 size is a bit small for my 6 foot frame and the dread is okay but the 000 is just right for me. I enjoyed your playing Andy.
Hi Dan, I feel that all have a purpose, and their own sound. As a one time bluegrasser the dreads were always the first and as you see all are original Martin 12 fret designs because I need the wider fretboards. The 000 is my "do it all" guitar, which I tend to use for teaching, and have just started using for playing out. I'm not a tall guy but I wouldn't think of playing the 00 standing, but playing a small guitar never hurt Marty Robbins .
Yes indeed! Just doesn't really feel right for me. Maybe because I "have to "have medium strings on my dreads (its the law!) and they aren't best for finger picking - for me at least.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the other side of the Great Divide! Loving my Bourgeois OM thermo cured Adirondack- Walnut back and sides large sound hole 12-fret guitar. I would not have been playing that Eastman E40 OM as much. Glad you got it.
Bonjour Andy, of course your dreadnought has more projection due to the body size, in my case dreadnought isn’t the right size for me but I love the powerful projection. I play with a Gibson L-00 and a Taylor Grand Concert, both are 12-fret short scale, they are easier to play with short fingers and short arms, I sacrifice sound for playability. Very good comparisons.
I have no hesitation in saying that I liked the 000 best. It seemed to have the best overall tone by taking the best highs and lows from the other two while mixing in its own mids.
Hi, the '98 00 is relatively new to me and we haven't "melded" completely yet. I suspect that it has been a case queen for some decades. The 2008 DS2h, is fine, but before that I had a '99 DS2h which was a very different guitar, and I regret letting it get away. The 2003 0002h has now achieved some sort of magical tonal maturity, which even with my recent hearing loss, still impresses me. Thanks for watching.
I have no favourites. but the DS is my second DS2h, the 000 has been with me since 2005 and seems to be at its tonal peak - and is the one I tend to teach with. The 00 although the oldest, is my most recent purchase and so, the most expansive. All were bought used.
Hi Andy you can do it all on a good OM or a OOO. Is there a reason you have a OOO rather than an OM? I have no need for a dreadnought but ... if I had the funds I would definitely have a J45.
Hi, you will observe that all my guitars are 12 fretters, which is because I need wider fretboards. That's why 14 fretters with thinner "rhythm" style necks don't suit me.

Hi, sounds good. I'm aware of Kevin's name but have never seen one of his guitars.

As usual a very nice video. John Prine did a great job finger picking his Martin D28. George in Montana

Hi again Mario - It is important to find what best suits your hands and style. (video about hammer-ons and pull ofs recorded yesterday!)
@@SillyMoustacheThank you, I am looking forward to watch it !

Which is your favourite of those guitars and why? And which was the most expensive?

@SillyMoustache Thanks for that. I always like your videos and the wisdom you impart.

The 000 sounds best with both styles to my old ears. Your hands seem to think so as well. That said, all three are really good sounding....
Hi Joel, yes the 000 is my "do it all" guitar and the one I use to teach. Best for 2025.
