Easy Fix for Google Maps Missing Start Button, Only Has Preview

- If the video does not work try the following: 1) Long hold on Maps icon on homescreen 2)Choose "App Info", 3) Choose "Location" select "Allow all the time or "Allow only while using app". Reopen maps and see if it works.

"Not tech savy" is the problem. Google Maps is the problem.
I am 34 and i couldn't figure out too.
Very useful and clear guidance. I followed everything you said but there was no pop up on my screen about location. I was about to give up but decided to go to "Settings" and turned on the location that way. It worked. Start button came up on the Google map. Your video gave me logical ideas. I am 73 and not computer savvy, but your video was a great help. God bless.

Oh, thank goodness. I was beside myself trying to figure out how to fix this. Every solution I found online said it couldn't be fixed. And I use Google Maps constantly. I did get a new phone recently, so knowing how to fix this is something to remember in the future.
It worked. I'm on the road and haven't used Google maps to travel in many months since I don't go out as much as before and thought it was a feature that was removed. Good thing I found your video and used it as I go (had to pull over of course, lol)

@JohnDaniels I just got a new phone. B4 I found ur video I had rebooted my phone (u know the old reboot if something doesn't work). I actually went home to see if my husband knew what to do. He was gone. Searched youtube and the rest, as they say, is history.

Yes this has been happening when I send directions to my phone and it would only give me a preview which left me with no route and have to do it all over again on my phone. Very frustrating!!!! Man thanks to your video I was able to get Google Maps to show the blue "START"... They need to change that and not make it so hidden. I have been using GPS for about 10-15 years now and I was stuck in my car unable to drive & that is ridiculous...

Fantastic - another old guy here but never had a problem with Gmaps on my old phone but the new one had me swearing - despite it knowing where my "Home" was it simply would not "Start" to navigate. Now sorted. Thanks.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I got a new phone recently and when I tried to use the GPS...I couldn't make it work right. (I'm technologically impaired) Luckily last time this happened I had a friend w me so I just used theirs! However, today I'm going to a celebration of life and NEEDED the GPS to work for me! Now I can figure out where I'm going! I cannot thank you enough!!!

The following was done on a Z flip 5 running Android 13.
I followed all your steps which were very clear and nothing changed. I did it again same result. I then went into apps did a force close and open. It all worked.

Yes, this just happened to me this week after getting a new phone. I went to settings, apps, and verified that location was turned on for this app, but that didn't seem to matter. Then I found and followed your instructions and now it's working as expected. Thank you!

Brand new phone, trying to use Google maps couldn’t find that start button, and since we were going somewhere that we needed directions, I went to play store on my phone and downloaded another app so we could get there, thanks for your video, at least now I can fix my Google maps now, my phone is a Nokia G300
I was getting annoyed because I got a new phone and the maps keep giving me only previews. 😅 thank you for the direct and easy to follow steps.

Thanks for the explanation and solution. This "Preview vs Start button" issue was very frustrating. I never had an issue like this with Google Maps in the past.
I was so worried every time I press "Direction"...if "Preview" comes out...I'll have no choice but to rely on the road signages...it's tedious especially when there're too many signages to look at...now...no worries...you solved my problem...tq tq tq
If I don't want to use the "your location", use another address to in stead of, then I can't use the start feature?

Bingo!!! Your instructions work.
But I was making one mistake, which others may be making also.
After entering the destination and the other space asks for "your location", I was clicking in the space and then clicking on my address which comes up in an option list below so that it is chosen and wnters the location space.
You need the press on the two words "Your Location" which is below the two boxes requiring start address and destination address.
When you pres "Your Location," the familiar options which 😢come up in many Apps when they are asking for permission (allow while using the App; allow this once; and, do not allow).
Select "while using this App," and the start button comes up.

Good help, thank you! I checked location and it was enabled. I had to click on the lower right compass icon and enable it there to get mine to give me a "start".

Thank you! This helped me because I found out through your video that my location for maps was off. I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to figure out that was the issue. But I had to go into settings, location, add permissions, as it wasn't coming up in the maps app. Thank you again!!

Thanks. Worked for me. It's frustrating becz Google should be able to dynamically sense where I am and start the route from there if I don't want to start the route from my initial starting point. Still better than using a map, esp. on a motorcycle.

Thanks for this - I do little weekend motorcycle trips and will plan my route on my computer and then send to my phone. However, every time I would open the route on my phone, I would only get the "preview" and could never figure out why. I have a few different phones I use and they all do this.
