- Watch carefully and learn as action movie star and martial arts expert Michael Jai White demonstrates to Kimbo Slice why the mechanics of a traditional boxing punch is flawed. Michael Jai White goes further to demonstrate the science of "non-telegraphic movement" as it relates to punching. Instead of cocking back the elbow, shifting the shoulders, stepping forward with the lead leg or winding up to get power, a non-telegraphic punch is thrown from its exact point of origin with no advance visible clues that a punch is coming.
Bruce Lee said you want your strikes to be felt before it is seen. This requires total relaxation of those muscle groups and proper body mechanics. +jukijunk @ I enjoy Conor McGregor and find him very entertaining. However, his comment about speed and precision are wrong. I am an old timer whose been in the fight game 48 years. Perhaps younger guys were impressed by the comment, but us old timers because we know better.
THE TRUTH ABOUT TIMING
In the fight game, timing is the ability to read your opponent's movement, body position and energy properly with the aim of exploiting any weaknesses at just the right time. It's also the ability to flow with you opponent's movement without being controlled by it by doing certain things at just the right time. Ultimately, timing is the ability to properly read, measure, and capitalize on the movement of your opponent at just the right time. So, timing in and of itself is only relative to a fighters ability to put all of the other components together. If you can't put the other components together than the attribute of timing is not yet fully developed in that fighter.
TIMING + SENSITIVITY + PROPER RESPONSE
Just because a person understands what timing is, doesn't mean they know how to apply timing in relationship to the fight game. Timing is useless without sensitivity. I'm referring to tactical sensitivity which is the ability to "feel" the energy your opponent is giving you at a certain point in time and properly interpret it.
In other words, timing in and of itself is worthless if you cannot interpret the movement or energy of your opponent properly, quickly and instinctively enough to execute a proper response. A skilled Judo man understands how important it is to feel the movement of your opponent (push or pull), interpret it properly, and capitalize on it with a well executed foot-sweep, throw or take down. The same is true with a well trained Wing Chun man who has done chi sao. In both instances the Judo man and Wing Chun man can feel your energy, interpret it properly and win the game.
SO, HOW CAN YOU BEAT SPEED AND POWER?
A faster and more powerful opponent can be beat if you ---- control the distance, master the use feints, setup your combinations, clinch after scoring your own strikes, and dictate the pace. Feel free to share this information with Conor McGregor.

+irondragonjkd Best example of the perfect "reader"of the game is Giorgio Petrosyan. I remember when he was fighting in K1 max. THe guy had such excelent technic and was so amazing at reading his opponent that he hardly ever got hit and always was able to counter properly. I think that is the most exceptional skill, to be able to read your opponent to perfection and being tactically so superior that you are so far ahead in your next moves that you completely dominate a fight. Thats what i love about some of the BJJ fighters aswell, you see them make a move which basically is the set up for what they are planning to do 5 moves later. And in that you can see who is best at the ground game as its basically a form of chess, reckognizing each others moves and anticipating them and using them to your advantage. Something i love to do when im fighting is to basically give them something to aim for, as alot of fighters when they see an "opening" they will go for it, even when its basically a trap you set for them. Whether its by holding left hand lower or when on the ground giving them a chance to change position which for me is the interlude to a submission. I believe that also is a main difference between good fighters and the best, the tactical ability to outfight and outmanouvere your opponent.

I love the car analogy. The eye picks up easier on side-to-side and up-and-down motions, that's absolutely true. An object speeding towards you is harder to detect, or at least, it's harder to estimate the distance between you and the object and how fast that object is closing that distance. This would be true for a car on the road infront of you, and all the more for short distances between two people in the context of a fight. Throwing a haymaker and putting lots of weight behind the punch, your body is doing these motions that the eye picks up on before you're even swinging your arm, making it easier to react to for the other guy. I used to watch Bruce Lee movies as a kid and one thing that always stuck with me is how fast he would jab. It's a very explosive type of punch with a lot of energy behind it, and it comes out of nowhere. Bruce Lee said to leave your hand open while doing it, and only close it and ball it into a fist right before hitting your target. Fluidity. I practiced that and learned to do that, and other people can barely react to it. I can throw it out really fast and really precise, with my fist closing like an inch or less infront of the target. You can throw it out and aim at a person's teeth and stop right infront of it, and they'd jump back as a response when it's way too late. I've never really used it in a fight, never really got into fights, but I'm very sure that such a jab would crack someone's teeth right out. Even when sparring with other kids back in the day, they never wanted to spar with me, even though I'm a small dude, because I could jab them on a biceps and they'd be walking around with a blue mark for a week. And they couldn't evade it or react to it, because it's exactly like mister White says: very difficult in close combat to react to. R.I.P. Kimbo Slice, and may Allah swt forgive Muhammad Ali's sins and accept his prayers and good deeds, Allahuma ameen.

Thanks everybody for watching my video. Its received well over 15 million views as of March 2018. Here's a quick tip to help you students of the fight game generate maximum power when throwing a non-telegraphic punch. I've searched the Internet for a written explanation of how to generate knockout power when throwing non-telegraphic punches as Bruce Lee did. I could not find an written step-by-step break down, so I'm doing it right here.

The secret to creating maximum, knockout power behind a punch is to [generate force and add speed to it]. Speed + force = power. That's the secret. How do you actually do it? Your punch should start from a 'moderately deep stance' (don't spread your feet too far apart) allowing you the ability to pivot off your rear foot. If you're not pivoting off of that rear foot when throwing a straight punch, then you're not generating power. It's that simple.
In other words, [---the ball of your toe on your rear foot is going to pivot---] because you're generating power from pushing off the ground. Then, you're rotating your hips into the punch as your elbow drives forwards whipping your fist into the target. That phrase, 'whipping your fist into the target' is the same as punching with SNAP. Relaxing your shoulders and biceps the moment before you punch is also a key to generating speed. It's no different than trying to swat a fly in your face. Relaxation is critical.
Finally, you got to focus on striking through your actual target. Don't aim to hit the target, punch through the target. If you don't focus through the target then force is lost because the energy of the strike ends the moment your fist touches the target. This is why you see a lost of really fast punchers with no power behind the power. They haven't been taught the importance of generating power off of that rear leg and then aiming through the target.

There's a lot of ways to explain martial arts, but only one way to show it. Here we have to explain, so visualise this... Bruce Lee was so fast at punching but it wasn't only about his speed, it was his technique. The Gung-Fu punch is designed to be sly and unnoticeable. You're not twisting your wrist like in most westernised martial arts systems; and as you aptly put, it's about body mechanics as well. Bruce had the famous 1 inch punch which not many people know how to describe. Notice in any of these videos with him showing this punch how he has to plant and centre himself before he moves. That's because he's using his WHOLE BODY to direct the energy for that punch.. from the feet up the legs through the torso and arm. Think of a snake coiling itself up ready to strike. All you see is the snake readying itself, never knowing when the strike comes. So a non-telegraphic punch involves little obvious movement, and with Bruce's speed he could execute this so well. As soon as you use your shoulder to move a punch, the target knows about it and is ready to either block or avoid. Also not only the shoulder, but the elbow.. as you were explaining about how a car uses brake lights to signal, an elbow is just as effective to signal as a shoulder, only the time to react is shortened. hide the elbow, hide the shoulder, and they never see the punch.
My dad got into far too many fights when he was younger, and he was a smart man. It's all about deception. He was a large bloke but he could move like lightning. Don't give your enemy any
foreknowledge. The lessons being taught here are extremely effective as one who has used them and been taught them by my dad.
When I trained in top ten karate studio in new haven Ct, Michael was an instructor when Lary Rogers was working those days as a fireman. Michael jay white was the best teacher. The guy has multiple black belts in different disciplines. I still remember his lessons. The guy IS great!!!

I like this straight forward approach. It actually expends less energy than a longer throw and every hit adds more stunning effect to the opponent. That's a very intelligent fighting technique.
+USNVA A lot of great champions have awesome techniques in striking. Like for example remember the fight with Anderson Silva v.s. Vitor Belfort? When they put the replay in slow motion, it showed Vitor try to blow Silvas kick, First Vitor blocked high, then they showed him drop his arm low thinking he was gonna kick his sides, then all of a sudden it was too late for Vitor to block his face/chin and got knocked out. This example is the same example in certain fights. Mayweather does the same thing too, a lot of his punches are hard to see because he barely telegraphs his moves.
+zero11322 I don't fight on the street or competitively, but his idea supports my jab techniques. This was how I would throw punches back in my younger days in bars. I was a sailor once upon a time,. We [my friends and I] fought Marines whenever they wanted to start shit for no reason. Most of the time we would start out punching and usually within 30 seconds later end up wrestling to the finish. We twice got our asses handed to us out of three encounters in four years... but we fought for respect, win or lose. I greatly understood my jab potential during those fights. These were stunning blows, but not quite enough to finish a guy off.
USNVA Yeah striking takes a ton of practice and technique to know someone out cold. Mainly because of the precision, speed and power. Some people are fast, but they don't got much power in their striking, some are powerful hits but very slow at striking, sometimes even people who are fast are not accurate.
But nice to know you guys had a great time while fighting. That's why i always suggested to schools here that they teach MMA or other forms of self defense and combat for their P.E. classes. Cause ya never know if some of those kids may have to defend themselves against someone faster, bigger and stronger. Sometimes potential enemies mite even have slight experience in fighting. So its good to teach MMA and various forms of combat and self defense, also teaching kids fundamentals and basics of grappling and striking, etc...
I remember I had two friends back in high school and like one was physically taller, stronger and faster. But the other one was still strong and faster but a lot slimmer but he would always beat me other friend in boxing.
+zero11322 Some of the best times I had fighting were when I was only 16-17 and sparring with my older brother and his so called 'Tae Kwon Do' friend in the back yard at my Moms. It would be about 8 pm or later at night so nobody in the neighborhood could see us. They would always start out "two on one" with me being the one. My brother's friend [thankfully] was not very good at karate. His kicks were very predictable. The kicks "always" came from his dominant right foot. One night, realizing his strategy, it gave me a few opportunities to try countering his predictability. I started with the quick jab a few times to the face, quickly crouch and elbow in hard hyperextending their knees at just the right moment and taking them completely out of the fight. I could hardly believe I won the sparring matches that night!!
USNVA My brother was actually really good when he fought. He was always able to see me telegraph moves even when I tried to not be obvious about it. and he always told me it was because I didn't practice and train a lot so my technique was still bad and able to be telegraphed. He even told me my eye movement, facial expression, shoulders, footwork and legs gave off a signal of what i would obviously do.

Iceiam Jabs aren't meant to have much power behind them. You throw jabs at your opponent's face and he'll put his arms up to protect his face, thus leaving his abdomen wide open. Then give him a full power kidney blow or two and he'll drop his guard, leaving his face wide open to a KO cross. Boxing is like a painful game of chess. Intelligence and experience are as important as strength, endurance, etc.

That's pretty interesting stuff. I've noticed in my own matches that when I pop a jab from a standstill, it lands 90% of the time. Really neat to see a master put it in perspective.
+Cody King Similar thing with Mayweather actually. That is the reason why Mayweather and even Ali always loved to use jabs for everything. Jabs are harder to react to, they are fast, and they are harder to telegraph. Plus if a another boxer or opponent comes in with something heavy or powerful, they will always be open to numerous types of strikes/ counters or openings. Plus with jabs u have more options in movement, and u cans till knock opponents out with Jabs, like if you counter someone with a jab.
