I haven't had a car since last May. Here in not-sunny San Jose, CA, that has proved a challenge this winter. But, after steadily acquiring more and more rain/cold-weather gear, I have found it's possible to exist with just a motorcycle -- if you have lots of patience and don't mind arriving 15 minutes early to de-motorcycle and look like a normal person. One thing I would add to the list is the stark reality of wind chill. You can be sweating en route to the highway and then chilled to the bone after a half hour at 80 MPH (or possibly more; I wrote that just in case my girlfriend reads this).
Up here in the great white north I would need a skidoo suit and a 2 wheel drive Ural Motorcycle to ride year round. My wife said no to that idea though.
My dad told me when got my first bike , "Once you get it in your blood, you'll never get it out". 13yrs of riding later he was right. At one point I had two bikes, one sport, one cruiser and no other vehicle. It was perfect, even through the storms, the heat, the cold and the freezing cold thunderstorms storms. I'm a rider and I ride no matter what. Ride til I die, dieing to ride even if I die riding.

I just got my first motorcycle this year in early june and I dont think I’ll ever go back to a car now but I used to get told by my mother I’d kill myself if I ever rode one the thing I think Is funny tho is now all she wants is pictures of her by it🤣🤣
In the 70s a friend was riding a midsized naked motorcycle on the freeway with no eye protection and was hit by a June Bug and it lodged itself inside his eye socket and he had to go to the hospital and have it surgically removed. It was painful and the whole left side of his face was black and blue for months after. That was over 50 years ago but I will never forget it.
I laughed out loud when you mentioned the wasp, I had one fly into my motorcycle helmet while I was leaned over in long sweeping turn (it somehow popped in under the chin curtain at around 50mph which I still don't understand the physics of it). It took everything in me to not panic-break as the thing suddenly jetted into my helmet and crawled up my cheek and over the bridge of my nose. I still don't know how I managed to avoid getting stung or kept myself from recklessly dropping my bike but that was not something I ever anticipated happening or heard of happening to anyone else until I experienced it myself and started asking about it haha.
Yea, I had one come into my face cover through the gap in the helmet (was summer with visor up). That evil thing was stinging my face nonstop and i was in a very challenging windy road with no where to pull over. Took at least 5 minutes of hell to find a straight with enough room to be off the road. Gloves off, helmet off, pulled face cover off and it flew away. Lucky I am not allergic! But my cheek was sore for a week.
Happy to see you mention hazards involving bridges. 1989 Thanksgiving early morning lost my two buds when they hit the steel grate atop the I110 in Biloxi, MS shortly after it was built. I’ve never quit riding since the late 80’s, but I always warn riders new and old of how unstable a wet steel grate on a bridge can be. My buds were young and most likely pushing each other in the speed dept. in the rain. I miss them dearly and think of them every time I’m on a bridge. RIP Matt and Tim. RESPECT STEEL GRATES ON BRIDGES PLEASE! Thank you for warning others. The hazard is real.
Add number 6: The overwhelming task of getting new tires (tires which typically last between 3,000 - 10,000 miles). Your local dealers will never have what you want in stock. So, you either wait for them to order what you want at a significant markup, or you buy what you want online at the best price. Then you pay someone to mount and balance your tires somewhere within 50 miles (if you are lucky) of where you live. If you can remove the wheels from your motorcycle (have the tools, skill, and wherewithal), while leaving it precariously balanced on a lift for the many days that all this takes (from wheel removal to re-installing). Your noting "smells" hits me the most. The greatest thing about riding in the North Georgia mountains is when I smell a certain aroma that is something like a cinnamon bunn but not. At 71 and having returned to riding six years ago after a forty year hiatus, I know that riding is the best exercise I get, both physical and mental. If you buy from your local dealer regularly, they will eventually stock your tires because they built that relationship with you. Don't give up on your local dealer. Set something up with the mgr if the counter guys are too green. 95% of the time they're accommodating of what you're needing because they want your business.
I also recall my MSF instructors giving some great advice. Don’t force yourself into thinking you NEED to have this “biker persona”, if you make your risk assessment and determine that the fear or any other factor is going to hinder you from having fun-then it’s not worth it and there’s NO SHAME in that.
I learned so much when I finally took the MSF course! I'd been riding for years, without an endorsement, and decided I should get one. Figured the easiest way was the MSF course and went in ready to learn. Man, I never realized how many horrible habits I had! So glad I did it! I told my son he's not allowed to get a bike until he takes the course.
FOMO is the reason I ride and started to ride at age 50. I live near San Diego at the beach and was working from home during the Pandemic. I would hear motorcycles passing by all day (yes, mostly cruisers with their "load pipes saves lives" exhausts blaring at me). I thought to myself "That sounds like it would be fun". I didn't want to miss out on riding. Been riding 2 years now and can't see my life without riding (even after my accident). I am one of those riders you mentioned being jealous of. San Diego has me riding nearly every day. I just have to pay the "Weather Tax". Thanks again for the vid Papa Yam!

That's awesome man. I'm 2i and got my first bike about a month ago. I really don't know why I even wanted one😂😂 I have a truck and sold my car and one night I just said I think I'm going to buy a motorcycle instead of another car fuck it, and so I did😂😂 I love it though so it was a great decision
Country - Portugal City - Lisbon Bridge - Ponte Vasco da Gama The first time i cross it in my bike, it was late in the day and it was a little bit windy but nothing that could cause any trouble.....until i got to the bridge. There are 6 lanes, 3 on each direction and it felt that if i did not pay attention i would easily cross the 3 of them. It was scary but the worst part was still to come. This bridge was a very large set of pillars, very thick. If you go in the lane most to the right, this is where you fell it the most. It is like when a very large and fast truck passes by you in the opposing lane the pillars do the exact same thing. The first time i felt it i almost was trough to the ground because of the way the wind speed and direction changed. Today i'm used to it, but that first time....gezzzz
Regarding cigarettes I got a story. Once I was splitting through heavy city traffic from the grocery shop with my wife on a pillion seat on my beloved BMW K1300S. The mirrors of this bike are wider than your average sportbike. Going between the standing lanes at speed of about 20 mph, I suddenly saw a hand with a cigarette from SUV window right from me just a meter away. A split of second later my right mirror smacks right into his wrist with cigarette flying couple meters away. I think, this day that guy gave up smocking.
Splitting traffic lanes is illegal in most states it should be illegal everywhere what if someone opens their car door in front of you. Anybody that rides a bike without a windshield or a full face shield is nuts would you drive your car without a windshield?
Since buying my first bike last year, I've become one of the few that has managed to pretty much entirely replace my truck. Grocery shopping, lugging crap back and forth to the beach, daily errands, all of it. My wife has an Impreza hatchback, and in the last six months I've only needed to borrow it 3 times to haul bulky items. I think that's pretty good. That said, I'm certainly buying another vehicle when I get back to the mainland and have the ability to build out my workshop again.
The one thing that surprised me is how much an overpass/bridge flexes when bigger vehicles drive onto them. Slightly unsettling when you notice it as you sit in the middle of them waiting for traffic and it feels like you’re on a boat…
I live in New England. Last fall, I sold my car so I could buy my first motorcycle. It's all I have, and I love every second I'm on it. I hated the cost/maintenance of a car. I can't afford a mechanic and I can't fix everything in a car with simple tools. So many things can and will go wrong with a car, and I got REAL tired of shit going wrong with cars. Winter was a little sketchy sometimes, but I managed. I've got a milk crate on my luggage rack and a big-ass waterproof luggage bag on the passenger seat. I'm a single dude who lives a mile from work and a mile from the nearest grocery store, so to sell my car and get a bike was both rational and radical.

The bridge comment reminded me of an unfinished road section I rode on this weekend. If you're familiar, it is the step right before they lay the tar down. It is grooved in the direction of travel. Boy that felt sketchy on a semi-twisty road with mild elevation changes. Almost like ice.
The smell that stands out to me is the spring air and blooming flowers ( I live in Texas) but have enjoyed the smells of nature in most all our contiguous states.Motorcycling ,Scuba Diving and love are the best of my life ( not in that order)😉
Funny thing is, I'm scared of being in cars and driving them but on a bike it's just not at all scary. I could be popping 100mph down a side road on a bike and feel safer than 60 on a highway in a car. So I've just gotten used to having the bike the year round. Torrential rain, freezing cold mornings, 45C afternoons, immense wind speeds, just every weather condition outside of ice and snow I've gotten used to. Nothing ever really prepares you for how slippery that road paint get's when wet though.
At 9:22 lol Something to get your attention every time is the downhill cattle guard in the rain. Any cattle guard should turn on the "survival time" adrenalin, oh, and those 4 X 8 steel plates covering holes in the road ... no throttle, no brake, just chill and survive.
I think the biggest thing I've seriously noticed is just how violent the wind can be as a *ahem* larger rider. Dealing with the wonderfully strong winds off the great lakes yesterday really made me appreciate my car and hate my oversized flesh prison as I battled to maintain speed while essentially being my own personal parachute.
Seattle has drawbridges with metal grate floors. They also have intersections at the ends with stoplights. Since it rains 300 days a year the bridge is usually wet. Believe me it sucks trying to stop.
And you're invisible AND everyone's trying to kill you AND stop lights can't tell you're there! at least that's how it works over here in Kitsappalachia County. But it's fun!
Can relate. Getting all that gear on twice a day to ride to work can get to be a pain, especially in the cold wet PNW. I don't mind the wet or the chilly in the mornings. But when the temps are in the 30's. The thermal liners make me feel like the little brother in The Christmas Story. Taking the pre warmed truck is an easy option. It's the price we pay to not freeze your wedding tackle off. Also another problem no one tells you about. The options. Having too many bikes to choose from in the garage is a serious issue. Do I ride the SM again or opt for ZRX? Maybe the ZX11? Or the CBR? Or maybe I've been too comfortable for too long and should drive the old (1970's) Mini Cooper? Why should I suffer so many choices 🤷 😏
I live in south Mississippi and we have grated bridges and I don’t have an issue with them. I always relax my grip when crossing them which as crazy as it sounds I find it to be more stable.

Crickets. I decided to take a ride down thru southern Idaho and came across miles upon miles of crickets covering the roadway. In some places they were 3-5 inches thick. The stink and slipperiness was off the charts. Over 350K miles, and I've never seen anything like this before. Ride on, my friend.

There was a bridge like that in northern Georgia I had to ride across with my Chevrolet Cavalier. That front wheel car skittered over that bridge like it was driving on marbles. So it isn't just bikes that those bridges are sketchy to drive on!
Same as grates on the road... The grooves on northern roads for the ice. Some tire treat patterns will catch in those grooves, or if they are in a corner it can really make your tires feel really floaty.
Last summer, we had a truck hauling sand loose a large part of its load on the highway. I was sand blasted for days afterward, mostly my knuckles. But it's ok, it's exfoliating and I'm told that's good for the skin.
As a rider from 1982 to 2005 on five macines, 90cc Honda, GT500, H2, GS1000, GS1150...I can confirm all these observations. From the Hornet that goes down the tiniest of openings up top of your jacket & stings you on the way down, to the swarms of flying bugs you don't see...Don't forget the errant dogs, cats & opossum .
I am literally sitting in front of my computer right now staring out my office window while moving my mouse occasionally to make sure the activity light on Teams stays green. So much fun.
One of the best smells ever is a hint of turtle wax from your freshly waxed bike and a freshly cut lawn when your rolling out. That is a life is good moment.
Freshly groove pavement was a shocker back in the 80’s the fist time I hit it…front tire follows one groove while back follows another and hey skid and twitch back and forth trying to realign ….just aim and go while,ignoring all the Side to side movement is a skill you learn fast

Living and/or commuting near any city centre were parking areas are scarce or expensive and traffic is murder, will absolutely make you forget all about your car. I rarely get in my car during the week. Even on Saturday mornings, when I have to do my weekly shopping and various other chore, my bike is always my first choice...
Took a yellowjacket down my jacket at freeway speed. Seconds later, the searing hot poker stabbed me right in the middle of the sternum. Passerby may have gotten some humor out of watching the biker strip at warp Jesus and do the spiderweb dance on the side of the freeway. It hurt like hell and doesn't go away for a long time.
I live near a bay/lake and farmland area and the bugs here are small and won't pelt you like a bullet, but man are they NUMEROUS! It is not uncommon for me to have to clean my helmet, gear, and bike off EVERY RIDE because I always end up getting pelted by hundreds of small mosquitoes or other little things over the course of just a 1 hour ride around my area. I have avoided riding on some nice days just because I'm too lazy to deal with aftermath of having to clean everything every damn time.
This. I try to avoid riding near my house during certain hours of the day because these aphids just swarm by the thousands and smother you in bug guts. It’s ridiculous
A lot of this…air temperature pockets, smells, bugs, flying stones etc actually applies still noticeably to slower two (or three) wheeled machines like fast sport cycles and e-bikes…..All part of the joy!
The nr 4 is actually so important, i live in west Norway, and here in windy days you really understand why is important to take it slow on bridges when you have side sudden gasps of wind.
Back in the day, no helmet or windshield, wearing sunglasses, collected a June bug at 80+ right between the eyes. That brought tears to my eyes. Now have windshield, wear helmet and goggles.

For me it was when the movie Tron legacy came out. I remember the scene with daft punk in the background while he was riding the Ducati Monster at night. That scene/movie was a huge inspiration for me wanting to get into riding motorcycle's.

Watch some Chinese dash cam channels if you want to see some dangerous riding. If you are on your scooter with four kids and you want to make a turn you just go. It doesn't matter if you are crossing four lanes full of trucks, you just hit them. Cars do the same, but at least there is a little more protection. It's just bizarre.
Hi your comment on the air changing as the road twists and turns, I did a bit of flying and your right hot and cold air don't mix very well, which is why gliders can use thermal air so well, also years ago it was said riding a bike is like flying on the ground. Great stuff see ya.
Speaking of bugs. I Rode across Nevada on Hwy50, May 2020, and experienced the Mormon cricket migration. So many crickets that the only clean path on the road was directly in the middle of the lane. The left and right wheel paths were goopy brown slime from the cars smashing them.
Road conditions. No one tells new riders about the changes in the road surface. Going from a nice stretch of asphalt to an old, grated stretch of concrete road can be a shock to newer riders. Try getting out of that rut that 10 years of semis has pounded into the highway so you can pass grampy and granny who insist on going 50 in a 65. It's just something you have to get used to.
You did mention the delay of gearing up, especially annoying when you are 10 minutes late. Related is that everyone in the movies hops on a cycle without helmet (can't mess up the hollywood hair) and also avoid eye protection for some reason. If you commit to riding, you will need 3-4 pair of sunglasses, and a couple pairs of clear eye protection. Even hopping on to get the mail from the end of the driveway. There are 10 different things which can get in your eyes and ruin your whole day.
3:20 I’ve had this happen before. Riding along at 60kph and a bee hits me in the neck right on my adams apple and stung me. It’s a good thing I’m not allergic to bee stings otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here!
Also hailstorms are quite scary! I was (15 and) riding my moped: and I can’t describe the pain to my fingers, even though I wore gloves, that those ice bullets were causing
That's right, by the time I get my bike out, kevlar jeans on jacket, helmet earbuds, gloves and boots definitely negates any time you save by lane splitting.
You're right, it will never replace my car because I'll never own one. I have an sv650 full fairing gen 1 for the summer and I have an 18hp ebike (13.5kw 157 ft lbf) I purpose built for the Canadian winter with fully electric heated and waterproofed clothes to match. Its been -20C, snowing, and im cruising in traffic on my 29 by 2 inch tires ready to fall asleep im so cozy
Never had a bee in my bonnet, but I once had a large grasshopper get inside of it while riding a Honda XR75. At the time, mid 70s, I was wearing a 3/4 helmet with a bubble face shield. The grasshopper got in the bubble and went crazy throwing itself from my face to the shield and back. He got me in the eye and I skidded to a halt, dropped the bike, and ripped my shield off. As far as other juicy bugs, it's always fun to have one hit your sunglasses and have the juice run into your ear. If you ride long enough with 3/4 helmets, or smaller, you get to a point of being able to identify the bug species by taste. And that could one day be a usful skill. If the feces impacts the rotary air impeller and you find yourself on a insect diet, it'll be nice to know which ones taste good or not so bad anyway.
I fixed all my weather problems for suits I have daily one piece which covers rain cold and even summer if you want to open the vents and for perfect weather I have a two-piece where I have jeans and they have padding in them and then a nice mesh jacket always rubber boots two pairs of gloves at least and of course you got to get the neck gator to ward off wind

Up here in northern Canada we can only ride half the year so I only drive cars when there is snow on the ground. Besides that, suck it up and wear rain gear if it’s pouring or whatnot.
Body temperature re-acclimation. Ride to work on a 25°F morning and walk into the office where you will sit and feel the chill from your 30 minute commute, and then sweat for at least the middle half of the day because your body went into cold weather survival mode.

One of my personal favorites is riding at 85mph, at night, with a too large open face helmet. A giant Luna moth hit at the exact right spot to liquify its body and inject itself into my ear canal. I think it touched my brain 😂😂
2:42 Had a little bug splat onto my neck and it hurt as hell, felt like being shot by a pellet from a BB gun but worse.. Left a red mark on my neck for a couple of days.. Ouch
I must say I've never had a car I can't even drive one legally but I do know how to drive a car, however since I got into riding last June i've managed to get on quite well with just a bike but I do believe it really depends on your needs, I need to go to work and occasionally buy things from town but town is so bare these days I just either get it delivered or I'll go with someone when they wanna go shopping so that's that covered, I don't generally carry too much apart from food, water, pump and a chain so I can get by riding everywhere quite easily but I do think it's good practice to accept when the weather might not be the best for riding in such as insane crosswinds but apart from that it is doeable depending on your lifestyle and needs. I imagine it's much harder for those with a family, kids and all that where you can't exactly fit a family of four on a bike.
I know this is an old video. I am not a novice rider. I was riding to work one day , and it just happened to be A military installation. I had all the necessary gear required by federal law, except my face shield. while I was ripping back home to get it I hit one of those very large grasshoppers! It hit my cheek, splattered inside my helmet! I have had the yellow jacket in my helmet as well! I have been riding since 1976. I could go on, and on. you have good information that beginners need to know.
Doin about 50ish on a dirt road wide open on a 125 Honda Elsinore back in the 90s. I cought a rino beatle in the left peck while wearing nothing but a t-shirt. It look like a rock being thrown out of the ditch when it took flight out in front of me. I was left with nowhere to go in the impact was enough to cut me open. Lol
Last year the wife and I went up to the Michigan UP from lower Michigan. The Mackinac bridge spans about two miles. What I didn't realize was it was mostly grated which wasn't a huge issue but a bit sketchy. What did mess with me was being able to see the water a few hundred feet down right underneath me. Majestic af but still sketchy.
I'm glad we don't have bridges like that around here because the thought of eating it on basically a giant cheese grater then getting extruded through it as I get run over by the cars behind me really sketches me out.
Actually the Mackinaw bridge is 5 miles long! It’s 4 lanes wide, the inside 2 lanes are metal grate while the outside 2 lanes are concrete. So it is theoretically possible to ride completely over the bridge on concrete. The problem is that the concrete lanes seem to always have some sort of repair or construction going on so then you get detoured onto the metal grate. I’ve been over the bridge on my bike about 5 times and was only able to ride on 100% concrete one time. It can also be super windy so that adds to the “adventure”!
@@PMCraig trucks can only go 25 mph in the concrete lanes if I remember right. It didn't seem 5 miles long. Time flies. I got used to it the second time. The first time was wild.
Got a B in my shirt once, grabbed it with my right hand, no more gas or front brake, slowed down with back break and onto the gravel shoulder, made it to a stop without dumping it, barely. Zipped up the jacket after that.

I just picked up a 2023 GSX S1000. Suzuki has always made some damn good bikes.
Same here. I haven't rode is 15 years. Decided to start again with a Ryker. Ninja 636 next when my Ryker is paid off. Cruiser or adventure bike after that.
I just got my first motorcycle this year in early june and I dont think I’ll ever go back to a car now but I used to get told by my mother I’d kill myself if I ever rode one the thing I think Is funny tho is now all she wants is pictures of her by it🤣🤣

In the 70s a friend was riding a midsized naked motorcycle on the freeway with no eye protection and was hit by a June Bug and it lodged itself inside his eye socket and he had to go to the hospital and have it surgically removed. It was painful and the whole left side of his face was black and blue for months after. That was over 50 years ago but I will never forget it.

I laughed out loud when you mentioned the wasp, I had one fly into my motorcycle helmet while I was leaned over in long sweeping turn (it somehow popped in under the chin curtain at around 50mph which I still don't understand the physics of it). It took everything in me to not panic-break as the thing suddenly jetted into my helmet and crawled up my cheek and over the bridge of my nose. I still don't know how I managed to avoid getting stung or kept myself from recklessly dropping my bike but that was not something I ever anticipated happening or heard of happening to anyone else until I experienced it myself and started asking about it haha.

Yea, I had one come into my face cover through the gap in the helmet (was summer with visor up). That evil thing was stinging my face nonstop and i was in a very challenging windy road with no where to pull over. Took at least 5 minutes of hell to find a straight with enough room to be off the road. Gloves off, helmet off, pulled face cover off and it flew away. Lucky I am not allergic! But my cheek was sore for a week.

Happy to see you mention hazards involving bridges. 1989 Thanksgiving early morning lost my two buds when they hit the steel grate atop the I110 in Biloxi, MS shortly after it was built. I’ve never quit riding since the late 80’s, but I always warn riders new and old of how unstable a wet steel grate on a bridge can be. My buds were young and most likely pushing each other in the speed dept. in the rain. I miss them dearly and think of them every time I’m on a bridge. RIP Matt and Tim.

They really should do something about that bridge. There's a wreck on it nearly every time it rains.
Add number 6: The overwhelming task of getting new tires (tires which typically last between 3,000 - 10,000 miles).
Your local dealers will never have what you want in stock. So, you either wait for them to order what you want at a significant markup, or you buy what you want online at the best price. Then you pay someone to mount and balance your tires somewhere within 50 miles (if you are lucky) of where you live. If you can remove the wheels from your motorcycle (have the tools, skill, and wherewithal), while leaving it precariously balanced on a lift for the many days that all this takes (from wheel removal to re-installing).
Your noting "smells" hits me the most. The greatest thing about riding in the North Georgia mountains is when I smell a certain aroma that is something like a cinnamon bunn but not. At 71 and having returned to riding six years ago after a forty year hiatus, I know that riding is the best exercise I get, both physical and mental.

We always order our tires in the fall and hope they get to us by spring.
If you buy from your local dealer regularly, they will eventually stock your tires because they built that relationship with you.
Don't give up on your local dealer. Set something up with the mgr if the counter guys are too green. 95% of the time they're accommodating of what you're needing because they want your business.
I also recall my MSF instructors giving some great advice. Don’t force yourself into thinking you NEED to have this “biker persona”, if you make your risk assessment and determine that the fear or any other factor is going to hinder you from having fun-then it’s not worth it and there’s NO SHAME in that.
I learned so much when I finally took the MSF course! I'd been riding for years, without an endorsement, and decided I should get one. Figured the easiest way was the MSF course and went in ready to learn. Man, I never realized how many horrible habits I had! So glad I did it! I told my son he's not allowed to get a bike until he takes the course.

FOMO is the reason I ride and started to ride at age 50. I live near San Diego at the beach and was working from home during the Pandemic. I would hear motorcycles passing by all day (yes, mostly cruisers with their "load pipes saves lives" exhausts blaring at me). I thought to myself "That sounds like it would be fun". I didn't want to miss out on riding. Been riding 2 years now and can't see my life without riding (even after my accident). I am one of those riders you mentioned being jealous of. San Diego has me riding nearly every day. I just have to pay the "Weather Tax". Thanks again for the vid Papa Yam!

The first time i cross it in my bike, it was late in the day and it was a little bit windy but nothing that could cause any trouble.....until i got to the bridge. There are 6 lanes, 3 on each direction and it felt that if i did not pay attention i would easily cross the 3 of them. It was scary but the worst part was still to come. This bridge was a very large set of pillars, very thick. If you go in the lane most to the right, this is where you fell it the most. It is like when a very large and fast truck passes by you in the opposing lane the pillars do the exact same thing. The first time i felt it i almost was trough to the ground because of the way the wind speed and direction changed. Today i'm used to it, but that first time....gezzzz
Regarding cigarettes I got a story.
Once I was splitting through heavy city traffic from the grocery shop with my wife on a pillion seat on my beloved BMW K1300S. The mirrors of this bike are wider than your average sportbike. Going between the standing lanes at speed of about 20 mph, I suddenly saw a hand with a cigarette from SUV window right from me just a meter away. A split of second later my right mirror smacks right into his wrist with cigarette flying couple meters away.
I think, this day that guy gave up smocking.

Splitting traffic lanes is illegal in most states it should be illegal everywhere what if someone opens their car door in front of you. Anybody that rides a bike without a windshield or a full face shield is nuts would you drive your car without a windshield?

Since buying my first bike last year, I've become one of the few that has managed to pretty much entirely replace my truck. Grocery shopping, lugging crap back and forth to the beach, daily errands, all of it. My wife has an Impreza hatchback, and in the last six months I've only needed to borrow it 3 times to haul bulky items. I think that's pretty good. That said, I'm certainly buying another vehicle when I get back to the mainland and have the ability to build out my workshop again.

I live in New England. Last fall, I sold my car so I could buy my first motorcycle. It's all I have, and I love every second I'm on it. I hated the cost/maintenance of a car. I can't afford a mechanic and I can't fix everything in a car with simple tools. So many things can and will go wrong with a car, and I got REAL tired of shit going wrong with cars. Winter was a little sketchy sometimes, but I managed. I've got a milk crate on my luggage rack and a big-ass waterproof luggage bag on the passenger seat. I'm a single dude who lives a mile from work and a mile from the nearest grocery store, so to sell my car and get a bike was both rational and radical.
Fellow Yankee. Learned to ride in the winter after my gaskets went out on my impreza. It's doable to ride here year round if you're determined, mindful, and layer up. Safe travels!
The bridge comment reminded me of an unfinished road section I rode on this weekend. If you're familiar, it is the step right before they lay the tar down. It is grooved in the direction of travel. Boy that felt sketchy on a semi-twisty road with mild elevation changes. Almost like ice.
The smell that stands out to me is the spring air and blooming flowers ( I live in Texas) but have enjoyed the smells of nature in most all our contiguous states.Motorcycling ,Scuba Diving and love are the best of my life ( not in that order)😉
Funny thing is, I'm scared of being in cars and driving them but on a bike it's just not at all scary. I could be popping 100mph down a side road on a bike and feel safer than 60 on a highway in a car. So I've just gotten used to having the bike the year round. Torrential rain, freezing cold mornings, 45C afternoons, immense wind speeds, just every weather condition outside of ice and snow I've gotten used to. Nothing ever really prepares you for how slippery that road paint get's when wet though.
At 9:22 lol Something to get your attention every time is the downhill cattle guard in the rain. Any cattle guard should turn on the "survival time" adrenalin, oh, and those 4 X 8 steel plates covering holes in the road ... no throttle, no brake, just chill and survive.
I think the biggest thing I've seriously noticed is just how violent the wind can be as a *ahem* larger rider. Dealing with the wonderfully strong winds off the great lakes yesterday really made me appreciate my car and hate my oversized flesh prison as I battled to maintain speed while essentially being my own personal parachute.
Seattle has drawbridges with metal grate floors. They also have intersections at the ends with stoplights. Since it rains 300 days a year the bridge is usually wet. Believe me it sucks trying to stop.

Getting all that gear on twice a day to ride to work can get to be a pain, especially in the cold wet PNW.
I don't mind the wet or the chilly in the mornings.
But when the temps are in the 30's. The thermal liners make me feel like the little brother in The Christmas Story.
Taking the pre warmed truck is an easy option.
It's the price we pay to not freeze your wedding tackle off.
Also another problem no one tells you about.

I live in south Mississippi and we have grated bridges and I don’t have an issue with them. I always relax my grip when crossing them which as crazy as it sounds I find it to be more stable.

Crickets. I decided to take a ride down thru southern Idaho and came across miles upon miles of crickets covering the roadway. In some places they were 3-5 inches thick. The stink and slipperiness was off the charts. Over 350K miles, and I've never seen anything like this before. Ride on, my friend.

There was a bridge like that in northern Georgia I had to ride across with my Chevrolet Cavalier. That front wheel car skittered over that bridge like it was driving on marbles. So it isn't just bikes that those bridges are sketchy to drive on!

Same as grates on the road... The grooves on northern roads for the ice. Some tire treat patterns will catch in those grooves, or if they are in a corner it can really make your tires feel really floaty.
Last summer, we had a truck hauling sand loose a large part of its load on the highway. I was sand blasted for days afterward, mostly my knuckles. But it's ok, it's exfoliating and I'm told that's good for the skin.

As a rider from 1982 to 2005 on five macines, 90cc Honda, GT500, H2, GS1000, GS1150...I can confirm all these observations. From the Hornet that goes down the tiniest of openings up top of your jacket & stings you on the way down, to the swarms of flying bugs you don't see...Don't forget the errant dogs, cats & opossum .

Freshly groove pavement was a shocker back in the 80’s the fist time I hit it…front tire follows one groove while back follows another and hey skid and twitch back and forth trying to realign ….just aim and go while,ignoring all the Side to side movement is a skill you learn fast

Took a yellowjacket down my jacket at freeway speed. Seconds later, the searing hot poker stabbed me right in the middle of the sternum. Passerby may have gotten some humor out of watching the biker strip at warp Jesus and do the spiderweb dance on the side of the freeway. It hurt like hell and doesn't go away for a long time.
A motorcycle was my only form of transportation for the 3 years I was stationed in Alaska. So in the 'Lower 48' everyday is a perfect day to ride.
I live near a bay/lake and farmland area and the bugs here are small and won't pelt you like a bullet, but man are they NUMEROUS! It is not uncommon for me to have to clean my helmet, gear, and bike off EVERY RIDE because I always end up getting pelted by hundreds of small mosquitoes or other little things over the course of just a 1 hour ride around my area. I have avoided riding on some nice days just because I'm too lazy to deal with aftermath of having to clean everything every damn time.
This. I try to avoid riding near my house during certain hours of the day because these aphids just swarm by the thousands and smother you in bug guts. It’s ridiculous
A lot of this…air temperature pockets, smells, bugs, flying stones etc actually applies still noticeably to slower two (or three) wheeled machines like fast sport cycles and e-bikes…..All part of the joy!
When I was a teen I had a wasp go into my helmet while riding my dirt bike on the street. It stung me on the head and I crashed.
The nr 4 is actually so important, i live in west Norway, and here in windy days you really understand why is important to take it slow on bridges when you have side sudden gasps of wind.

For me it was when the movie Tron legacy came out. I remember the scene with daft punk in the background while he was riding the Ducati Monster at night. That scene/movie was a huge inspiration for me wanting to get into riding motorcycle's.
Let me tell you about the wasp that went up my sleeve and was apparently a little put off by the whole thing and then there was the bird that did a kamikaze and hit me in the chest at 90mph or maybe that deer that was tired of living and jumped right in front of me at 65mph. The world is full of danger but that will never stop me from riding.
Watch some Chinese dash cam channels if you want to see some dangerous riding. If you are on your scooter with four kids and you want to make a turn you just go. It doesn't matter if you are crossing four lanes full of trucks, you just hit them. Cars do the same, but at least there is a little more protection. It's just bizarre.
Hi your comment on the air changing as the road twists and turns, I did a bit of flying and your right hot and cold air don't mix very well, which is why gliders can use thermal air so well, also years ago it was said riding a bike is like flying on the ground. Great stuff see ya.
Speaking of bugs. I Rode across Nevada on Hwy50, May 2020, and experienced the Mormon cricket migration. So many crickets that the only clean path on the road was directly in the middle of the lane. The left and right wheel paths were goopy brown slime from the cars smashing them.

Road conditions. No one tells new riders about the changes in the road surface. Going from a nice stretch of asphalt to an old, grated stretch of concrete road can be a shock to newer riders. Try getting out of that rut that 10 years of semis has pounded into the highway so you can pass grampy and granny who insist on going 50 in a 65. It's just something you have to get used to.
You did mention the delay of gearing up, especially annoying when you are 10 minutes late.
Related is that everyone in the movies hops on a cycle without helmet (can't mess up the hollywood hair) and also avoid eye protection for some reason. If you commit to riding, you will need 3-4 pair of sunglasses, and a couple pairs of clear eye protection. Even hopping on to get the mail from the end of the driveway. There are 10 different things which can get in your eyes and ruin your whole day.
It's not for the hair. It's so you can see their face. Something about Hollywood thinks we are dumb if we can't see the riders face.
3:20 I’ve had this happen before. Riding along at 60kph and a bee hits me in the neck right on my adams apple and stung me. It’s a good thing I’m not allergic to bee stings otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here!

I have an sv650 full fairing gen 1 for the summer and I have an 18hp ebike (13.5kw 157 ft lbf) I purpose built for the Canadian winter with fully electric heated and waterproofed clothes to match. Its been -20C, snowing, and im cruising in traffic on my 29 by 2 inch tires ready to fall asleep im so cozy
Those weird cold pockets are crazy. Something I've truly never experienced before I started riding.
Never had a bee in my bonnet, but I once had a large grasshopper get inside of it while riding a Honda XR75. At the time, mid 70s, I was wearing a 3/4 helmet with a bubble face shield. The grasshopper got in the bubble and went crazy throwing itself from my face to the shield and back. He got me in the eye and I skidded to a halt, dropped the bike, and ripped my shield off.
As far as other juicy bugs, it's always fun to have one hit your sunglasses and have the juice run into your ear. If you ride long enough with 3/4 helmets, or smaller, you get to a point of being able to identify the bug species by taste. And that could one day be a usful skill. If the feces impacts the rotary air impeller and you find yourself on a insect diet, it'll be nice to know which ones taste good or not so bad anyway.

I fixed all my weather problems for suits I have daily one piece which covers rain cold and even summer if you want to open the vents and for perfect weather I have a two-piece where I have jeans and they have padding in them and then a nice mesh jacket always rubber boots two pairs of gloves at least and of course you got to get the neck gator to ward off wind

Up here in northern Canada we can only ride half the year so I only drive cars when there is snow on the ground. Besides that, suck it up and wear rain gear if it’s pouring or whatnot.

Body temperature re-acclimation. Ride to work on a 25°F morning and walk into the office where you will sit and feel the chill from your 30 minute commute, and then sweat for at least the middle half of the day because your body went into cold weather survival mode.

One of my personal favorites is riding at 85mph, at night, with a too large open face helmet. A giant Luna moth hit at the exact right spot to liquify its body and inject itself into my ear canal. I think it touched my brain 😂😂
2:42 Had a little bug splat onto my neck and it hurt as hell, felt like being shot by a pellet from a BB gun but worse.. Left a red mark on my neck for a couple of days.. Ouch
I must say I've never had a car I can't even drive one legally but I do know how to drive a car, however since I got into riding last June i've managed to get on quite well with just a bike but I do believe it really depends on your needs, I need to go to work and occasionally buy things from town but town is so bare these days I just either get it delivered or I'll go with someone when they wanna go shopping so that's that covered, I don't generally carry too much apart from food, water, pump and a chain so I can get by riding everywhere quite easily but I do think it's good practice to accept when the weather might not be the best for riding in such as insane crosswinds but apart from that it is doeable depending on your lifestyle and needs.
I imagine it's much harder for those with a family, kids and all that where you can't exactly fit a family of four on a bike.

I know this is an old video. I am not a novice rider. I was riding to work one day , and it just happened to be A military installation. I had all the necessary gear required by federal law, except my face shield. while I was ripping back home to get it I hit one of those very large grasshoppers! It hit my cheek, splattered inside my helmet! I have had the yellow jacket in my helmet as well! I have been riding since 1976. I could go on, and on. you have good information that beginners need to know.
Doin about 50ish on a dirt road wide open on a 125 Honda Elsinore back in the 90s. I cought a rino beatle in the left peck while wearing nothing but a t-shirt. It look like a rock being thrown out of the ditch when it took flight out in front of me. I was left with nowhere to go in the impact was enough to cut me open. Lol
Last year the wife and I went up to the Michigan UP from lower Michigan. The Mackinac bridge spans about two miles. What I didn't realize was it was mostly grated which wasn't a huge issue but a bit sketchy. What did mess with me was being able to see the water a few hundred feet down right underneath me. Majestic af but still sketchy.
It's hard not to look down when crossing the bridge.

I'm glad we don't have bridges like that around here because the thought of eating it on basically a giant cheese grater then getting extruded through it as I get run over by the cars behind me really sketches me out.
Actually the Mackinaw bridge is 5 miles long! It’s 4 lanes wide, the inside 2 lanes are metal grate while the outside 2 lanes are concrete. So it is theoretically possible to ride completely over the bridge on concrete. The problem is that the concrete lanes seem to always have some sort of repair or construction going on so then you get detoured onto the metal grate. I’ve been over the bridge on my bike about 5 times and was only able to ride on 100% concrete one time. It can also be super windy so that adds to the “adventure”!
@@PMCraig trucks can only go 25 mph in the concrete lanes if I remember right. It didn't seem 5 miles long. Time flies. I got used to it the second time. The first time was wild.

Got a B in my shirt once, grabbed it with my right hand, no more gas or front brake, slowed down with back break and onto the gravel shoulder, made it to a stop without dumping it, barely. Zipped up the jacket after that.
