    Here the Deities approve,
The God of Musick and of Love,
All the Talents they have lent you,
All the Blessings they have sent you,
Pleas'd to see what they be-stow,
Live and thrive so well below

This is the first ode to the day of Saint Secilia. It was written by young Mr. Purcell in 1683.
    It's very-very nice!

Dommage que l'orthographe défaillante enlève beaucoup au compliment: Quel orchestre sublime et quelles voix! Une pure merveille...

For a moment, at 11:42 I was waiting for the orchestral beginning of "Wayward sisters, you that fright the lonely traveller by night..." ♻

Great authentic performance. Who is singing ? I guess Deller . Does someone know out there ? Thanks very much for uploading. Groetjes uit Amsterdam.

The orchestral sound is shocking if compared to more up to date versions. Yet this was one of the first recordings available forty or fifty years ago, with Alfred Deller conducting (?) and singing the great aria "Hear the Deities approve".

      Not shocking to me.
      What is “up to date”?
      Simply a question of taste.

Pre-Beethoven sure knew how to mix it up nicely.

Mr Purcell's music can certainly transcend a rather slow rendition - the voices are lovely and the speed helps bring out the humour (the text is no doubt grossly flattering of the Musickal Society who commissioned it!)

Terribly antiquated version, with none of the swing of baroque versions.

great performance, lets see more of the antiquated versions.

You know a better version? Because I prefer a more baroque sound as well

respect to everyone's different tastes, but this is the best cut i've heard; sensitive, delicate, acutely realised and then richly profound....more modern cuts seem to rush to get to the end....ah well....

The beginning sounds like The Three Stooges:

this is horrendous. historically informed performances are so much better.

      I hate "historically informed" performance.

This is Alfred Deller leading The Deller Concort. At the time (the 1950s) there were no better "informed" musical ensembles performing Purcell. Deller was "the" Purcell go-to.

nothing worst than a ''hysterically...I mean historically informed performance''

Ok folks, lets not blow are selves up. From my perspective (I have the hma (www.amazon.com/Purcell-Cecilias-Cecilia-Welcome-Pleasures/dp/B000007SXU) Herreweghe version; which is mid tempo) I personally perfer this one but I can see something fun it this slower tempo. More lush if you will.. thank you. pjd
