I believe in "don't practice licks, create them on stage", in that way you'll sound spontaneous. If you practice them, the brain will always bring them upfront and they'll rule your solo.

Yeah but what informs your creativity, surely it has to be based around what's already been said, else you're formulating your own language

Focus on practice, should be From practising scales, modes, arpegios and all intervals etc, of course you'll not just go up and down your scales when you solo on stage bcos that's what you've practiced....E.g Create a rhythm when soloing then create your lick from those scales etc....well I understand soloing is personal end of the day.

True, I think both angles are useful

Your solo, do whatever you want! People have forgotten that jazz is about freedom of expression...

i think its one way when you're learning and its different when you're expressing yourself in your way based on all that stuff that youve learned in your life. Thelonius Monk could just stop playing in the middle of the solo and just sit and maybe play one bote here and there and it would sound genius but i gotta drill 2 5 1 and learn canon first before breaking it :)

I think in the end, all that really matters is: do YOU think you played the lick too many times.
