  • The famous Adagio, purporting to be based on musical fragments by Tomasi Albinoni (1671-1751), has only the most tenuous of links to him. It is almost entirely the work of the composer's biographer Remo Giazotto (1910-1998) and was composed in 1958. Its title in full translates as "Adagio in G minor for strings and organ, on two thematic ideas and on a figured bass by Tomaso Albinoni". Who made the organ transcription that I am playing, I do not know - quite possibly Giazotto himself, as there is no other name on the copy. It's not bad as pastiches go, and it is certainly popular. Whether it does Albinoni's reputation any good (or otherwise!) is debatable, though it does draw attention to a somewhat neglected figure of the era.
