That lexan (poly carbonate) is amazing. It won't shatter.
Thanks to the beer problems of the world, my factory bought 1/4" thick poly carbonate to make sneeze guards for clients (because we couldn't get more 1/4" acrylic that week). So we tested both materials, and had leftovers after we did cutting, drilling and bending tests on them. Some small parts were discarded.
I took 5 pieces of each material, and did some non-scientific tests at the range:
    (1) a single subsonic Remington 22LR fired from a handgun at 12 yards shattered 3 layers of acrylic, and didn't even scratch the 4th layer (they were all stacked together without spacers, with the poly layers behind them, resting on the sand backstop in a "wood bunker that we normally hang steel targets in.
    (2) Same shot didn't go through 1 layer of poly.
    (3) "Normal velocity" (1150 fps) American 22LR punched through 1 layer and was stopped by 2nd layer of poly (there were 3/8" spacers between the layers).
    (4) Hand loaded 1050 fps 124 gr coated 9mm was stopped by layer 3 of poly with a big dent.
    (5) Blazer Brass 115 gr 9mm stopped by layer 4 of poly with a small dent. (All of those had 3/8" thick wood spacers between the layers).
    (6) Lastly, with no spacers : "Ruger Only" high velocity hand load 250 gr hard-cast lead 45 Colt was stopped by layer 4 with a huge dent that cracked a bit, and layer 5 had a big dent because the layers were all touching each other.
What I learned is that you don't want to get shot at. Ever.

i'll just mention something here that is worthy of note. if you do put a laptop computer into a book bag with the intent that it will sustain damage, you need to take into account the type of battery in the device. lithium ion battery packs, as is most common in newer laptops, can and most likely will auto ignite when perforated, and if you have one strapped to your back, you could sustain serious burns. I am in no way criticizing Pauls' demonstration, just sharing some info. Keep up the good work!

Hello! Media professional/IT guy/firearms enthusiast here. If you were to purchase a laptop sleeve you could use that to hold your laptop . . . or could buy a larger one and put a ceramic tile/layers of polycarbonate in there and slide both into your bag. That way you could layer your ceramic tile on the outside of your books and no one would be the wiser. Those of you who are a bit handy could probably sew a cloth cover to do the same job for a lot cheaper. Just a thought.

A subtle way to add thin polycarbonate sheets could be to slide them in both pockets of a book slipcover before sliding it over the covers of the book. The polycarbonate would be completely covered and you could reasonably assert that the purpose is to protect the book from damage.

There is one material if you can find some is not considered bullet proof however, is quite resistant to pistol rounds and light rifle cartridges. Fiberglass laminated sheet material. I obtained some from cut out sections from a factory that produced large fiberglass parts. It was about 5/8” thick and I used the cutout pieces for targets shooting. The bullets were captured in the plate. And the targets lasted quite a long time. Fiberglass is much lighter than steel of the same size and thickness and is not as costly as bullet proof rated materials. You can purchase different size plates for a reasonable cost from suppliers.

  • @metamorphicorder
    @metamorphicorder 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Something i think would make this tick all the boxes is to start with as a high quality and padded backpack as you can. Hit up thrift stores and goodwills, they will often have really good packs for cheap.
Preferably if you can find one, get one that has a security pocket that faces the back. This is zippered compartment that is on the outside of the bag but its on the part that rests on your back when you wear it. Its put there so you can put things like a laptop or other high value items in it and the zipper can easily be opened by someone standing behind you to help prevent theft.
This would be the perfect place to put a ceramic plate, it will totally be out of sight even when the back is open and things are taken out of it.
You could even take the polycarb sheets and duct tape them to either side of the plate and then slide the whole thing in there.
If you cant find one like that then learn a new skill and figure out how to cut open a slit and add a zipper so that you can make your own hidden compartment.

One suggestion I would make would be to alter (or if you don't sew, HAVE someone alter) the book bag to conceal the "armor" elements at the back of it. I have actually done this to one backpack myself, utilizing a chunk of timed-out lvl. 2A body armour, and it is virtually impossible to visually detect. The added weight might be a bit of a giveaway, but I doubt anyone but me will be lifting it. (DON'T try taking one of these on an airplane ANYWHERE... you will end up having a VERY unpleasant experience with airport security!) I am planning to make a further upgrade based on these videos to increase the bullet resistance of mine to include some rifle-calibre potential.

I purchased some BAM 3A fiberglass plates awhile back for like $15 a piece just to shoot at for fun, they are about 6" x 8". In 2016 I was shot in the back with a CO2 pellet gun leaving work at 6:15 PM Friday night. It went super sonic because I heard a loud crack just as it hit me just to the right of my spine, next to my right shoulder blade. It was late November and had on a jean jacket, a fleece vest, a fleece shirt and a cotton T-shirt. The polymer tip was stuck in my back. The shots came from a car on the street, all I noticed was that it was a tan 4 door sedan. The police were called & as they arrived another guy came running up the street saying he too had been shot in the back. There were no other reports by anyone else and since it was a mere flesh wound, no investigation was done, even though there were cameras all over the traffic lights & the building I just left had multiple cameras at every door, but they were all pointed at the doors & did not pick up anything on the sidewalk.
I bought a backpack that weekend & stuffed it fairly full of 8 & 1/2 X 11 inch note pads and two text books. I thought about ceramic tile, but since I retired in 2018, I don't worry about that much anymore. No one would walk with me to the parking ramp for the next two years saying they didn't want to get shot next. HaHa. I did inquire about body armour at a gun store, when asked why & I told them all the heads in the store snapped around to see who had said that & a few asked where I worked (downtown St. Paul, Minn.). It felt like being stung by 5 bees all at once.

I went and foraged all the hard cover books I had around the house. Various sizes good for torso and sides. I should have enough to make two vests (maybe ask some friends for their books if need be). I do think it’s a good option because even if you find yourself in an encounter, it’ll be knife, blunt object, or low caliber handgun...if it’s not, you’re screwed anyways lol

The sheer amount of books I carried in high school might have been enough to stop a 556er or more. I think it might be a good idea to train school kids in forming a Spartan shield wall with backpacks. Would be better than clammering in panic and give them something to hold onto dear life with.

According to the US Army urban combat manual, the maximum barrier penetration with 5.56mm NATO and 7.62mm NATO takes place at 200 meters--at under 20 meters the 5.56mm isn't at its maximum penetration capability even with military FMJ projectiles.

Judging from the comments on your videos over a considerable period of time, most of us subscribed fans seem to enjoy the "annoying talking bits more" than the shooting parts...myself included.
Also, we really want that action figure of you with the pull-string activated talking box saying things like "I'm using a Berreta 92fs with Remington green and white box 9x19 full metal jacket" and "you be the judge!" Plus, fun others like "I'm what you call a professional"

I've used the handgun is the same as a fire extinguisher analogy many times. I don't want my house to burn down, but I damn sure have fire extinguishers that I hope I never need. Also, I've trained with my fire extinguishers, I know how to use them at a moments notice, otherwise they're not nearly as effective. Same with my firearms. Also, I'm watching this on a Dell M6300 that looks very similar to the one that you shot. Great video Paul!

I appreciate the ideas you present.
I'm curious if resistance increases with a ceramic tile sandwiched between 2 layers of polycarbonate, duct taped of course.
If test the theory here but we are currently under stage 2 and 3 fire bans. That means no target shooting outside of approved gun ranges.

The tile would be more durable, depending on the caliber, against the steel. The steel would not allow any give and would lessen the flex of the tile when hit.

Hey Paul, we all know that velocity of a round can be greatly affected by barrel length (some cartriges more than others)
But is there a general and significant effect of barrel length on Accuracy (especially in 9mm) ?
    Assuming there is:
Is the difference in accuracy between platforms greater than that of barrel length?
You could you probably get an AR-9 with a short and a long barrel to test the out easily, or just buy a longer/shorter barrel for your Beretta Storm Rifle .
    Always wondered about this, thanks,
    Thanks!

I have a similar story in regards to preparedness.
I used to live and work in developing non western countries for a very long time. I have been in situations where i had no food or supplies. I have also been in Epidemics.
So Last year i decided good is well enough and returned back "home". I did as i always do and set up a supply of food and basic necessities. These included Masks and PPE. When the Coronavirus Pandemic hit my neighbours and family basically accused me of "being giddy" it happened. Some even seriously asked if i had something to do with it because i clearly have prepared for it.
This mentality is extremely common in western countries but since i was away from home for most of my life, their response was just Alien to me. Are we so pampered that we cannot even fathom that bad things happen? Its no wonder that we are neither doing Jack nor Shit about Climate change. You hate Coronavirus? Come and see what comes next buddy! You aint seen nothing yet!
