John is an amazing song writer but from what I've gleaned over the last 30 years of being a fan, the man is a bitter, cynical man, and as much as he'd like to believe in humanity, he's just too scared by what he believes is the worst he's seen in regards to man's inhumanity to man (not to mention his belief that he's not been properly recognized for his songwriting compared to the likes of Springsteen), and everyone doing everything out of self-interest, regardless of whether they are a farmer, a fan, or fellow musician. I think he really does believe that most people are hardwired to "do it to your buddy before he does it you". And his grandma story, he's was still telling it on his latest tour (and the tour before). I could be wrong, but that's just my take. And. like I said, I've seen him in every tour since '87. And that's a lot of tours. But, maybe I'm projecting.

I agree. Troubled Man is what John is. Gordon Lightfoot is also an unbelievable songwriter!
