Hi everyone! I hope you enjoyed this video. As much as possible, I tried to let you know as little as possible about the films and series so I wouldn't spoil you. I know I tend to avoid watching trailers for films I'm interested in, as they often reveal too much. I hope I managed to make you curious about some of them! I also realise there are so many things I forgot to say! Regarding Peau d'Âne by Jacques Demy, the music is by Michel Legrand, which composed music for other Jacques Demy musicals as well (Les parapluies de Cherbourg, Les demoiselles de Rochefort). Damien Chazelle was actually really inspired by these French musicals when he was working on Lala Land, and even asked Michel Legrand if he would compose the music for Lala Land. There actually are so many similarities between Lala Land and Les demoiselles de Rochefort, so if you liked Chazelle's film you may really enjoy Les demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Ladies of Rochefort).
"Portrait of a lady on fire" needs to be watched with good headphones or a good soundbar/speaker. The sound editing especially during the painting is so relaxing but also makes it more interesting. Every Brushstroke over the canvas just has this attention grabbing swish to it. The dialogue also is engaging as hell.
This is a really unique idea for a video! Also it is super useful for English speakers learning French who want recommendations for French films, you can search for recommendations online but to get them from a native French speaker is so much better 😀
Excellent as always, I love the idea of film/tv reviewing. It is great to hear someone review 'Much ado about nothing', one of my favourites. Continue the great work!
Recently watched The Love Witch this past year and absolutely fell in love with it. It was such a gorgeous film, not only in the color palette and the cinematography but the story and characters’ story progression as well
'The Fly' is such a wonderful, and literal, adaptation of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis.' True horror should never be about the monster itself, but about society. About how we, humanity, are the real monsters.
I’ve been fascinated by the depth of articulated cultural taste explored on this channel. I appreciate all of it. Coffee, art, film, indie games. Everybody loves this stuff. I agree about horror. One interesting thing about horror is that reinterpretation is always a valuable quality, so I’ve heard that the fly reinterpreted as obvious things like puberty or Midsommer really being about relationships or Silent Hill being laden with metaphor. At its best it’s a genre that uses cyphers to talk about difficult subjects. If you can’t say it anywhere else but you really need to, then horror. Romance is something people forget they’re into until it triggers them (kinda like ASMR) if you’re feeling down or lonely or cynical, than a really human romance might be something to look for. All these recommendations are amazing and alot of them are the kind of thing you have to give a second chance to that you probably wont regret. All the best things require you to stick with them a few moments. A few Fincher movies are the same in spite of being perfect as are most things by Joss Whedon or Fantastic Planet and Watchmen is definitely like that too, or anything based on Alan Moore. Appreciating alot of things can mean curbing your cynicism. Some times it takes 20 minutes or an hour or with games maybe a few hours. Sometimes we only understand in hindsight. I think the difference is whether we want to try to understand.
The Fly is a very gripping film. You feel Seth’s angst and (sorry for hint of spoilers) desperation then sadness at the end. There are some gross parts, and it’s a bit 80s-dated, but a good film. Thanks for the rest of your recommendations-some good stuff to check out.
dude The Fly is insane. It's all pretty normal, until the arm wrestling scene. Oh also the lamb in the telepod is insane. I would not have suspected that to be your first recommendation, as it's pretty wild, but thats cool that you're a fan of that stuff.
I loved Buffy as well, Friday nights use to be Buffy at 8PM then Angel at 9PM (UK), good times. Also was a big fan of the French/Japanese cartoons Ulysses 31 and Mysterious Cities of Gold as a kid (Ulysse 31 and Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or). If you haven't seen it I recommend watching Afterlife (starring Ricky Gervais) on Netflix.
-Portrait of a lady on fire -the fly -les demoiselles de Rochefort -grave -much ado about nothing (1993) -Buffy -waterlilies (2007) -Donkey Skin (1970) -Gone Girl (2014) -The Watchmen Series (2009) -the fantastic planet (1973) -Showgirls (1995) -Fleabag (2016)
Buffy!! I was a massive fan of that when I was younger as well, used to have DVD's of some of the series. Anthony Head is one of my fave actors - he's so understated in everything he does but he's so good :).
@@BehindTheMoons Not sure if you've ever seen it, but the British version of Merlin - starring as Uther :). He's also been in Doctor Who - albeit as a villian!
Oh nice, I'm looking forward to seeing what you enjoy watching! Don't feel weird about how your recommendations turned out, I love horror films and series (esp. anthologies), but I'm also reading like half a dozen romance webcomics right now too, so go figure XD
Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker is fantastic if you're ever stumped for something to watch ! I cannot stop watching it. Thank you for your recommendations, I will check some of these out ! I constantly hear good things about La La Land so that's long overdue.
I'm not sure you're looking for recommendations in return, but since it's French I'll throw The Guardians (2017) out there. It's quite apt for this channel because it's very slow and atmospheric, I found myself immersed in the setting (WWI rural france), being a country boy it has an incredibly nostalgic feel. I wouldn't say it's perfect on the writing front, but it's rare to find films set in that era that feel so grounded and real.
Great job I really enjoyed this. I liked the fly too. Your voice sound great with the microphone set up you are using. I will have to check out the French films you described. Nicely done
Love your shirt (?) or jacket. Good choices, The Fly is quite a thrill ride and Goldblum is excellent. Very soothing to hear you talk about this stuff.
Buffy! I rewatched all of Buffy and Angel a few years ago and they're still amazing! A warning for those who plan to watch it for the first time: Don't watch the HD Remaster, watch the DVDs. The HD Remaster was butchered and you can find a video on TH-cam that explains all of that.
Haven't seen alot of French films outside of those from Melville, but I'll have to add these to the watch list. Brotherhood of the Wolf (Les Pact de loups) might have been the only French film I had seen until my late teen years lol
Awesome video, Cronenburg and Verhoeven are two of my favorite directors/writers and I do love body horror lol. Videodrome and Starship Troopers would be my two picks because of all the dissection that can be done with both movies in terms of themes. The best movies are always the ones that can be watched and enjoyed as is but also taken apart for a totally different perspective on it! I would recommend Possession(1981) by Andrzej Żuławski if you haven't seen it one of my favorite movies of all time. Also I would check out From Beyond and Re-Animator by Stuart Gordon if you dont mind a bit of camp.
France has a great tradition of body horror with such a classic of that genre as 1960 Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without A Face), a movie I can really recommend.
I dunno... Once upon a time I used to be a bit of a movie buff. My Dad liked space and westerns, my Mom likes westerns and various documentaries, musicals and action films. I enjoy watching your ASMR videos and you have a very creative imagination with interesting content. Beautiful, inspiring and soft spoken in role-play. An with that being said... I will consider looking into your share of filmography that inspires you and I will get back with you about my thoughts.

A wonderful list of movies! If you ever are hungry for more horror, I recommend Á l'intérieur (2007). It's a very, VERY gruesome and tense French horror movie. You may have even seen it or hear of it because I believe it is a pretty famous one.
I know this is about films/series but I wanted to throw out a music question. Have you heard the new Feu! Chatterton album "Palais d'argile"? I'm American and a non-French speaker, but this album really wowed me. Really great performances and a long, creatively inspired album. They explore a lot of different genres from alt. rock to new wave to dance to electronic to disco. I've learned they also pull a lot from French alt. rock bands like Noir Désir. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Thank you for asking, I don't have a Letterboxd account. A few years ago I was on a similar french website (senscritique), but left it as I wasn't a fan of having to give a note to the films I watch. For example, to me Showgirls is both an 8/10 and a 3/10, some films can be both pretty bad and also amazing 😀 I feel better not being on the site anymore 🙂
