This particular trial was just one small part of a wider-ranging project to get fishermen to willingly adopt new conservation measures through social science.
Underwater observations were made on a beam trawl as part of the UK Governments's CEFAS initiative "Project Fifty Percent" (May 2011).

Fishing has got out of hand, I'm from a fishing town, and fished for many years. The small boats did little harm and supplied local people etc. Then I became a padi sport diver and have seen how delicate the sea bed really is and how sad it looks after any form of dragging is used. I prefer long lining as it's just a hook with bait, but even that can cause harm, lobster pots are constantly lost due to being poorly marked and they become a death trap as each thing that goes in dies so something else goes in to get it and dies... divers are asked to open them up to prevent it continuing. But we have a lot to answer for, we need to eat and fish is good but our methods need improving vastly before there's not a lot left.

Might reduce bycatch, but still destroys the seabed...

This is simply awful. The destruction left in its wake isn't even almost worth the fish on a plate.

Your video looks like you are plowing the seabed. Draggers are obviously doing a lot of damage to the seabed, even with the innovative bycatch reduction systems. Why don't you put some numbers to your 50% bycatch reduction claim. Are you reducing from 100,000 tons to 50,000 tons?
