How France's surprise election outcome poses new questions | DW Business

- The left-wing New Popular Front has won Sunday's election in France, despite an earlier vote indicating a strong showing for the country's extreme right. The back-and-forth has implications on the French economy and even relations within the European Union. But, could a "cohabitation" between the left-wing alliance and President Macron simply bring a political and economic stalemate? Or are both blocs going to be motivated to get something done in the years ahead.

Why is everyone worried that "the rich" leave the country? It's not like they can put their properties on a plane and leave with them. The means of productions stay in the country, the workforce, what really produces something of value. Their fortunes aren't circulating in the economy, it's not like they're spending it, and it will be taxed if it leaves the country anyway.
Unmovable property is a small amount of their wealth, they very much can simply move to another European country
beyond the fact that they can sell all those , most of their money is not physical
You don't seem to understand many things. The wealthy would get ready to move their assets, at least what is known as current account. Along with that, they take their productive apparatus somwhere else. The workforce on its own doesn't have either the experience or the capital to sustain on its own.
Read the history of Venezuela in the last 20 years.
You really have no clue about how assets work, do you?
It's patriotic to pay their fair share. I remember a bunch of millionaires wrote US congress telling them to tax them more.
Tax the rich!! Close the tax loopholes that companies use to minimise taxes!! Boom!!! 😂
French people and companies are already the most taxed in Europe
Tax revenues actually go down once you ask for taxes beyond a certain point
Popular front has really grown after the life of Brian.
Ok big nose
Marine Le Pen biography will say: "history only remembers those who came first place, not second or third..."
Remember, France got rid of a King and elected an Emperor. Don't be France, kids.
So don't elect the Far Right then.
They kept the “family friendly” fascist out. But now what.

@@jaaksavat7916 an utopia in the current world... LOL
@@_Historia_Magistra_Vitae really hope you're being ironic...
No, the rich cannot leave because they have already left in order to evade taxes, but their real wealth is in actual assets that they can't just move. They need French market as it is the one of the largest, and they need France in order to have a foot on Europe.
They can leave to another European country
Nobody’s going to stay in France if the tax rate is 90%
@@Agtsmirnoff Sure, but the French love speaking their own language, and they can't bring their assets with them. They would need to sell them or abandon them. If they do business elsewhere they'll be replaced.
The whole "rich will leave" myth is based on a capitalist myth of the rich being the only ones wifh the investment money, ideas and jobs. But these are just preexisting conditions they exploit.
The real problem will be the EU and IMF forcing France to play by neoliberal rules, but France is also the biggest military force and the second biggest market in the EU, so they have some leverage.
They can HQ in a different country after selling what they can, especially in a country that'll give citizenship if enough investment is done
@@johnnybrave7443 Sell to whom?
Another rich? Or to governement, under the price, or even better, lose it as it's taxable.
If a tax system is designed properly, they can headquarter wherever they want.
A hq in a country that sells citisenships is a great way to lose reputation.
I think it is amusing to say that this outcome was surprising. With a few minutes of exposure to French electoral history, a talented high school student could have predicted this outcome. No one making the prediction of a sweep by the RN backed that up with a constituency-by-constituency analysis of the effect of third place candidates dropping out.
Their plan is to make Germany and EU pay for their early retirement hahaha😅
When it turns right, you're concerned, when it goes left, you're concerned. How about just going south and be done with?
You do realise that extremism of either side is dangerous right?

I don't see them worried about the left, it's only the right that scares them, even centrists are considered far right nowdays
@@meerkats9317 But far left doesn't exists tho ?
Authoritarism on the left practically disappeared. Not even the so called "communists" advocating for overturning democracy in favor of dictatorial communism. None of them want to weaken or end democracy to ensure they stay in power. The right-wing does unfortunatly so I worry more about them.
I really liked the long interview. Please continue to not interrupt reporters or cut them off. one of the best reasons to watch dw
Good for France, tax increases and more immigration. What could go wrong?
Nobody talks about the deficit when it comes to spending on the military...
Because the military (i.e the defense of the nation) is actually the explicit and implicit duty of any government. It goes hand in hand. But the same cannot be said for social services. You want food? Buy it. You want a doctor? Pay him. You want nice housing? Rent or buy it. There is no objective reason why the government should make sure the people don’t go hungry. I know you probably desperately want it to be the other way.
Does the difference between a majority and a plurality not exist in Europe?
Math is universal. In french we speak of "majorité absolue" to describe a share of strictly more than 50% of the votes. Whereas "majorité relative" (plurality) describes a share of less than or equal to 50% of the vote that is the biggest unitary collection of the expressed votes. "Pluralité" means diversity or multitude in French, so "plurality" is a bit of a false friend.
In 10 years time, you will native French people embracing Islam, not because it's their fault, but younger people are simply going to be bred into that system.

That sounds like a brilliant idea
this alliance for or against the French people ?
Against, nothing french in this alliance!
Ridiculous
They just became a 2 party system
Then we all laugh at the Iranian’s sham “choices”
I don't get how one party of the left coalition is speaking as if they're going to be governing. what?
Yes, considering the only one 25% of the vote
Good luck with that
The bonds are being dumped
Leon Blum rises again
Is it an real life photo or jist Photoshop/AI?
Rip france
Surprise! We cheated you out of your choice
So the party with the most votes gets 3rd place? The party with 11% fewer votes gets the most seats? What could go wrong?
It's not a direct democracy.
Apparently not. What kind of kooks make up this leftist nonsense? Why on earth would the Center side with them?
So you agree with the newly elected left that the voting system should be changed to be made proportional? And when the RN with a third of the seats will still have no majority you’ll be happy?
@@pomperidus you think the leftist have any integrity? Of course they won’t.
@@pomperidusYou need to learn the difference between a majority and plurality. No one won a “majority” in the French election. Not even close. A majority = 50.01+%. Anything below that is called a plurality. Meaning, the highest number below 50%. The left won a plurality, but not a majority. The RN nearly doubled its seats from last time, and won the most votes. Its victory is only delayed. And the more immigrants arrive in France, and the less French France looks, the faster its victory will arrive.
At least we know that Germany will not be the target of business circles any more. So this is a good news right ?
France has become a joke 😅
Dw will blame modi 😂😂
And the downfall begins..
They're going to be so poor in a few years.
*"Tax The Rich!"* Ok watch them move across the border.
True.
Tax the rich. Would make the rich move out.
Open border, would make the poor immigrant come.
It would be double whammy.
This is path for the far right win in the next election.
if they move out they're gonna magically lose their revenues and investments?? do you realize how economics and the real world of capitalism works? apply some logic to your reasoning, just like criminals who don't want to pay taxes, they are sent to jail and somebody more responsible takes the lead of the company to assure it keeps going strong, the companies are simply just changing hands, if they don't wanna pay the taxes. there is a lot of responsible and capable people that can fullfill those roles for the state to benefit from, instead of the wealthy, they rich will allwayas get ate up either way, they will just lose a lot more than they win by getting out of france, if they wanna leave france, because france is a huge economy in itself. also, if the rich fall off, there will be way more competition from a 1000 other companies with better products than the elitist products...its just human nature, you gotta try to understand it better. the redistribution of the money to the middle and lower classes is what makes the economy grow exponentially stronger, thats why the leftists are apologists of money redistribution for those classes, because it creates more and better competition than giving it to the rich to just leech off.
they can piss off then.
I guess the rich were not the patriots they thought they were
So what?
Free everything to everyone! We will just take the rich money away! And they will totally agree and not run away leaving us in the economic ruin! 😂

Precisely because the far left is only one of the 4 parties of the coalition that includes moderates and soc-dems. There is no conspiracy the far left branch is regularly called far left by the media that precisely documented the rise of the extremes (plural) in France. It was a major topic to know if such an alliance could happen despite the ideological differences between the far left and the centre left and many feared the far-left side would afraid voters. If the rich leave, that's a bonus because they'll sell their assets which increases productivity.
If taxing the rich would be so easy, it would have been done before.
It really is easy, they have paid off elected officials to not do it.
The hardest part is getting in power. Most countries shift between conservative and liberal governments and both don’t try to tax the rich. The left hasn’t been in power and definitely not absolute power in the west before
By who? Macron? It never had been the plan with him, he comes from banking world and was supported by most of important businessmen.
Almost impossible unfortunately. The rich will always find loopholes to evade taxes

Putin is laughing and very happy.
Maybe, maybe not. Macron is the only western leader that wants a direct conflict with the Russians in Ukraine. He wants French troops in Ukraine despite pushback from the US and the UK. Putin's feelings probably wouldn't be hurt by the prospect of Macron bowing out from French leadership. That won't be happening anytime soon, now.
As long as France or even EU, is under the US Israel leadership and management, it's in good hands. Nothing to worry, just obey
Does Putin still have an internet connection?
