  • Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and resultant sanctions on President Putin's oligarch elite, a spotlight has been firmly cast on the British capital and its complicity as a store for dirty money. Now, the British government is seeking to salvage its reputation with a clampdown on corruption. But will it be successful? And just how will London fare without its fix of forbidden finance?

London property is literally a future-proof investment in case the rugs are pulled out from under them and they need to liquidate assets immediately. • @vice.nor.virtue
      @vice.nor.virtue ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah this report skimpt on a few details, but basically all of those houses or flats are owned by Oligarchs- people who got obscenely rich after being given heavy industry during the breakup of the soviet union. If you were lucky enough to be one of those people your networth started spiralling exponentially upwards overnight. Their problem is that their money is dirty and they need a place to store or launder INSANE amounts of it and London has long been a location to do just that because of the value of the city and the tax practises of territories we used to control.
      The British are undoubtedly giant hipocrites in these matters as you say. However as our atrocities have faded into history and trading became more honest in our country- you could say that we're highly specifically primed to identify when an individual person or company is trading their dirty money on our doorstep.

The Irish Kings invited in the Normans to settle internal disputes, from here the Kingdom of England and Ireland united. This moved on until Irish independence in the early 20th Century. During this time the reformation happened Europe wide and masses were slaughtered on both sides, Most of England and Southern Scotland became protestant whereas the Highlands of Scotland and Ireland remained catholic. From this schism the troubles arrived. It isn't comparable to say Stalin starving 5 million Ukrainians.....How's the price of Vodka?

    I’ve been working in luxury and fashion since about 2005 and I’ve just been wondering when this would happen. When people talk about rising rents and all this new luxury real estate - a lot of it is used to stash the money of the wealthy.
    It’s the same thing for Birkins. They just want an easy place to park their money. That’s why most of these places are empty 90% of the time

      Yes Yes! I'm actually happy about the rise of NFTs as it's another way for them to store money in something without having to snatch up all the real-estate square footage that our city desperately needs.

      Perhaps so, but London really has a greater case than those capital cities in other countries.
      Considering the way London is governed, it's more similar to the Vatican, BIS, or Washington DC, than it is to other capital cities like Paris or Moscow.

I suspect he is refering to the City of London (you know: that square mile between Chancery Lane, Holborn, Charterhouse, Middlesex Street, and the river Thames on the south side) which is a nothing but a corporation where the monarch HAS to ask for permission to enter from the Lord Mayor.
