      I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.
      IT'S LIKE THEIR GIVEN THIS BREED A BAD REPUTATION.
      EVERY DOG HAS SOMETHING THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY FIND
      NO PROBLEM WHERE AS OTHERS WOULDN'T LIKE.
      WHAT YOU DON'T DO IS START OUT A CONVERSATION ABOUT
      10 THINGS NOT TO ADOPT.
      THAT MAKES THAT DOG BREED
      VULNERABLE TO BEING ABUSED BY OTHERS.
      PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH WHAT THEY ARE SAYING.
      I LIKE THAT BREED. I WISHED I HAD ONE. IT WOULD BOTHER ME TO HAVE ONE.
      THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SMART DOGS.
      I.HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THAT BREED.
      GOD BLESS EVERY ONE THAT HAS ONE TO TAKE CARE OF.

    Old English Sheepdog is a modern name for them and were not bred for herding sheep but for droving cattle on the way to Smithfield Market in London. Their tails were removed at birth to keep them cleaner on the trail and were originally known as bobtail collies. They drove the cattle through the lanes of the day until the herd was settled for the night when they would go off across the fields and catch their food before returning to the herd. The double coat was in the breed to ward against the cold at night. I have kept them since my first in 1972 in the west of England. You will never find a more loyal and loving friend.

      The temperament of the other end of the leash should be considered BEFORE you make that sort of commitment. These people are complaining about training issues. That makes the owner the problem, not the dog.

    I loved my old English sheep dog when I lived in the country (40 years ago). I did call her Daisy after the movie "please don't eat the daisies" (which had a sheep dog in it). Registered name: 'Shagin' Wagin' Georgey Girl'. They really are a lot of work, but I loved that dog.

  • @echospaw899

    I just saw this & had to chuckle after watching you two, er, three. Everything you pointed out is spot on. Oft times when I am walking Echo, my 5y.o. OES, people will either ask me "what kind of dog is that?" (uhh), DUH! and then they will tell me how they'd "love to have one". Every single time I hear this, I start giving them a laundry list of every reason why 'that wouldn't be a good idea', in hopes of dissuading them from following through on that comment. I had a partner in early 2000's who just had to have a sheepdog. I remember thinking, "oh hell no", because I knew I'd be the one ultimately parenting him. And I did... I kept Wiley after we split up. Hey, I did the work. So, I loved & parented Wiley for 13 years. After that, and the pain of losing him, I eventually adopted Echo, who is with me right now until he's lived out his life. Fully spoiled, loved, protected, understood, and just a happy goofy boy. So glad you posted this... I would've said practically the same things. For those still interesteded... COMMIT. Commit before yourself. (Be willing to carry them up & down stairs & when they not able to walk any further in their old age. Sheepdogs are rather heavy. But I did.) Peace, : )

    I feel people in the comment are taking this video too seriously. They obviously love their dog very much and this video was obviously more meant as a love letter to him than any real advice for the public about OES. It's just a cute OES video, chill out!

I’ve seen people adopt dogs they can’t take care of and have to send them back to the shelter. You have to know both sides of an animal before you bring them into your family.

    best breed ever. I've had/been had by 3 during my life and I could never get another breed. I only had one that was very active and played frisbee 24/7. My third one was a couch potato and didn't want to get up until 9 and went to bed at 9. None of mine barked. I love that they are velcro dogs. I love how they attract so much attention when you take them out.I think they only have two drawbacks: expensive to buy and the grooming. they are big fluffy clowns and they make everyone smile .

    We are having ours put to sleep tomorrow, hardest decision ever. She is a rescue we adopted twelve years ago and has been my best friend since, but her pain is to much for the medicines now, and she is pretty much helpless. I can't imagine life without her. One thing that is much bigger than her size, is her personality and love. I can't imagine life without an OES, but soon will have to. I feel like I will spend the rest of my life in tears missing her. OES are the best.

      We are so so so very sorry you have to go thru this. It is one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. On one hand you want them to be around for ever and ever, but on the other hand you have to look at the quality of life they are living when nothing is helping them anymore. When we lost Farley it broke our heart so much but we knew he was in so much pain. The greatest thing is all the time that you did have with them! They were popular when I was a child in the 1970s. Now they're hardly ever seen. I think the fact that doodles are so popular and easy to come by also means that fewer people will go out of their way to buy an OES.
    Finally, if one loves HAIR - there really are better dogs out there - Poodle & PWD for example.

      I wanted an OES BADLY! but my family has allergies. Sheepadoodle was the compromise but they aren't easy to find either. They are quieter than the OES but they have the strong herding instinct that could make them a decent working dog that can run like a shepherd. Still, love that bear like shape and goofiness that the OES generally exhibits! This couple adores their OES and conversely - am envious but it makes me appreciate my doodle just that much more.

    Thank you.
    They are lovely dogs, but the information in the video is true. Sadly they usually only live to around 12 years old at the most. They can't take TOO much exercise either due to their weight. When young maybe a couple of hours a day.
    Remember if they get the runs then you have to clean a lot more fur, or even have their coat trimmed which is further cost.
    Usually very lovely with good temperaments.

    • @pey.wils9
      @pey.wils9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Please, DON'T shave them. Just cut their hair. They have double coats of fur, the first layer and take heat from the air and cool it down, kind of like a built-in air conditioner. When you shave them, you get rid of that. When you get rid of that, they get extremely hot. But, if you just trim it then they still will get cooled off

I am a professional dog groomer and still I shave mine down every 4 months as I live in Miami and more so, my 12 and 9 yr old girls are both incontinent. As for the personalities, all totally different. All great with kids and funny. The activity levels varied but none required daily walks. They can be stubborn and too will backup into your lap for back scratchies. As a groomer, I have come across a few unprovoked, aggressive Sheeodogs. They are protective, more so the females. The males are more silly/goofy. I do hope to own another one one day.

      They are pointing out the reasons why OTHERs who want an OES without making the commitment or knowing their needs react because they didn't do their homework first. They're more than 'just cute'. C'mon : )

      I believe it should be fine, especially if you are introducing him/her at a young age. We have had a cat the whole time we have had Wallace and they get along pretty good.

    We have a Great Pyrenees female, Heidi who is 128 lbs at 6 years. We are looking for another breed to match with her, and understand the problems of giant breeds. Are old English considered guardians? Pyrenees are guardians, and we live in Canada in the country where we have chickens and need a dog to watch for foxes, coyotes, bears, but not to attack but confront and lead them away from our flock. Would old English be good for this duty? Your pup is beautiful btw.

      @TenLairsDeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are herding dogs, so they like to keep everyone together. I have no experience with OES being a guardian type dog - but do know they get along with everyone & they are great with our chickens and other animals!

I paid the bleeder in YOKOHAMA and they transported her by air. we never have any regret .

      @@TenLairsDeep Thank you for replying. One question, if you don't mind... You show Reasons "NOT" to get an Old English Sheepdog. But I feel you love O.E.S.D. I'm curious to know why you show "reason not to get ", but "reason to get" even though you love O.E.S.D.

    • @TenLairsDeep
      @TenLairsDeep  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We absolutely love OES and I think we will have one the rest of our lives. They are a handful and take a lot of responsibility especially when you have them in a long coat. So we are just highlighting the fact that they are not for everyone. There not the type of breed that you can leave at home day after day while you are at work or away from your home. They need a lot of attention and exercise. But on the other hand there are so many reasons to get an OES because they are the best!! So to answer your question we thought we would make a video of both why to and why not to for everyone on both sides of the fence, if that makes sense?

      Cronk, King of Monsters! I shaved my sheepdog Molson for the last 4 years about 3-4 times a year. This saved me a ton of money (about 125$ per shave) and I should have been doing from the beginning. I would recommend it but it will take you about 4 hours to complete
