Hey guys!
In this tutorial I show you how to created this chiseled text effect in Adobe Illustrator. I tried to keep the tutorial as short as I could, but there is just a lot that goes into successfully creating this style, however, if any of you know of any better ways to do this, please feel free to post it in the comments and I will pin it! Once you have all of the shapes made, thats when you can start to experiment with different colours, so you could go for something like what I used in the video, just random colours, or you could use different shades of the same colour, as shown in the thumbnail and start of the video. Alternatively, you could start to experiment with gradients (which does look good, i've tried it) but for this tutorial I wanted to focus on getting the style down. Anyway, I hope this tutorial has helped you guys learn a thing or two that you didn't already know, thats always the goal with these videos. Ste, I love your tutorials! One thing, I couldn't get the blend to work on a letter like "P" so as an alternative to that, I did a negative offset path to get a single line. I was curious if you did something similar in the DOPE example.

I really love this tutorial but for some reason when i try to color in the pieces i cant get rid of the stroke around it..when i turn of stroke/color it has this white spaces and the pieces dont lock into eachother like yours..can u help me out?

When I try to join the lines the center line I created acts crazy and it's really annoying. So I figured out another way to do it and I love the Pen Tool.

That technique with the blend tool does not work for me. Tried even with the font that you present but still it does not do anything. In fact, as soon as I add a stroke, expand the letter and unite, the end result looks nothing like yours. The vectors do not stand inside as shown as in the video but outline the new (bold) version of the letter.
Anyway, I tried with just 1 pt stroke, cut up the letter as shown, applied the blend tool with steps specified by 1 and no result occurs. :/
Pretty late reply but once you have cut the paths, right click and select release compound path. The blend should work fine then.

I am still facing problems with the circle intersection part. I have even tried to intersect them using direct selection too but still shape builder tool covers the whole shape? Any elaboration on this step?

Incase you still didn’t get the answer to this. Maybe theres still a gap between those lines. Hit CTRL Y so you can see just outlines and check if theres no gap in lines.

I added that later in Photoshop. Simply go to 'Filter' at the top of the screen, then go down to 'Noise'. Hope that helps! Alternatively, you could add the noise/grain in illustrator by going to 'Effect' at the top of the screen, going down to 'Texture', then select 'Grain' and from there you can play with the settings. Hope this helps man!

Hey man I‘ve been following you for a long time and now I‘m finally working with illustrator! The only problem I got was I didnt get these smart thingys to position the semi circles so I couldnt place them correctly which led to them not being individual shapes so I couldnt finish the piece... can you help me on how I turn these smart ankers or whatever they are called on? Hey man! Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with this. I’m currently at work so I’m not in front of my computer, but to turn on smart guides, I think you go to ‘view’ or ‘window’ at the top of the screen, and ‘smart guides’ should be listed in one of those. If you can’t find smart guides anywhere, it may well be that you don’t have a new enough version of illustrator to have them. I’m not sure which update/version smart guides were implemented, but I’m sure a quick google search will clear that up for you! If you can’t find them and done have the right version, you could just line the shapes up with the anchor points rather than the guide. The guide is only really there to help, it’s not necessary, so it can be done without it. Anyway, hope this helps man, and if you’re still unable to do it just let me know and I’ll see how I can help. Take it easy!

Help! Each time I try to create the center line (4:18) I get a bunch of wavy lines, instead of just one single line. What am I doing wrong?
Hey! I had that too, like a little blip in the center line, im sure theres a better, more precise way to fix it but I found that if you use the direct selection tool (A) then by moving the anchor points parallel to the little blip around then it will straighten out!

that's easier and quicker in photoshop directly

2. filter > add noise to your liking
3. set layer blending mode to overlay

The pathfinder is under the Window menu, but the shortcut key is shift+command+F9. At 03:04 though he's doing a Paste in Front which is command+F/ctrl+F. You can alternatively get there from the Edit menu.
