CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hal (Jack Black) tries to get to know Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow) but experiences a series of awkward moments because he only sees the inner Rosemary.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jack Black continues his march to stardom with this typical Farrelly brothers blend of broad comedy and a heartfelt message. Black is Hal Larsen, a shallow man rapidly approaching middle age whose superficiality can be attributed to his father's deathbed admonition to only date young, beautiful women. Hal and his best friend, Mauricio (Jason Alexander), have taken the advice to heart, but Hal finds all of his physically impressive girlfriends consistently lacking in other qualities that would make them ideal mates. When he bumps into self-help guru Tony Robbins (playing himself), the motivational entrepreneur is intrigued by Hal's predicament and hypnotizes him so that he'll only see the inner beauty of women. Hal is quickly smitten with Rosemary Shanahan (Gwyneth Paltrow), a blonde Peace Corps volunteer who's tenderhearted, funny, and intelligent. She is also gorgeous and meets Hal's basic criteria of outer perfection, but what he doesn't realize is that Robbins' spell is working and he cannot see that Rosemary actually weights 300 pounds. When Mauricio is finally able to snap Hal out of his charmed state, Hal's in love with the inwardly perfect woman and must overcome his obsession with beauty. The script for Shallow Hal (2001) was developed when Peter Farrelly enjoyed the humorous letters written to a mutual friend by Sean Moynihan, a computer software executive who followed the filmmaker's advice to take up screenwriting.

That should have been his first clue that something didn't seem right. The weight of a 110-115 lb person wouldn't cause a chair to collapse like that unless it was already damaged.
I dormed with this one girl in college who said her boyfriend used to work at a restaurant called del taco. A lady came in and asked if they served tacos. He confirmed the name of the place yes this is del TACO. and the lady got mad. Well.... another time i feared for humanity....think people. Try it. It doesn't hurt!

Shallow Hal is one of my top ten underrated movies ever and it’s got such a great message about inner beauty and appreciation
this movie feels like a big joke against fat ugly people but it’s hilarious regardless
The main character sees the inside beauty. But he doesnt know that. He sees the inside as the outside and values people on the outside.
Yeah it always felt like it undermined it’s own premise. He still technically fell for physical beauty, even though it was fictitious.
He loves what he sees, and that defeats the point of the film. A Hollywood film with a message lol well they tried

She was pretty much at her peak here, having finally lost the baby fat on her cheeks but still having the young skin and had not yet gone too far with her weight (thin, but not too thin).

Rewatching the movie I noticed the way she walked throughout the film was one of an overweight woman. Gwen payed attention to details or maybe combination with the director.
This movie is so cute, I don’t think it fat shames people. But, it more teaches that you should love someone for their inner beauty.

This is one of the most perfect comedies. Big on the laughs and even bigger on the heart while still having a great message. Love this movie.

C'mon people, I see in the comments that either many people dont get it or you just never watched the whole movie. This is one of my favorite all time movies. Have you ever noticed how once you get to know someone you can never see them the same as looking at a photograph of someone for the first time? If people are rude and mean your eyes never see them again as beautiful. When people ate kind and loving they just get more beautiful in your eyes. That is what love is blind to. You get blind to surface aesthetic once you feel a person's heart. That is why the saying " beaity is in the eye of the beholder". The way you view someone is held in your own eye( mind, thought, feeling ). Your point of view is held inside you and has feeling connected to it. When she said altrudocious she was letting him off the hook by making up another "not really a word" that was similar because she is smart, witty, has a sense of humor and is kind. This is a movie you can watch over and over and practice playing with your mind to see how we judge so often and dont let the inner beauty of a person direct our seeing. Watch the Tony Robbins elevator scene( one of my favorite all time scenes) and see if you can spend a day observing people from your heart\ feeling instead of surface judgement based on programmed comparative beauty standards.

Tia Turnbull, that is very true with how many people are. You described it very well, I couldn't have thought of as good of a way to describe this.
Unfortunately, there are some very shallow ones who just make up their minds from the first time seeing a less attractive person's face that they'll never warm up to them no matter how great of a person they turn out to be. The majority of those types are usually younger 20-somethings and college age, sometimes older people too who just never out grew their ways.
But the higher percentage of people in the world are like you described it, Tia Turnbull, it does depend on how that person turns out to be whether you alter how you see and treat them or not.

wish they would make a Sequel- really a Reboot. The Reboot would be called Shallow Helen in which the Gender Roles are reversedl Helen is a Narcisstic, Self-CEntgered Woman who only goes out with Hunky Men and then complains when they treat her badly and eventaully dump her and move on to their Next Conquest. She is hynoptized by Tony Robbins into seeing only the Inner Beauty of Men. She ends up dating a Fat Guy. I think it might be an interesting Movie. And Yes, I am an Overweight Male. Looks Matter for Men just as well, if not more than Women.

The amount of detail in this movie. At 0:58 you hear creaking which indictees the chair about to collapse underneath the weight of the girl that you can’t see. You also see Hal warning her about her back when she gets up from the chair but we know that it’s because she’s obese - which obviously he can’t see. This movie truly has 1st class continuity executives
Also notice the waiter didn’t even look at Rosemary when he came to take their order. He looked at Hal, and only in Rosemary’s direction when Hal let her go first. I’ll bet that was planned/scripted too.
You’re reading too much into it. It was a trend in the late 90’s/early 2000’s that a server at places like Chili’s or Outback Steakhouse would sit in your booth or pull up a chair to take your order.
It was meant to send “laid back/friendly” vibes. But many customers began complaining about it and restaurants began banning the practice because it often invaded peoples personal space and generally made customers feel uncomfortable, which is why you almost never see it anymore.
But I can attest that it happened a lot during this period.

I LOVE THE MEANING BEHIND THIS MOVIE. TRUE BEAUTY IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE ON THE INSIDE NOT THE OUTSIDE.
That is how some people see things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, young people still don't always look at it that way. Look at the earlier scene with the way those young women keep dissing Jack Black and Jason Alexander at the nightclub just because of their looks. They weren't thinking "beauty's in the eye of beholder", they just saw two less attractive guys and acted according to that and nothing else.

The laws of physics aren't really violated here, because Gwyneth's actual appearance isn't somehow mysteriously changed. It's all in Jack's mind, which is just his brain messing with his vision, just like any other hallucinatory symptoms a person may develope through medication, drugs, hypnosis, etc.
This is why I always sit in booths; more of a struggle to get in and out but not as embarrassing as a chair breaking. Relatable Big Girl problems Rosemary.

The beauty of Gwyneth is unreal
Is this the film where he meets the hospital children and is so happy with them? Then after the spell or hypnosis is removed he goes back and doesn't recognize one of the kids because he's a burn victim? And that's when Hal realises he saw the beauty of the children as their character and not of their skin. It was a real aw moment too when you judge even kids by their aesthetic beauty, showing what a vain world we've been conditioned into

I actually have a friend who eats fast food and anything he wants all the time and is the skinniest man I've ever seen. I am not fat but by his side I feel big. My mother is kinda like that too, she doesnt gain weight easily. So these people do exist! Dunno about the other way, but I do believe anyone can loose weight with a diet and exercise.
