Love the concept on this video. I think scissors are a very overlooked tool and furthermore people often put too much emphasis on the knife blade when evaluating a multi-tool. I don't think the blade is very important for a few reasons. First, most people who are into gear and tools probably have a folding knife that will work better no matter what. Second, I prefer small multi-tools and when the blade is so small you might as well use the scissors. Finally, scissors are often a more appropriate or effective tool for day-to-day cutting tasks. I work as a paramedic so you might think I use my knife blade fairly often. But I've only used my knife only once on the job and I rarely used it off the job. My trauma sheers or the snips on my multi-tool handle nearly all my cutting tasks.
I carry the style CS specifically for the scissors and than a full sized multitool for everything else. I use the scissors on the style CS to cut through nylon webbing, fabric and a whole host of other things. Like my fingernails on the way to something fancy when I forgot to trim them.
You might want to check out the Gerber Legend 800. They have Fiskar scissors and it is able to do some things that Leatherman can. I own both Letherman and Gerber multitools and both work very well.
I've had a low end Gerber for almost ten years, and a SOG for a little over a year. I purchased a Leatherman Rebar a week or so to give as a Christmas gift, and I've been so impressed I just ordered a Charge for myself. I'm glad to see how the scissors do, since they're one of the tools I'll use the most. Thanks for a great review!
In my experience, and I've used both, the Micra and the Style scissors may be close in size, but they do not cut the same. For me, carry and effectiveness both matter. My favorite Leatherman is the Super Tool 300, which does not have scissors, but the case my Super tool came with has a small pocket in front that holds a Micra perfectly. The Micra is so light that the extra weight isn't even noticeable, I don't need scissors every day, but when I do need them, I need good ones. This means a scissor based tool. For the things I cut, the Micra cuts much better that the Style, or any other scissors I've tried, and is also easier to carry.
I heard pre 2004 Wave's had folding scissors (folds even more than scissors shown here). which had longer blades. I wonder if you have any experience with those.
One item I think is worth mentioning, you test the Squirt scissors claiming they're similar to the Micra. The Micra has those little lockup tangs that keep the tool rigid when closed, and those dig into your hand a little. Again, just think it's worth mentioning, the micra does have GREAT scissors.
I thought that I was the only person choosing a muti-tool for it's scissors. I have carried a Micra for years just to have the scissors. I think the Leatherman Style CS is going to be my new small multi-tool. Which of the larger Leatherman tools do you recommend? Thanks,a great video.
Great video! I felt overall the Juice seemed to be the most well rounded for every task for it's weight to size rattio. It only failed really on the Leather belt but how dull was it compared to the other tools? I would have probably opted for knife blade on both belts if I were tackling a belt. Just my 2 cents and thank you for posting the video very helpfuln deciding my next purchase!
Not a leatherman, but did you ever test (or use) the scissors on a Wenger Ranger 71 (Gardener Ranger that is)? I'm thinking of buying that one because it has the excellent Wenger sawblade too. I have a Leatherman skeletool CX on me all the time, that Wenger gardener would complement it perfectly. Those scissors do look like the best around on any multitool-knife...
I think the cool thing about the Style CS, is that its a designated scissors. On the other hand, its a designated scissors where as the SURGE seems to be almost as good as the Leatherman scissors, and also has pliers. For me its a trade off, but I'd probably buy the best multi tool for me, and then buy a Style CS (or just a designated multi tool scissors) Thanks for the video, helped a lot! I'm looking to get a MT for when I ride my motorcycle and for work.
RCFlyBoy314 He doesn't have a micra here - the micra is a keychain multitool with the main tool being a pair of scissors. I've heard a lot of bad things about the CS's scissors - the spring/torsion bar breaks easily.
today i've bought my first leatherman. its the style cs and what i'm seeing from this video, i did quite a good choice :) i'm going to use it mainly for cutting thin packaging plastic, carton and mostly paper.
I'm thinking of getting a Leatherman Wingman. Can anyone comment on the quality of the scissors and how long the little spring to keep them open lasts (that thin strip of steel that keeps the blades of the scissors apart)? I always feel like that steel will just get weak over time and the scissors won't open up without you having to physically pull open the handles.... :/
The fairly well made scissors is one of the BIG reasons I went with the Juice S2, but they SURE would benefit from the "folded over" style handle the Charge has. Great review Scout.....one of the best!
I absolutely agree with you when it comes to some jobs it is safer, less mess, and just easier to use scissors. But even with the best scissors, unless they are specifically designed to cut tuff stuff, I have a pair which are along the lines of tin snips so a small scissor but beefy and lots of pressure. The tips of any scissor are unlikely to cut anything but good paper and cloth in a single t
Wow. That looked painful with the smaller handle scissors. I can almost feel the pain on the thumb. I have the Surge and always wonder how well the scissors on the Surge handled vs to the other Leatherman multitools. After watching this video I am glad I got the Surge rather than Charge. The Style CS looks like a wonderful key chain multitool with an awesome scissor. I am going to have to checkout the Style CS.
Interesting and informative post. Limits of practically definitively reached. Seems that none of the scissors satisfy every possible need, so the task becomes choosing the multi-tool based on how well the remaining tool set satisfies most of your daily need.
hickness. As an example, I have a pair of the best Tailor scissors designed for cutting coat materials and even they come up against some things they can't cut on the tip. As you were doing, the technique is to feed in the stuff you want to cut and make more smaller cuts near the fulcrum to give full benefit. A recent item I found just sailed through was scissors on fish. They worked great and cut the time down for prep to maybe a quarter. Good test on your part. Take care. mrbluenun
I've never had luck with the Leatherman scissors from the style ps, the spring has broken on me three times and I'll send it into Leatherman and they'll fix it but then a week later the spring is broken again. don't know about they're other scissors though.
Excellent video... love to see people doing actual work with these tools. It gives me something to think about. Get "a fresh thumb" and do some more! LOL!
Most of these scissors look similar in size. Could the actual difference in cutting ability be attributed to the grind angles of the scissor blades? Perhaps the ones that cut better had steeper grind angles.
Leatherman (also Victorinox for that matter), should make Swiza type scissors tools. Swiza came up with full length scissor blades for their pocket folding knife. I think if locking mechanism and folding lever is added, it could be very useful scissors.
You should have sharpened them all before. I mean I've cut leather with my juice, perhaps you've used the juice scissors a lot? So they were somewhat dull in the test?
Style CS is the better scissor because it has full handles, rather than just a thumb handle. But if you want a tool that has pliers and scissors, you have to go with the thumb style.
The Style CS/Micra scissors are very good, but do beware - once they get dull they're nearly impossible to sharpen because they don't open wide enough. Leatherman won't even sharpen them.
Can you make a comparison video of multitools vs. real tools? For example, multitool pliers vs various real pliers, multitool blades vs real folders, multitool screwdrivers vs real, standard-size screwdrivers, etc. That would be interesting to watch.
I have used my Leatherman Charge AL for about 6 years and i find the scissors awesome for trimming nails, it's about the only thing i have used them for. However they are not that good on toenails, but they can get the job done.
Excellent vid.. I'm deciding on my next Leatherman purchase, and the scissors are very important to me. This is exactly what I needed to know. Instant subscriber!
Comparing is good, but scissors isn't universal tool. For example, small scissors of Wave is for nails, strings, paper and of course not for blisters or belts!
+nigol1472 For nail trimming i recommend style CS because it has really good nail file and handle shape is also good for it, but for the scissors these aren't great as scissors made by fiskars. I bought style cs for my gym bag just for nail trimming.
***** Victorinox Swisscard classic has really good scissors and file is good as the leatherman has, but if you want something that you can take for air travel, then leatherman style ps is better option.
I was considering purchasing a pair of Surge S2s specifically for the scissors. I'm glad I found this video first. Also, the Surge scissors can also be had on the Wingman model for the budget-minded individual.
i like the scissors because i'm a stoner, and you never know when you're gunna need to roll up a joint or a blunt out in the woods. pretty much only reason i want them on a multi tool
@TheStig000 They will not. I've already asked - the best they do is send you to a sewing shop to get them sharpened. Depending on how dull they are, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
In my experience the victorinox 91mm scissors are the best. There not as comfortable and as strong as the style cs but they make more precise cuts especially on cord and the like.
the yard stick to measure Scissors is to cut fishing braided line. most Scissors will failed. braided fishing line is thinner that normal tailor string.
to me this seems to demonstrate dull vs sharp scissors more than the real differences between them. i have the surge, wingman, micra, blast, and original wave. they really do not cut much different. not nearly as different as this video indicates.
A little apples vs oranges, because the style is really a glorified pair of scissors, and not really in any way similar to the others. Toss them out as the aberration, and the Surge scissors win, hands-down.
So upset you left out the micra because every other video just TALKS about how much worse they cut than the style cs, and now the Style is discontinued not the micra!!! I was hoping to finally see a video (there’s 1, maybe 2 currently) that display them competitively and actually show cutting.
Need Raptor to rule the whole cutting part. :)
Love the concept on this video. I think scissors are a very overlooked tool and furthermore people often put too much emphasis on the knife blade when evaluating a multi-tool. +Josh W Well said. That's how I see it.
What about the wingman?
I've always loved scissors on multi-tools. There's so much variety out there!
I carry the style CS specifically for the scissors and than a full sized multitool for everything else. I use the scissors on the style CS to cut through nylon webbing, fabric and a whole host of other things. Like my fingernails on the way to something fancy when I forgot to trim them.
Connor Smith I use them to cut my nails too, they really work!
Wingmans scissors are different then all of these but wasn't in the battle
You might want to check out the Gerber Legend 800. They have Fiskar scissors and it is able to do some things that Leatherman can. I own both Letherman and Gerber multitools and both work very well.

the Style is slimmer. it may fit better in the case pocket
How do the scissors do on nails?
I heard pre 2004 Wave's had folding scissors (folds even more than scissors shown here).
which had longer blades.
I wonder if you have any experience with those.
Would scissors with a screw where the blades meet to tighten them be a good idea? Don't those scissors get wobbly with time?
As of 2021 the Juice line is gone along with the Style & CS and my first ever leatherman tool the Squirt S4 is gone (wish they brought it back)
Awesome video. I think I'll keep the Surge at the top of my list now that I've seen this video.
After watching the entire video, I have to conclude that I am a complete dork.
Glade to see the charge scissors do so well, and what ever it doesn't do to we'll on it has the hook blade on the sheepskin foot knife

In some settings, it's more appropriate to pull out a multi-tool scissors, not a pocket knife or a dedicated blade.

what weave is your survival bracelet?! that thing is a beast!
How about Style PS? They look dinky but are they useful?
I think the cool thing about the Style CS, is that its a designated scissors. On the other hand, its a designated scissors where as the SURGE seems to be almost as good as the Leatherman scissors, and also has pliers.

Hmm, hadnt heard that they break easily. My Style CS has been doing great so far! (8 months? 10? not sure) Haven't even lost my tweezers yet! LOL
Are you sure you're not talking about the Style PS scissors?
I have a new gen juice s2 and was really Surprised on big the scissors were!
today i've bought my first leatherman. its the style cs and what i'm seeing from this video, i did quite a good choice :) i'm going to use it mainly for cutting thin packaging plastic, carton and mostly paper.

I wish for a flush wire cutter multi tool
How did you get paracord through the lanyard hole of the Juice S2?!
Great video!

Any chance for a 2017 update on this vid?
Need a multi with good sissors
you should use the style cs like pliars

that was amazing. Thank you so much. this was so fun to watch and is the perfect type of comparison I wanted to see. Please do tweezers next!!
would you recommend the surge or the wave overall for a multitool?
@jekostas Will they replace them? I know their warranty is great but would it cover dull scissors?
What e juice do you use with your vape 2? Jk just bought the micra and its great
Leatherman (also Victorinox for that matter), should make Swiza type scissors tools.
Swiza came up with full length scissor blades for their pocket folding knife.

Good vid, thanks for the comparison. You know, you were using the Style CS scissors upside down the entire time.
Nice review, alot of info. Never cut with Leatherman scisors, do not have one with them. Thanks, take care and have a great day.
toss the leatherman raptor in there and rip everything to shreds real quick.
another great review by the late girl scout.
The surge surprised the Hell outta me when you cut through the leather belt. But those scissors look really small and wimpy.
I think you mean the Charge, and yes, I was blown away by that too! I'mlad the Surge style works well seeing as I just got a Wingman for them
You should have sharpened them all before. I mean I've cut leather with my juice, perhaps you've used the juice scissors a lot? So they were somewhat dull in the test?
thanks for the vid, scissors are a big part of my edc so a very helpful video
Cool vid. I wouldn't mind watching comparison vids of other tools on leathermans
Love the video. Two points I want to make.
1. you can make up all the words you want your video HAHA.
2. The Style CS would go good in a med kit.
at 1st i thought that blister packaging was RC body scrap. I think i would rather have a secondary scissors because i use the pliers more myself.
Style CS is the better scissor because it has full handles, rather than just a thumb handle. But if you want a tool that has pliers and scissors, you have to go with the thumb style.
Great Video. I wish Leatherman didn't retire the Squirt PS4.
The scissors in the Wingman model are different and not included in the compared.
@15.05... brainwave!.. hahaha you reckon mate? I'd been shouting this at the screen for 15 minutes!
Ive clipped fingernails with my Juice CS4 scissors. I dont find them uncomfortable at all.
The Style CS/Micra scissors are very good, but do beware - once they get dull they're nearly impossible to sharpen because they don't open wide enough. Leatherman won't even sharpen them.

@jekostas Ah, good to know. Just gotta pick up a sharpener that will do scissors I guess.
Well done my friend!
nice video. but now that the wingman has come out, and it has pretty unique scissors, maybe you should include it on this video too
You need to check out Leathermans Raptor!
Excellent vid.. I'm deciding on my next Leatherman purchase, and the scissors are very important to me. This is exactly what I needed to know.

Conquer them all with east with the Leatherman Raptor!

Thanks for the review mate. You need a beer or three after that. Well done!!
are any of these good for trimming your nails?
+nigol1472 Pretty much all of them can work for that.

Not really surprising, except for the Style CS, where the scissors are the main tool, you pretty much get what you pay for.

i loved your video...but seriously man...are you in love with your hands? !
For a beginner I appreciate this review! Great job
Thanks
How do you rate the Wingman's scissors compared to the ones in this vid?
i have a wave and a wingman the scissors are basically exactly the same and very good!
Thanks Max.
Great video! Very informative and useful!
Aside from it being a multitool, I want to be able to trim my stash at any bathroom.
to me this seems to demonstrate dull vs sharp scissors more than the real differences between them. i have the surge, wingman, micra, blast, and original wave. they really do not cut much different. not nearly as different as this video indicates.
great review
Большое спасибо за тест. Очень содержательно.
great, thanks
EXACTLY what I was after, Except ZIP TIES :'( thanks for this :D
that's a good one because sometimes the zip tie is in a spot that you don't want to use a knife because you might cut too much
thanks so match!!
18:14 to 18:16 did that peice of material just move
The surge is insane. The surge wins
Not sure why you really need scissors when your away from the house.Seems like a knife or wire cutters would cut most of what you would come across.
Gorando multitool...best scissors of them all
my charge can cut through parachord fine
Great vid
my micra scissors were damaged cutting a cable tie. gutted.
Thefirst minute or sois like somebody trying to do a magic trick with his hands and it doesn;t work hahaha lol :D Great video anyway :D
