  • Today Jim is quizzing Brenda & William on which horse is the off horse and which horse is the nigh horse. Then, William spreads a load of manure while Jim videos with the drone!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Nice to Jim enjoying a bit of filming now that he has a helper who can drive the horses and he does not have to concentrate so fully on the handling/driving. Lovely video, always enjoy the drone. Hated to see that manure go over the beautiful white snow, but alas that is life on the farm and manure is like GOLD when it comes to the farm. Please let William know that us viewers appreciate all his efforts on the farm and how he helps you, what a gem.

Jim, you will be happy to hear that, as a child who grew up with ponies and horses, I was taught the side we always go to for leading, the horse's left side, was "the near side" and the horse's right side was "the off side". I was 5 when our farrier taught me that. 😊

Same with a boat or ship. If you are on the ship and looking forward, (bow) the Left side is port, right side is starboard . Turn and face the rear, (Stern) and the are still port and starboard. The reference point is base on the ship moving forward.

I remember my grandfather telling it like this. When meeting an on coming team on the road the near horse is the one closest to you. The nigh horse is the next horse over. He also said the lighter colored horse should be on the left. That was because the ligter colored horse would show up better in the dark of night. He also said to have the larger horse on the right as with many farm emplements, the right side would be the center of the load and was a little harder to pull. Not necessarily true with a wagon but would be with the hay mower, plow and corn binder etc. Don't know where Grampa got that from. Its just that as I watched your video that popped up in my head and I thought I'd share it with you. Thank you for the enjoyment I have watching them.

Wew, you stimulated some chit chat on this one Jim, 😅 sometimes I stay away from it but I kind of mixed in the swirl this time, lots of comments on neigh, and off horse. I am glad you straightened William out on his gees and Haas, boy if I did that to Frankie, the farmer I worked for in highschool, he would never let me hear the end of it, ah ha, he was a tough Farmer , smart , cool, hard worker!, with a great sense of humor, but if you got off track, he'd take care of that quick, no nonsense guy, and I liked working for him, good Man, tough guy.

My understanding is that near or nigh (nigh in Dutch is roughly close or near) side started with soldiers carrying swords. The swords were carried on their left to make an easy draw with their right hand. So they mounted from the left so as to not have to drag the sword across the horse. It was also easier to do anything with the horse from the left walking around with a sword. The right hand side of a horse became known as the "off" side. These terms have come down for hundreds of years and carry into teams of horses as well as riding horses and like most horse terms as still used today.
One step further is that, as I am sure Jim knows, when you have 6 or 8 horse hitches each team in the hitch has a specific name. For instance an 8 horse hitch - the team nearest the wagon is the "wheel horses", the next team is the "swing team", the next team is the "point team", and the front team is the "lead team". The wheel horses are usually the biggest and strongest team as they do the most work, and the lead team needs to be a bold, forward going team.
Love your videos - always enjoyable to watch, bring back lots of memories. Thanks!!

Growing up with saddle horses , we led them on their left and mounted on their left. That made it the "near" (to you) side, their other side was then the "off" side (or over there). If you think of it that way it helps.

    • @suzanneyoung8011
      @suzanneyoung8011 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yes, that helps. I've heard these terms before and didn't understand what they mean as in "off side foot". It makes sense now. Seems near would be easier to remember than nigh.

The port side of a boat is the left side. The drivers side of American cars is always the left side. So even if you are standing in the front the port and drivers sides don't change. It all made sense to me.

Yep, you beat me to it, starboard and port, bow and stern, same concept with a boat or ship. Sometimes I say 'on the driver's side' when working on a motorcycle or 4 wheeler and my friends just laugh. Jokingly. I being left handed like my Dad, I am a "south paw". of 12 in family Mom, Dad and 10 kids, I am the only southpaw like Dad. (1st base)

When I used to pick corn with a team of horse's. WE picked corn right handed, so we were on the left side of the wagon. We called the horse next to us the (near horse). When driving down the highway the (near horse) was next to traffic, It puts the (near horse) on the left side of the tongue, when driving the team. The (off horse) was on the right side of the tongue when driving the team. Back in the early 40's all the neighbors picked corn by hand. Ron Stoddard from Nebraska.

I'm old and grew up with old folks. My Uncle Aus was born in 1877. One of my first jobs on the farm was riding the dump rake when we still got in hay loose. Uncle Aus drove a 1924 Willis Overland he had cut down to a tractor to pull the rake. I was 7 or 8 and he was 80. (not OSHA approved) Anyway, when driving oxen, everyone drove from the left side, goad in the right hand. The nigh ox needed to be a little smarter because he was near the butt of the goad and needed to do what you wanted by paying attention to you. The off ox was at the tip of the goad and usually needed to be touched up to do what was required. Thus the old saying, 'Number than Joe's off ox".

@@johnkomosa9508 He was my great grandmother's younger brother. He married my grandfathers sister. They had no children and my Dad was a surrogate son. Pa ended up being the heir to the farm. I couldn't operate the dump rake with the lever but could operate the peddle dump. I quickly learned to line up the windrows. My Uncle still wanted the hay to be cocked up at night and spread in the morning. So , later in the day we went back out to cock it up with the rake. He had a rope rigged on the peddle dump but wanted to teach me what to do, so I operated it. The homemade tractor that he called "The Puddle Jumper" had a truck transmission and rear end directly behind the Overland transmission. With both transmissions in reverse it barely crawled ahead. By the way his older brother (born 1862) retired back to the farm after his wife died. He died when I was little. i can remember him catching me by hooking me with his cane. He was a contractor and died on the job at his last house when in his nineties.

Learning every day keeps the brain sharp; thanks for the lesson. I am dyslectic so right and left can still defeat me if I'm in a rush. Now I have new terms, off and nigh. Just have to remember to be standing behind the horses and the old saying "right on" but instead of "on" turn it "off". Little tricks like this keep my world in the right direction, or off direction, LOL.

Jim, really enjoy the drone but that's close enough to flying manure!! Does bring back memories regarding cold weather, when the load was all but discharged I'd shut off beater and allow the drag chain to operate longer to insure there was not material left to freeze the chain down. Appreciate your teaching of "terms" but I got lost! One of the nice things about tractors to identify sides, always sit on the seat and everything was either on your left or on your right! Enjoy your videos, I came along at the end of the horse era and I continue to be amazed at what they can do with the right person in control and you are certainly one of those "right" persons to be in control! The logging is unreal but great! Thanks for all the videos!

Just to simplify all that, when you are getting on a horse, you always mount on the left side. The left side is the side nearest you, hence that being the near or nigh horse. I would imagine it probably came from post horses or jerk line horses, where you were actually riding the nigh horse, and never riding the off horse. To see what I mean, check out Zac Odom working four mules in a jerk line hitch, while riding the near side wheeler. The reason for wanting to use those terms is when two people are working together, you can quickly designate which horse you mean by nigh or off side, and in an emergency when seconds count, that might save a life. Think about when Jim had the pile up pulling the tractor out, and had to unharness horses and get them apart and get Lady out. Yes, he was working alone that day. Say Brenda and William had both been there and helping get them unharnessed and on their feet. You've got two pretty identical horses there, and unless you knew them well, designating that Brenda should steady Bill and William should unharness his traces might get confusing, but you can just say, "Hey Brenda, grab the off horse and steady him, and William, unhook the off traces." If everyone knows the terminology, there is no confusion over who should do what, and it might save a horse's life. Just watch the video of the Budweiser Clydesdales doing the docking maneuver. They had a bad pile up and a bunch of horses fell. Those grooms were so well versed in what to do, and who was responsible for which horse that they had them unharnessed very quickly. Also, when you are working horses in tandem, your front team are the leaders, and the back team are the wheelers. If you have teams in between, they are swing teams.

Same thing no matter where you are on a vehicle..
Passenger side of a vehicle is on the right. Drivers side is always on the left. No matter if you are upside down. 😄
& yes vehicles driven on the left.
I'm not talking about the vehicle driven on the wrong side of the road.

PG here, Thank you for the video, love the smiles and conversation. Drone footage was fun. Snow is great for winter videos.
    nigh, almost.
"a car weighing nigh on two tons"
Similar: well-nigh, almost, nearly, just about, more or less, practically, virtually, all but, as good as, next to, close to, near, to all intents and purposes, approaching, bordering on
verging on, nearing,, about, roughly, approximately, not quite, pretty nearly, pretty much, pretty well
    2. at or to a short distance away.
Off would be further away, nigh is closest further away would be the off horse. So, then it would be determined by which side you were on.

Doesn't matter if it is team of mules, horses, donkeys or oxen. The side you work from the most or generally mount the wagon is the left side. This is the near or nigh side. The side you generally have to walk around something to get to is the off side, which is the right side. Doesn't matter if it is the right side of the right-hand animal of the team. Near or nigh, the side closest at hand, left side. Off side, side farthest away, right side.

Jim, are you deliberately trying to confuse us. 😂😂
Simply, the terms Near and Off apply when you are driving the horses and doesn't change even when you are standing in front of the horses facing them 😂😂
    Am I correct?
Loving the snow by the way ❤

The near/far horse is like a car or boat. The right/left side of your car is always determined as if your sitting in the car. A boat, same thing except it's starboard (right) port(left).
Anyway cool to learn about the horse, I'm always interested. My dad growing up on my grandparents farm and grandpa (1861-1956) didn't like the modern trucks, tractors. Always farmed with horses. So I grew up hearing about my dad using the horses in hay season, planting etc from the time he was around 8-9 years old.

I liked the explanation of near and off, its like on a ship, the portside (red light at night) is the left side when facing front, but its always the portside no matter if you turn around or not, by the way the right side is starboard (green light at night).
It looks cold out there, keep warm and safe, thanks for the video.

Near means left off means right gee means right haw means left. Because you usually think of it from the horses perspective left is left and right is right .if your looking at brenda her right hand is still her right hand it doesn't magically change when you get behind her.

Jim, What your describing is the position in the hitch. same as port and starboard are on a boat, driver's side or passenger side on a vehicle ext. Its so no matter what direction the thing is moving it describes the specific side.
I only knew of this from old logging camp stories where they would have 20 or so teamsters rotating horses 2-3 times a day. they never always got the same horses and they would have 100 or more horses so if a horse wasn't good at swapping sides then they got an o or an N branded after their owner's brand and number so at a glance you knew what side to hitch that horse on

I grew up in England, where we drive on the left. The terms Offside and Nearside were used with respect to cars, the nearside being the side nearest the verge of the road and the offside being the side towards he middle of the road. If for any reason we had to drive on the right, these terms would still be clear.

i believe these terms came from ox drovers who walked beside the left ox to drive the team, hence the nigh or near ox and the off or far ox

In the UK, where they drive on the left , the side of a car next to the kerb is known as the near side while the side away from the kerb is known as the off side; so the near side front wheel is the same whether you are in the driving seat or looking back from the front of the car.

Near/Off, wheeler/swing/leaders/drag, gee/haw. In my horse videos I try to use the correct terms insofar as it matters with my average ten views lol. I introduced my 4 up hitch a year ago and tried to explain their positions in the hitch as such. I think regional variations are only important on a practical level in situations where either new drivers or new horses are concerned, i.e. if someone gets a job elsewhere working horses, or a horse gets sold to someone who uses different vocal cues. Tradition plays a role.
I'm glad I don't have to spread manure ein the winter! When we milked cows we often had to fight with frozen spreaders and stable cleaners here in Canada.

Brenda....please ask Jim where the terms really started...Back in middle age Romans first started wearing swords in battle on left side...when mounting horse on right the sword was in the way...therefore they always mounted on left so sword would not interfere with mounting and called it the near side..the right was the away side. Keep working.. Hen

It makes perfect sense to me. You’re using the cart as your guide. In the riding horse world, near means the left side of the hitch/team and off is the right side of the hitch/team.
With driving, the team is one entity. So it makes sense that the same principle would apply. The near horse would be on the left side and the off horse will be on the right side in orientation to the cart. Not the way you are looking at them , because that can change frequently.
But what do you say when there are several horses abreast, say 4? Did I stump you Jim?

  • @patricksherwin4130
    @patricksherwin4130 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

In the UK we refer to the left side of a car (or carriage)as the nearside (closest to the pavement). the right side is the off side furthest from the pavement.
This would be your nigh side and our offside is equal to your off horse. so i think your OFF horse is furthest from the sidewalk and the NIGH horse is closest to the sidewalk.

Exactly like port and starboard. When facing toward the bow or front of the ship (or the rear of the horse) , port is the left and starboard is right (or OFF and NIGH). this does not change for any orientation on the boat.

In Denmark we use nearer and farther (nearer and farther) explained by the fact that the horse on the left in a lead (two horses) was always ridden on the left horse, why, no explanation, maybe almost oncoming traffic. The furthest horse on the right, furthest away from the rider, was the hand horse if you rode on the lead.
From what I remember, the coachman didn't talk so much to the horses, but led them with the reins. However, our milkman used prrrrr and glicglic. The myth was that our milk coach on the return milk route did not have to say anything or indicate with the sticks on New Year's Eve from the last farm to the barn, as the coachman was asleep. A cigar and a dram for a good new year, on every farm, independent the two experienced horses.
