Unless Cabaret just comes out guns blazing in terms of critical support ( we know it's making bank) I just don't see how Groff loses. Redmayne would be a good shout if he didn't have the other Tony. I know that doesn't matter much at the Tony's but Groff is seen as someone who's due.

Great analysis -- very impressive. I think your top four picks are very solid contenders. After that, it feels pretty open. I have a hard time believing Ryan Vazquez will get nominated -- The Notebook really didn't get very good reviews, his performance wasn't singled out, and he shares too much stage time with others. I certainly hope Grant Gustin doesn't get nominated, as I thought he was the weakest element in W4E, and his vocals were serviceable at best. That leaves me thinking that Chip Zien will make it, more for his body of work than his performance in Harmony.

Anyone else kinda wish some of these shows waited til next year? It's just so crowded! Also, will any of the new musicals even win much? Seems like its gonna be a revival heavy year. Next year as well.

Ali Louis Bourzgui was absolutely phenomenal in The Who’s Tommy - I wouldn’t count him out! 😊 Definitely a leading performance and my personal standout of the entire 2023-24 season. (For context, I’ve seen almost every show mentioned in this video - including Merrily). Love your videos by the way!

When it comes to "consistent with opening night credits": If a performer's name is listed above the title on the Playbill credits page, they are automatically put into consideration for Lead Actor/Actress in a Play/Musical. For instance, Brian d'Arcy James and Kelli O'Hara were billed above the title for "Days of Wine and Roses" so they are automatically put into those categories. All three of the leads in "Merrily" (Radcliffe, Mendez, and Groff) were billed above the title, but the producers petitioned to have Mendez and Radcliffe in the Featured category. Producers can petition for performers to be placed in separate categories that aren't consistent with their opening night credits. Most of the musicals this season had all performers listed below the title - producers had to petition to put performers like Eden Espinosa, Maryann Plunkett, Ali Louis Bourzgui, James Monroe Iglehart, and Grant Gustin in the Lead Performer categories. Sorry if this is convoluted, but hope it makes sense!

I’m going to nyc for a week at the start of June! Do you think I should buy some tickets for shows now before the nominations or should I wait till I get there? I would love to see merrily

So exciting! I think buying tickets before the nominations for Merrily would help with availability and hopefully price

    My predictions
    1. Jonathan Groff
    2. Eddie Redmayne
    3. Brian D’Arcy James
    4. Ali Louis Bourzgui
    5. Brody Grant
With the mixed reception to Cabaret, I don’t see how Groff loses, though I think Redmayne being a big name will help him. I also think D’Arcy James has a lot of respect that will allow him to get in, and with The Who’s Tommy being well reviewed, I think the Tony’s will nominate Bourzgui. For the fifth slot, I picked Brody Grant because I’m predicting The Outsiders to get a Best Musical nom, and I do think it needs an acting nomination for that. Not to mention, his performance was praised despite the show’s lukewarm reviews.
Aside from those, Randells and Gad from Gutenberg are my sixth and seventh respectively, but I am not predicting them since their show has been closed since January. I think the Chip Zien for Harmony ship has sailed with low long that show’s been closed for and the the mediocre reviews it got, and I think Jeremy Jordan is also not happening with Gatsby’s mixed reviews.

I have officially moved Bourzgui into my top 5 and debating how far to move Redmayne down. Really curious about if Zien gets in

Cabaret is funny cause every production has different categories for the same characters. Like don’t quote me on this but I think Sally Bowles wasn’t nominated in the original production.
