The Green Recovery: how to fix Australia's energy inefficient homes

  • The Australian home has a big problem: it's draughty, poorly insulated and costs a fortune to heat and cool. Most older homes have an abysmal energy efficiency rating - and we are paying the price. So what can be done to fix the problem? A lot, actually. And the government could play a role in retrofitting Australia's existing housing stock with its coronavirus stimulus spending. Here's how.

Such a great short video. Yes!!!! I am a West Aussie, you would think in a state as hot as WA, we would understand how to build a house that is cool in summer? When I built my home, I had to request certain insulation, I requested to boost a level. The house is pretty well insulated, ceiling, walls, floor, but it's on stilts, and the floor waste in the toilet goes straight to the atmosphere, the bathroom exhaust, is a tiny wall exhaust that's shutters never worked. All of which I have been working on....
Our house costs much less to run than my friends, it is much smaller, but also much more efficient, but I can still make it better.
Solar, heat pump HWS, 2x splits, full grey water recycling, insulation, double glazed windows. I've plugged most leaks, so much so, I'm now getting some mould, so I need to get some mechanical ventilation. I need to put some shade on the verandahs on the west side, and I need some rain water tanks,
We also have gone full electric cars. It's been a fun challenge.
    One Life, One Search,
    Shane.

This is a no brainer and triple glazing would be a great incentive to have a gov grant behind.

I've got insulation, awnings, solar panels. Should have a heat pump. I export surplus electricity to the grid. Its not hard.

"Oh, Western freedom-loving “left-wing” thinkers! Oh, left-wing laborists! Oh, American, German and French progressive students! All of this is still not enough for you. The whole book has been useless for you. You will understand everything immediately, when you yourself - "hands behind the back"-toddle into our Archipelago."

What exactly is it that you think is not enough? What warped perception have you cultivated in your little bubble?
