Yeah - Tonelli was a backstroker. I still get shivers watching this. Tonelli told me that the change over by Brookes registered 0.00.00 on the electronic timing. Have a look at it in this video - it's scary!
If I'm not mistaken, this is the only time a gold medal winning medley relay team did not feature any individual gold medalists on the team. Of course, if the US would have been there they probably would have won going away due to the fact that Rowdy Gaines (freestyle), Matt Gribble (butterfly) and Steve Lundquist (breaststroke) were all in their primes. The only question mark would have been in the backstroke.
True but the US put their best together to form a medley relay team the same weekend at their replacement games. We went faster. Wish they weren't robbed by Carter from competing. It would have been a good race.
@@RealEstateNewsShow Swimmers swim faster when pushed to do so by competitors. Also comments like playing like guitars or smashing the closest competitors riles up the swimmers to swim faster. Both Americans and French regret talking trash. Well I hope they did!
Tryndets Apart from your obvious english grammar challenge, Australia were not only 'Olympian' at the 1980 Olympics, but upheld an 84 year old commitment to attend every Olympic Games since 19th century Athens (and since). The fact that geopolitics played a particularly nasty role in our international sporting endeavours is a black spot on everyone's freedom. To the Moscow and every other Olympian... Stand proud and thanks for teaching us to be the best we can be under all circumstances.
Real Estate News Television You are the best in two things: picking on grammar errors made by non-native speakers when you have nothing to say and denying the obvious. That was pretty damn original way for Australia to participate in the Moscow Olympics as Moscow neither saw Australian flag nor heard Australian anthem.
The Australian flag was not present because there was unofficial representation by non-Soviet teams to not show their flags at the games. Some athletes did not attend their representation of the Moscow Games because of the boycott. But other athletes felt so strongly about attending, that they went. It kept Australia's perfect Olympic attendance record intact.
Still gets me excited 40 years later.
Me too thanks in no small part to Norman's iconic commentary.

Like everyone else has said the commentary by Norman May is incredible. An ionic moment in Australian sport.
Still one of the great Australian Olympic performances, particularly by the "makeshift butterflyer".

Australia wasn't Olympian in 1980 and has nothing to do with these finals.

UnSubRocky Why Western teams didn't show their flages at the games?
