  • The biggest PlayStation exclusive of 2022 is undoubtedly God of War: Ragnarok. Whether measured by critical or commercial success, Ragnarok has already blown away an audience of millions with its amazing gameplay, beautiful aesthetic, compelling performances, and surprisingly deep story. To discuss the many intricacies of Santa Monica Studio's seventh completed project, the Sacred trio gathered with regular contributor Rick Hoeg for a lengthy chat that -- as you may have guessed -- spoils the adventure in its entirety. We truly get into the weeds here, so it goes without saying: If you haven't beaten God of War: Ragnarok, or if you want to go in blind, you absolutely shouldn't listen to or watch this. For everyone else, feel free to join our pantheon as we try to stave off the end of all things.

    Can I just say, I really appreciate this is a spoilercast without the creators of the game involved.
    Noticed a trend recently of game directors showing up on so many media outlets and it prohibits a real discussion about the game as you're often tip towing around insulting them. Kind of controls the narrative of a games reception.

    Hoag Completely missed the point entirely
    The future seers explain that fate and destiny does NOT exist just that everyone is so predictable by who they are and they don't / rarely change
    The painting at the end that he was worshiped as a good God was painted over the one where he died because he changed because he OPENED HIS HEART to the suffering of innocent civilians

      But how could predicting people's behavior predict ragnarok? That makes no sense. Ragnarok is a magical event that involves the world being destroyed outside of anyone's power. There is a lot of magic involved that can't be predicted simply with people's behavior.

    • @williamaguilar9389
      @williamaguilar9389 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warrenharshaw7677 Think about it like this: The Three Omni God is not real
      God doesn't KNOW exactly what WILL happen in the future, he knows every possibility of everything that can happen in the future and plans accordingly. The Battle of Armageddon/End of the World happens no matter what but who is on which side of that war is up to us to determine. As for God of War and this example, most people are pretty steady in their mannerisms that it's easy to predict the most likely possible future out of the many.

    • @warrenharshaw7677
      @warrenharshaw7677 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @williamaguilar9389 You said that Armageddon was an event that needs to be predicted in order for them to know how everybody will react and what their actions will lead to. The event still needs to be predicted, and that has nothing to do with people's behavior because it is already set in stone. How do they even know the behaviors of people who they have never met before?
      How do they know that killing Baldur will bring on Fimblewinter? Why and how does killing Baldur lead to fimblewinter?
      Plus, they failed at predicting several things and people's behavior. They said that Kratos would kill Heimdall to save Atreus. But the reason Heimdall is dead is because he was in the way of them trying to save Freyr. Also, they did not predict the behavior of Surtur and his wife, who did not want to start ragnarok and frankly had no reason to. The seers should have been able to predict their behavior, considering they had felt this way for some time.

    It's interesting to me that Chris brings up The Last of Us 2 for having an obvious premise that is easy to accept (revenge is bad) because the same thing could be said about God of War. When Kratos fights for revenge, the results are never good, but when he forgives, the revenge cycle is broken. The only difference is that TLOU2's solution is forgiveness of others, while Ragnarok's is forgiveness of self.

    The thing about the millions of up-gradable armor and weapons pieces is that literally every single stat in the game has a build you can make with (strength, stun, elemental, runic, rage, etc.) and gives you the freedom to play how you want and replay-ability with different builds. Some people only like to use runic so runic armor pieces will charge them faster etc. You can also set your favorite moves to cause even more stun/element/damage when doing the little challenges for them, making those armor pieces even more useful. Or you can mix and match

      It's weird... I loved the game and loved the ending, but where Colin has said I think on an episode of Sacred Symbols that the game doesn't respect your time I agree with, but I don't agree that the game was too long... I think maybe that's the nature of being a reviewer or setting an expectation on an experience, but for many I think who don't have the burden of turnaround that can take the game in bursts, the experience is richer. So basically I think there is nuance there as some of those boss fights and Muspelheim trials DEFINITELY don't respect your time, but the story and downtime does.

    • @ptroit
      @ptroit ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vincevirtua eh. I think sometimes it's the line between "this is a fun use of my time" vs. "this feels like checkmarking for checkmark sake". I know to some degree much of gaming is that now, but... It's hard to explain. As a God of War, for the rest of the game I feel like either a bad ass or that the challenge in a moment is earned. Some of the Muspelheim challenges, the Bezerkers, and Gna stood apart from the ramped challenge of the rest of the game. Thor was hard both times, Odin wasn't a walk in the park, some of the dragons were hard, the stalker Centaur in Vanahiem, Nidhogg, they were all reasonable challenges. Muspelheim during those final challenges bordered between fair and insane challenge/strategy. Some of the Bezerkers leaned heavy on requiring good parrying, which I have not been able to master the entire campaign (I was much better in 2018 so not sure why it was so much worse now), so it made those fights, no matter how much I altered my playstyle, nearly impossible. I get those are optional to the story, but to get get through the entire game and do almost everything fine and almost platinum it until the last 3 boss fights and feel their difficulty not match the other bits of the game is really jarring. Also the late game 3 gong bells for nornir chests were way more egregious this time around. I think in those ways, I agree to the merits of it not respecting my time as a gamer. I played on balanced the whole playthrough, but those last 3 Bezerkers and Gna did not meet the criteria of "balanced" imo.

    1:50:59 That compass I had it set as swipe on/off in the game settings, and had it off for I'd estimate 80% of the time. You really don't need to have it there much. As for the puzzles, they've been a staple of past God of War games pre-2018, but I agree largely that a lot of them were flawed. I actually found the puzzle back-seating weird. I stopped getting the NPC feedback at a certain point later on, which was exactly when I actually needed the help as opposed the easy shit early/mid game.

    I do not believe that Kratos relapsed by killing Heimdall. Heimdall was trying to stop them from saving Freyr. Kratos even gave him a chance to get away, but Heimdall's pride would not let him leave without a fight to the death. If Kratos didn't kill Heimdall, he would have just kept coming back and back and maybe even hurt Atreus in the process.

The dude basically fumbles his words, trying to figure out if he knows Kratos or not, only to tell them that he wants to be left alone after a lifetime of solitude. Just went out of his cell into the room outside of the cell and sat on the floor, like what. That character amounted to nothing in the end.

    Good discussion fellas. Overall after beating the game i found the ending to be very abrupt and underwhelming. Asguard as a whole was disappointing. The final 3 boss fights were lackluster and many questions are left unanswered. Fast travel in this game is abysmal. Atreus leaving at the end as soon as the war is over feels out of place. For me there was alot more that i wanted at the end and its done and over with in a hurry, wish this story was 3 games instead of just 2.

    I think Chris, along with some people that also think the message in TLoU 2 is too basic, maybe forget or didn't notice that that game IS also about self-forgiveness, Ellie forgives herself in the end for wasting all those years she could've had with Joel, I think that's a bit of a disservice people do to this game with their interpretation of "it's only revenge bad".

    I think its great. I would have enojoyed it more if I didn't do the side quests from the beginning instead of basically letting myself get burnt out before stopping doing side quests two thrids of the way through. For me my biggest criticism is Freya doesn't feel like a well rounded character so traveling around with her for so long isn't great. Also Mimir, Freya's and Atreus's combat "chatter" or whatever you call it, felt a lot like marvel dialog and style of humar which really bogged me down after hearing those lines so much. In general the writing has a lot of "oh that's giant stuff" and "can't believe I just said that", "because THAT's a normal thing to say" marvel-isms which I would have tolerated much better had I just taken the shortest through line through the story. Great performance by Odin - awesome being in asgard. The way they try and humanize Thor and his wife and child could have worked, but fell felt for me.

      @JuliusCaesar103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rd_2113 it didn't make sense to you that Freya was angry at the man who killed her son?
      If you read the Norse Myth, it says that Heimdall had a vision about Baldur dying, and Frrya tried to prevent that but all she forgot was the mistletoe. The thing about this is that Odin has absolutely no hand in any of this, Kratos is the only one to blame about Baldur's death, but Freya forgives him and says that Idin is the one she should be angry with. No! Kratos is the only one whom Freya should be angry with.

    I liked the game a lot. Maybe not as much as the previous game though. I agree about parts slowing it down though. I did not really enjoy most of the parts where I was controlling Atreus. Atreus's combat was just not fun, and it was too simple. The part with Atreus and Angraboda riding around on the yak was really tedious.
    My favorite part of the game was probably they side area on Vanaheim, "The Crater" that section itself could have been it's own stand alone DLC and would have been as good as The Frozen Wild for Horizon Zero Dawn.

      I totally disagree with them about the puzzles though. God of War games all have puzzles, and not all of them are combat puzzles. I enjoyed the puzzles a lot, and that is where the Castelvania aspect came in. However, yes I think EVERYONE thinks the dialogue from the side characters telling you how to do the puzzles is annoying, so IMO, play testing should have told them NOT to do that. Also, Freya's VA was so wooden and deadpan in those bits of dialogue.

Egypt would be visually cool to see but I think exploring western religion could be just as fascinating and you don’t even need to really include Jesus. Maybe he is just talked about like Oden was in the first Star Wars game or he could just be kind of a background character that you don’t know who is Jesus
