Using the Dirtywave M8 as a MIDI Sequencer - Tutorial #5

- One of the coolest features about the Dirtywave M8 is the ability to control or sequence gear via MIDI, but it might not always be clear how that works in practice. In this 'tutorial' I introduce the MIDI output mode, explaining how you can sequence synthesizers over USB MIDI or mini DIN, as well as using the touch screen to control different parameters.

I post all of the music I make, including WAV stems; sample packs; Dirtywave M8 song bundles; collections of video textures; early access to videos; and a whole pile of other stuff on Patreon. I know I know, I hate doing this as well, but if you like what I do and want to get more of it, while also helping me offset some of my ludicrous gear purchases, this is the best place to do it:

FYI MIDI CC values are 0 to 127, not 0 to 255.
Maths was never my strong point... pinned.

Thanks so much for this Stephen my friend (who's a synth?!).
I've been having loads of fun now my tt-303 is synched up - great tutorial, I've got plenty to try out!!! ❤🤗👍☮️
Edit: i should add for context i was always put of trying midi after i unsuccessfully tried CV on my MPC one and my collection of pocket operators. Initially i had problems with midi, but realise i had the wrong sort of midi to trs cables. So sorted now and having lots of fun!

This device just gets better and better. Great video. Thank you. The excitement, for mine arriving, is rising. It's at about EF at the minute 🤣
Can't wait for FF

This video was super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant tutorial thanks Stephen! I'm joining the m8 gang soon. I think I'm gonna love it.
Can the touch screen assignment work on macrosynth too? Guess so?
It should do yes!
Thank you for your explanation about midi setting.
Is it possible to note input using actual hardware synth?I mean playing external synth in real time to note input on M8's phrase view.
You would need some kind of MIDI input in order to do that as far as I am aware. You couldn't just record notes in via pitch detection if that's what you are thinking about.
Nice video. Quick question - have you used the M8 to sequence the pulsar? I’m having issues setting up the midi cc control
Hey there, I haven't tried that yet. What bit are you stuck on with the MIDI CC specifically?
This is so cool! What an awesome little device. You definitely could have got away with a click bait title for this video..."Why You Absolutely Cannot Sleep on the M8 in 2022"
Haha I am trying to keep a respectable balance between ludicrous thumbnails and actual useful/descriptive videos :D
I wouldnt have clicked on it if he did.
We already know how good a device it is.
Quality titles are a luxury, don't encourage their continued death.
Another great video! I'm learning a lot about this thing from your videos, so thank you! Also... Do you still have the colored key caps for sale? I saw you were at one point selling them... I'm looking for 4 pink and 4 baby blue but can't find them anywhere.
Hey, thanks! I'm glad they are helpful. I don't have any other key caps for sale unfortunately. Check out keycapsss.com/ as they have some I think.
@@StephenMcLeod Thank you! I will check it out
When is note off sent? is it with the onset of the next note? How does that work with CHD and ADD?
I believe note off is only sent on next note or if transmitted manually via an FX lane command. Same with chd and I'm not sure what add is off hand...

Does the M8 receive or send midi clock? can you sync it with another groovebox?
It does both!
@@StephenMcLeod great! Thank you!
Are the midi capabilities the same thru the 3/8ths cable as thru the USB? Do you know how many v/oct cv and gates it can send simultaneously?
They are the same, yeah. I'm not sure what you mean re CV outs though - there's no CV/gate outputs. You would need a MIDI to CV converter for that.
Hello, thank you so much for your videos :)
Do you know how to set several instruments with the m8?
Maybe I’m missing something but I watched every tutorial possible and I did not found how to do it
I connected my m8 to a synth (which has the role of the sound card here) and a drum machine.
The problem is that when the track 1 of the synth plays, the track 1 of the drum machine plays a the same time and so the same notes as the synth …
Do you know how to configure the midi channels ? Is it possible ? Is there a way to say channel 1 to 4 are for the synth and the rest for the drums ? Maybe I should connect the m8 to something « neutral » ?
I hope I’m not wasting your time, thanks a lot
Hiya. Do you mean you are controlling different MIDI instruments from the M8 as a sequencer? If so, make sure the MIDI device is listening on the appropriate channel. It sounds like the drum machine may be set to Omni, so receiving MIDI data on any channel.
@@StephenMcLeod thanks a lot I will try this :)

All my friends are synths 😂 lolled aloud
This is probably a quite silly question, but can you record audio directly into the m8? I don't mean as a sample but If I had a part on a hardware synth can I load the audio into the M8 as part of a song?
As in... Use the M8 as kind of a mixer? You can definitely sample in, and I guess would be able to preview audio input but I'm not 100% sure on that one I'm afraid!
Can you receive audio from AND send midi to Elektron Digitakt through USB, at the same time?
To and from the M8 over usb? No. I don't believe that is possible.
