      @Hauntaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Gantoris You could try finding a multiplayer game for you to both play or a single-player game that they pick to play. Even if they don't play games, playing games with them or letting them try at least 1 game for just 1 time will probably tighten the relationship ties with you two a bit better. They may not like playing the game, but they'll be able to understand why you enjoy it and may be more respectful when you are spending some time to enjoy something fun.
      Note: This advice may or may not work. I'm not liable if they get mad or frustrated. I'm some random person on the internet sharing my opinions. Just do what works best for you.

    I feel most guilty playing games when the wife is being productive around the house. It could be a Saturday and she'll just start steamin the floor and nothing makes me feel like a lazy bum then her getting stuff done. I end up turning it off and get things done. The best time is when she says, "I'm taking the kids and going out to the store" Guilt free game time baby!

      Sounds kinda like she does all of the work. Try to make more time for your family to go to a restaurant or something. Be on level ground and do an equal share of the work and share the fun of gaming if they want to play too! Buy a Wii with a copy of Wii Sports at least. Oh, and maybe MySims Party for the younger ones. If a Wii is too expensive, just stick with fun multiplayer games on your already owned console.

    I definitely feel guilty playing video games these days. For me it's because I am an artist and musician and I don't spend enough time doing those things. After a long day at work though, it is a lot easier to plop down and play a game than it is to work on a drawing or song. It is definitely something I need to work on. I don't want to quit games entirely as they are something I immensely enjoy, but I would like to cut back to perhaps an hour on weekdays and maybe two or three hours on weekend days.

    • @tonyp9313

      I'm an artist as well and I think that 1 or 2 hours per day is alright. A few of my art teachers and friends at university play video games as well. Probably more than me.
      In my opinion, artists don't really waste the time playing video games because a video game can inspire you to make a new art piece. I either hear a song that I like, a moment from the story impresses me or the visuals from a game inspire me and I create a new art piece. Recently, Rayman 1 inspired me to create a children's book for example.

    • @Hauntaku
      @Hauntaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sonicmaiden2871 I feel bad for anyone who goes to art school expecting to magically get better with the stuff they teach you there. The key to making amazing art is PASSION! It's also about relaxing in-between your art projects. If you're always go-go-going then you're go-go-going to get worse. Relax! Watch some cartoons/anime, eat some tasty food, and remember to sleep! When time comes to draw, always do your very best! Teachers will push you to do a ton of work over and over and over and over, but it's not going to be the thing that makes you improve. Only YOU can improve your abilities by practice drawing and studying current--day art online for a few hours a week. OH! And when you sit down to play a game, take a while to admire the graphics. Admiring art and trying to reverse-engineer the design is how you can improve even more as an artist.

    I do feel guilty playing videogames. Not to the degree that it prevents me from playing when I have time, but I do feel guilty. You're absolutely right though. We all need an outlet, a hobby, a pastime. Something we do that brings us some level of joy. Life is entirely too short to not indulge in those activities sometimes. The whole "feeling guilty because you have other things you wish to enjoy" is currently what I've been going through for quite a while now. What I've learned from the experience is that one should be honest with themselves. To elaborate, listen to your gut/desires and focus on those other interests. It's ok, do not feel like you MUST play your backlog or that you MUST play the game everyone is talking about, you do you, there's a reason why you have other interests and it's good to let them have their time in the sun. If you force yourself to play a game when let's say you have movie you really want to watch or an album you really want to get to, you're probably not going to enjoy the game as much (if at all) which is a bit of a disservice to the creators in my opinion. Took me a while to come to this conclusion but now that I have, I've been really enjoying my other hobbies...again, it's ok to give gaming a break, just be true to your mood. Hope this helps!

    • @Hauntaku
      @Hauntaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just play games when you can and only buy the ones that you will actually play. Avoid any games that have microtransactions. Remember to keep your collection at a level that isn't too daunting.

I mean, we have this entire society of food production, mineral extraction, factories, hospitals, infrastructure maintenance, government...all of where most of us work in some way. I feel this one a lot. To the point where when I actually get time to play (empty house), I get overwhelmed with choice and end up NOT playing. It's a rare few times a year when I can play through a game, and even then it's likely to be a shorter one. I also tend to play 1-2 hours of a game and then want to try another game, and then leave a trail of unfinished games in my wake, feeling overwhelmed about trying to relearn controls/abilities and more likely to just start it over again than continued a save game.

Whether that attitude is justified or I'm just beating myself up about it could be interpreted one way or the other. I do appreciate your gaming positive attitude though, it's reassuring. Wow this really hits home! Living alone I rarely have time to actually play any of my games because everyday is very monotonous with working long hours & then having to cook/clean/eat , scoop the litter box, feed the cats, clean water etc. spend TIME w the cats & of course then SLEEP.. there just never seems to be any time for them. On my one off day I usually have to do laundry or run some errands or deep clean the apartment so basically by the time I finish all my adult stuff & feel there’s a time to sit down & enjoy… I fall asleep with the controller in my hand from pure exhaustion. :/ there was also a time when I was working 7 days a week & sometimes going a month straight without a day off so I found it easier every night/ morning to throw on a TH-camr discussing/reviewing retro games or playing them with commentary to watch while eating my breakfast or dinner then pass out after or go to work (I had some days that started at night too) because I didn’t quite have the energy to play either before or after work… Then I feel like sometimes when I was awake trying to play I couldn’t spark the feeling because I felt lonely lol. It’s tough. If you have autoimmune issues this worsens the situation too. & If you’re in a relationship of any sort this can get easier or tougher depending on how that person is. The guilt is only when I do decide to put off doing errands on my off day for the next one instead because I’m tired & would rather relax. I don’t have kids or anything so this basically boils down to grocery shopping for the month, picking up a few things I might have ran out of like paper towels, doing the laundry, getting my bangs cut (they grow back so damn fast!) 😂 …. Then there’s the guilt I feel from time to time about not investing in my business yet. 🙄

    My habits change with the seasons. Living in Canada our seasons are extreme so during the summer I really try and profit from the great summer weather. Going biking, sailing, going for swims. Etc.Going to the gym is also an important habit to me that I've had since my teenage years. So I'll go for 1 hour workout in the evening and then play a game when I get back home. During winter I'll spend a lot more time indoors so video game times increases.
    Essentially I think it's important to find a balance between the physical needs of your body, your other life ambitions (career, knowledge etc) and then pleasure, which is where I would place video games.

    Edit: I forgot to add that I really relate to the feeling that games take up a lot more energy than research and so research takes up most of my videogame-related time. I also have performance anxiety when it comes to games(especially multiplayer games). I hesitate on the trigger, the jump, and the dash!

    O...M...G! it was like you made this video just for me! I don't know why but I've always thought this was just a me thing. Glad to know I'm not alone in feeling this adult game guilt! It's gotten much, much worse since I had my kid over 4 years ago. I'm just waiting for the day he gets to the age that we can sit down to play together. Thanks to this video, though, I actually stayed up until midnight last night playing video games after I put my son to bed and I didn't feel bad about it, so THANK YOU! And to your point about watching videos of people playing video games as opposed to actually playing them because it uses less energy...ABSOLUTELY! I do much more of that than actually playing nowadays. Speedruns are my jam.

    I don't feel guilty about playing, but I don't always make as much time as I'd like. I have to have priorities to make sure my bills are paid, my kids are happy and get real time and attention, and that my wife has help keeping up with the house... and that my other friends and family get actual human acknowledgement from time to time. At least several times a week, though, there's a few windows in which I can play something for at least awhile.
    The difficult thing for me is choosing to play something that's a real time commitment. I like to generally have one longer game going at a time that is my main course, and squeeze in short-form games when I don't have time to really soak it in. Sometimes, though, there is a stretch where I finish something big and don't know what to follow it with, and I just flounder, looking at shelves or giving up and falling asleep. For instance, last November I played through Spiritfarer and loved it. I had no idea what to follow it with for a game that will take several long sessions, and it took me almost 2 months ro figure it out. Yes, I still played some stuff, and even beat a bunch of games, but I didn't work on anything big, because I just couldn't decide.

    So as a father with a special needs son who requires 6 therapies a week (one of which is an infusion therapy that takes about 7 hours) I generally feel bad playing video games too much. I try to read more books than play video games. Where my guilt comes in is when I'm trying to play an MMO and 10 minutes into my session my wife is hollering for me to help her with something, or she just wants to talk and misses me. This is why I usually only play fighting games like tekken 7 because the matches are quick, and I don't have to hard commit to hours of game time. This is also why I avoid retro games with dedicated save points. How can I play a game where I may not get a save point for another 30 minutes? I can't commit to that with all the things I have to do. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Webhead123
    @Webhead123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a pretty interesting guilt problem when it comes to video games. Mine has to do with the fact that, when it comes time to play a game, instead of tackling bigger or more involved games (that I genuinely want to experience), I often feel "lazy" and end up playing something that may be less satisfying but that is quick, easy and accessible. Rather than try to finish an RPG, for example, I'll end up playing a few stages of Super Mario Bros. or Street Fighter II, or just waste time on some disposable online multiplayer game. Even if I end up spending as much time overall as I would have spent playing said RPG, something about the effort to get invested and reinvested every time I fire up the game gives me pause. I'm getting better about it but that feeling still lingers.

    When I try to sit down and play a game and am unable to, I think my brain prevents me because my life is quite aimless and needs direction. Perhaps my brain feels that games could distract me from properly addressing my aimlessness, and could perpetuate it (not entirely a misplaced concern, I feel). Which I imagine falls into the whole "productivity ecosystem" of obligation that many others feel in their own way. While that mindset might not be entirely without merit for my situation, I think there may be a balance to find.

    The time I felt guilty playing video games is when I played them over doing homework, now as an adult I do my chores first and recreation later. But I have a multi task mind so I can play video games while washing clothes or cooking because since you got to wait for those to get done, well you know passing the time. The main matter is focus and awareness of what you're doing while playing video games

  • @xaviertwist4419
    @xaviertwist4419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find a good way to combat the "other chores" guilt is to simply plan to do them later. Simply tell yourself "I will definitely do them tomorrow, this time is for enjoyment". I think the "Other hobbies" guilt must have something to do with how bombarded with stimuli we are. We're always checking our phones for the latest news, latest meme, etc, we've all developed some light ADHD. When I sit down for an extended gaming session, I actually have to mind myself beforehand, thinking "this is what I will focus on for the next few hours, and only this". One thing you haven't mentioned though is societal guilt, you know, the little voice in your head that sounds like your parents saying "You're 30, why are you playing those little video games?", and you want to reply "Sorry I'm not doing something more productive with my time like watching Big Brother or the Bachelor".

We talk about the way we spend this time often to make sure that we are both comfortable with the way we spend our little "free" time.
