I made some cages for my game fowl from river cane about 5 years ago they worked fine.

He has a stone axe with a handle, he prefers the smaller axehead with no handle for many things because it's easier to use and bamboo doesn't take a whole lot of work to cut/split. If he has to cut down a tree or something he switches to the larger stone axe with handle.
