This is a great analysis, I just felt like adding. I personally think the Mogami arch is even more powerful if you consider that Mob's ideology didn't win. They were both right. Mogami suggested that in a world with all the wrong people, circumstances can make a person lash out. And he was right. Mob did lash out.
And the subsequent saving of Mob's very own bully was based off of Mob taking Mogami's ideology, and not adopting it but merging it with his own. Instead of "The wrong circumstances bring about evil" VS "people are good and kindness breeds more kindness" Mob suggests that wrong circumstances do bring about evil, Mogami is right, so Mob will be the protagonist in his life, and bring good circumstances to others.
I think the most direct example of Mob acknowledging Mogami's beliefs in his ideology is when Mogami tells him to be harsher with people. And Mob interprets this as telling his friends they aren't strong enough to fight with him, even if they don't want to hear it.
I just adore how Mob takes Mogami's ideas into consideration but never abandons the love his character is built on.

Mogami also takes on Mob's ideas . He releases Minegishi when Mob tells him to give him a chance to change. I highly doubt that the old Mogami would've done something so forgiving.

It’s really heart warming and emotional to see a character that is so innocent, emotionally intelligent, and kind. And completely consistent in his world views no matter the situation. It’s just refreshing and makes me smile. I really wish this show would get more popular because the comedy, action, and message are all extremely important and unbelievably well done. I think it’s something like 49th on MAL for best/most popular anime’s, at the very least it should be top 10, personally for me it’s number 1.
Studio Bones has just blown me away with how well they understand ONE and his characters. They truly grasp everything about this series and they have created without a doubt one of the best adaptations ever.

I like how it's also not as plain as "friendship saves the day," his friends give Mob courage but doesn't make his trials any less daunting. One of the things that makes the positive message really stick is that it's not overly saccharin and the show isn't afraid to touch into some deep darkness now and again. Sometimes people can be so difficult to reach that it becomes overly tempting to cast them out entirely. Mob isn't some Christ figure, he's a regular person, even he's not above the darkness that resides in us all. One of the most impactful of these dark moments is when Mob simply proclaims, "I give up" in the middle of fighting Suzuki. He dips into that darkness and is ready to accept that for some people empathy isn't enough; that some people just need to be purged. Of course it doesn't end up that way, but regardless of the support of all his friends, and how much he's grown as a person, he is not faultless. Even for just a moment, he's given up on his ideals, his philosophy; he's given up on humanity. While the show emphasizes the importance of empathy and the strength it endows us with, it doesn't pretend it's easy. Violence is the easy path. It's so much easier to crush your enemies with insurmountable power than it is to reach them.

Thanks for the great analysis. Another overused trope is the "be true to yourself" line that gets subverted in MP100.
While every single character on MP100 ends up wanting to improve themselves/ aspire for popularity, they are all deeply uncomfortable with their true selves (except the body Improvement club aka best anime bros)
Without diving into spoiler territory, ONE manages to show the real fears of revealing your true self to people you trust and how it's a daily struggle in self acceptance.
I really hope season 3 gets greenlit soon !

That parallel between Mob & Reigen and Serizawa & Toichiro was perfectly shown in that one shot where our two protagonists are standing together under an umbrella (the umbrella being an obvious callback to Serizawa)

understanding one's pain, kindness and growing by helping other is also the core theme of SKET DANCE, a school life gintama version. its also very very good series with "friendship" theme that goes beyond other anime from its time. summary : a club called sket-dan helping people in need. its amazing how absurd comedy animes like mob and sket dance (and others ) bring out and show the deepest idea and philosophical question

Now, this is an anime that deserves a great reward, such as the 'Anime of the Year'. The anime is visually satisfying and it also teaches life-long lessons, such as 'people need other people' which helped Mob's growth as a 14-year old Esper who just needs friends. He didn't use brute strength as a solution, he used friendship. If it helped him, It can help others.

Thank you SO much for this. For risk of sounding elitist, I've always felt like people rarely "get" this show. The messages of this show really resonated with me, and to me they were really obvious (without feeling preachy) but a lot of people seem to just.. miss them.
I've seen people disregard the first episode of season 2 as "filler", but to me that's one of the most important episodes of the entire show, because mob decides to show his emotions, which is a HUGE change in his character. If you want to watch MP100 just for explosions and fight scenes, go ahead but I think you'll be missing out on 90% of what makes the show enjoyable to me. Don't get me wrong the fights are great but they are more impactful when you understand the characters.
TL;DR I'm incredibly relieved someone feels the same way about this show I do.

  • @dest2118
    @dest2118 5 ปีที่แล้ว +72

Look man this gotta be one of the most underrated vids I’ve ever seen. You’ve perfectly nailed this analysis. That’s what make MP100 different. The protagonist has the strength to reach out to people because of the people who reached out to him. And that’s where another theme comes in: people can change with the help of others. With these two themes, we see mob develop as a character throughout the masterpiece that is called MP100 II (haha hope I’m not praising it too much).
Either ways, mob psycho is a genuine show/manga about friendship in its truest sense, as well as the desire to change oneself; without other people, changing yourself is quite hard to do. Teru would be the perfect example of that.

This video made me tear up, I love that you discussed everything I love about this series on point! Mob Psycho 100 is what made me evaluate myself as a person right now and what I learned from it is that I want to be true to my feelings and that I truly want to be able to change the people around me for the better just like Mob. I can definitely imagine what kind of person I'd be right now had I not met the people I cherish today and had my circumstances been different and well...it's not going to be any good. "I'm truly blessed, I need to be thankful for the people around me. Because of everyone, I was able to change." What a truly down-to-earth series this is. Really, MP100 is seriously in-depth and there's a lot of reality lessons we can take away from it.
