    Moral of the story? Don't ever fly over anything you wouldn't land on! Or something like that. What are your thoughts on this situation? Would you fly over a Florida swamp? Be sure to get entered into the Parajet/Aviator Paramotor giveaway before February 28th! One lucky winner is going to get a badass paramotor and some professional training! - tuckergott.com/collections/all

    My very first powered flight was over the swamps of West Barnstable, Cape Cod. I didn't get more than 200ft up and the engine seized. I wanted to keep going straight so I could land into the wind, but it was all 3ft deep water and 5ft deep mud under that. I decided to make an immediate left hand turn and deal with a downwind landing. If you've ever had to do one, you know they're no fun. I don't think my dog can run that fast ! I made a couple wraps around my hands of the brake lines and prepared for the worst. Well, I made it about 6 steps, then face planted into a ditch of water and mud with gas starting to leak and I freaked. I couldn't get that motor off me fast enough. All ended well, a little sore and a fried left cylinder, it was a 2 cylinder engine back then. It was also my instructors set-up ! Glad you're ok Tucker, well done.

    Hey Tucker, you wouldn't believe how many A&P mechanics that can't troubleshoot wiring. Unfortunately, this is very common in our industry and it's not really their fault - they weren't taught how to troubleshoot wiring in A&P school. A&P school teaches you enough to pass your written, oral and practical test to get your license - that's it. I've worked for a few major & minor airlines (pax and cargo) over the years doing line maintenance. You have to troubleshoot on the line. Pilots will either respect you or not based on you giving them a solid fix the first time. I've lost count how many times I've seen guys change part after part and not fix anything and subsequently, pilots don't respect them. First thing I was taught by senior technicians that actually want you to succeed is, not to be a parts changer - always check the wiring first, unless something obvious is broken. Most Aircraft Maintenance Manuals even have you check wiring alot of times, but people get hell bent on changing a physical part. We check for opens in wires, wires grounding out to the airframe or powerplant itself or shorting/touching another wire. Prime example, your wire was grounding out.
    Mechanics change parts. Technicians troubleshoot and change parts. Be safe. Can't wait to get a paramotor myself someday.

      It is not only in the aviation industry that electrical issues define whether or not a mechanic is any good at trouble shooting? Someone who fully understands electrical systems are worth their weight in gold. The aviation industry though really puts peoples lives at risk. Bottom line be very careful when routing wires they can rub through cause shorts and even fires. Tucker did a good job of field trouble shooting, knowing his mechanical limitations and prioritizing his escape from the swamp.

      Good post. I also work Avionics. 7 in the AF on B1's + 20 years so far now on Helicopters in the GOM. Wiring is always the first thing I check. If it's spittin and sputterin on a paramotor it's usually a bad wire.

Crazy story you'll tell your kids and students that may possibly save life or injury. Great job sticking that landing. As far as unplanned landings go, I'd take an engine failure there any day over where it could've been.

    That carbon fiber must be fairly conductive. I wonder what the ohm value is from where the wire was contacting the carbon fiber to ground. That was a good find, and we all should put it in our troubleshooting toolkit.

    • @doubledeeeeeeez
      @doubledeeeeeeez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The resistance value is in the Megohm range. And decreases as it heats up. I can tell you of a story of a carbon fiber AW-139 that had a brass pitot static alternate source sw that was mounted by the manufacturer far too close to a buss bar in a circuit breaker panel. Long story short.....I told them it was too close for comfort.....and they didn't believe me. Until they turned on power the week I was off and nearly burnt the Helicopter to the ground.

    Well, glad you kept a clear head and used it! I live on the Texas Gulf Coast and have been covered up black with mosquitos while fishing down in Baffin Bay. If you would have had to spend the night in the swamp, it would not have been pretty. Three things come to mind of things I would carry for surviving, mosquito repellent, a substantial knife and external cell phone battery with cord. But, hey you did a hell of job!

    Tucker, I had my kill switch on my old Quicksilver somehow move to “OFF” on take-off in Balersfield, Ca. Just cleared the low tension power lines across the street. I always am mindful of that switch and wiring after that! Great video.

    • @doubledeeeeeeez
      @doubledeeeeeeez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the exact reason I discourage anyone from wiring in additional "kill" switches. If you think about it, the kill sw is more of a circuit for emergency use or convenience use only. It's not absolutely needed or necessary for flight. But the motor running to clear a 50 foot obstacle is. So why add in more possibility of a fault in the circuit? The more wires you add and splice in, the more chances you have of those wires going bad and causing an engine out. I say keep it simple, have one kill sw on the throttle recessed in a cavity that won't get bumped on launch or normal flight by accident, and check it on every preflight run up. Glad you didn't get caught up in the lines...

    My "coulda, shoulda, woulda" list. Don't leave over territory without the tools to land there. Some real boots (a minor foot issue makes this much worse), a bag for the chute, a modicum of survival gear, a minor weapon, a small EPIRB(phones die). There is a lesson in realizing that hiking is extraordinarily tough with your gear. Great clear head on the recovery, even if the flight plan was sketchy. Here's to 10 million views.

    Love your videos. I always learn something from them. I’m an A&P and if I noticed those wires, it would be the first thing I would look at. Very important to properly sheath and route exposed wiring, especially on a machine that vibrates so much. All of the tangibles should be perfect. For real, if you can see it and touch it, make sure it’s perfect...no reason not to. Props for coming clean and owning it. No better education than killing your motor and landing in a swamp I suppose!

    Good learning lesson. I had a similar issue a couple years ago except that the exposed wire only occasionally made a weak connection causing the engine to sputter more than die in a very inconsistent way. Glad you got it figured out! The one suggestion I would have is to invest in a small emergency stuff sack and keep it in your side-pouch pocket with the tools. Tony (NCPPGpilot) makes the one I got, but there are others...even a heavy-duty trashbag can be of help when you gotta hike with the wing.
