Gaidinliu Pamei (26 January 1915 - 17 February 1993) popularly known as Rani Gaidinliu was a Naga spiritual and political leader who led a revolt against British rule in India. At the age of 13, she joined the Heraka religious movement of her cousin Haipou Jadonang. The movement later turned into a political movement seeking to drive out the British from Manipur and the surrounding Naga areas. Within the Heraka faith, she came to be considered an incarnation of the Goddess Cherachamdinliu. Gaidinliu was arrested in 1932 at the age of 16, and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the British rulers. Jawaharlal Nehru met her at Shillong Jail in 1937, and promised to pursue her release. Nehru gave her the title of "Rani" ("Queen"), and she gained local popularity as Rani Gaidinliu.

She was released in 1947 after India's independence, and continued to work for the upliftment of her people. An advocate of the ancestral Naga religious practices, she staunchly resisted the conversion of Nagas to Christianity. She was honoured as a freedom fighter and was awarded a Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

I really want to know the story of Haipou Jadonang and Rani Gaidinliu...I can't find much on internet in details.. I heard they're against Christian conversion by British. But now in hills almost all of them have converted to Christianity...I we should study their freedom movement and teach our young generation seems people didn't know their ideology even though they know them... please suggest me a book too...and I want to know how and since when "Naga" title comes to Manipur. Did this freedom fighters die as Naga cause I also heard the world Naga comes later to MANIPUR. Before Tangkhul, Maring, Kabui etc are living as it's but they later united under one umbrella tribe called "Naga"

@@Apple_12406 jadonang fought to establish a naga Raj..he was able to get support from the zeme, Liangmai and rongmei (zeliangrong) and a few Angami. But no support from all Nagas.
@@larnihanshu695 Jadonang and Gaidinliu worship Tingkhao Ragwang and promote the religion. Did Nagas in Nagaland like Ao, Angami, Sumi knows this? Did they worship Tingkhao Ragwang? If not why did they claim these Freedom fighter as their freedom. I think it would be wrong to do this? Why Nagaland Naga called Manipur Naga kacha Naga? The term Naga seems to be political normenclature to widen the population of Naga and area of occupation and fullfill dreams of greater Nagaland. NSCN plays a major role in forcing smaller tribe to put the Naga tag. Now all the Nagas are Christian which is against the physiology of these freedom fighters. They're against christianity. These freedom fighters will be disappointed with what's going on now and nobody follows their path but just for political gain they used them
@@Apple_12406 they were freedom fighters fighting for self determination. It has nothing to do with religion, the hereka movement was just a movement against the British imperialism and the events that showed many Christian converts, i guess the reason why it was not popular with other tribes was exactly because of that. He emphasizes the Heraka religion which other tribes don't relate with. But all in all he and Gaidinliu are recognised as freedom fighters because they fought for freedom against the British.
