Thank you! This is the exact tutorial I was looking for. I just received my first GoPro today (Hero5 Black) and what had me on the fence between this and the Virb was the GPS overlays. I ultimately opted on the GoPro hoping they add that feature down the road since it has GPS. I'm primarily using this for weight loss (I'm trying to lose roughly 100 pounds) and I feel having this with me would help motivate me to keep moving and doing things. Thank you for the tutorial, I'm now a new subscriber!

If you have a garmin device like a watch or bike computer, you have to save it as a track and the device automatically convert the data to .GPX. Great tip to overlay the data in any video thanks

This video saved my ride! The gopro 9 told me it didn't record the GPS data, but after watching this video I saw that I can pull the gpx off of strava, which was running. It was a pain to line up, but thanks a ton for this info. I think strava GPS is much more accurate than gopro, and I'm running it anyway... so I'll just have to make sure to put in some start / stops on my ride so I can match it up with the video easier, then cut it in the final edit.

    Kyle
I have a little refinement, if you point the camera at the gps display and then align the track and video using that it should improve accuracy
Probably little practicle difference but im afraid i am a bit ocd about this sort if thing😜

This worked fantastic! Thanks for such a good explanation. I used myTracks on my iPhone (free) and it exported the GPX just fine. Loaded it in to Virb and easy sync with my GoPro footage and then spent a lot of time playing with gauges. Great video here Kyle!

Brilliant. I don't know much about gopros but for putting overlays on DJI drone videos, its the ants pants. dji produces subtitle files which contain all position and time info, so if manipulate those files in a spread sheet you can get a text file of the data which gpsvisualizer can convert into a gpx file for you and that file is syncronised with the video.
VIRBeditor takes ages to export video. I'll have to be less greedy wiyh quality I guess Cheers

Watching this video in 2022, the latest VIRB version (which is very outdated unfortunately) does cause a problem with google maps on windows computers (maps don't show up). If you're searching for "Script error on that page - VIRB EDIT - API ISSUES" you will find a fix in the garmin forum on page 8, posted by the user Bruno

    • @S4von
      @S4von 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!
Copied the fix from Bruno's comment:
      1. Open command prompt or powershell in administrator mode.
      2. Copy and run the command to add the new entry:
      REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION" /v VirbEdit.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00002ee1

Greetings to all, great vid! Very informative! I have 2 questions though. A) i already have a foutage with a hero 6 with gps data and i am wondering i what type of format are the gps data stored in the gopro and b) is it possible by using the virb editor to import a map background on my gps (openstreet maps for example) in order to know visually where i have been.
    Thank you in advance!

Fabulous tips and worked amazing after I took the preview in virb editor out of "full 5k" from my gopro hero 9. It couldn't handle the 5k video preview. in 720p no problem. Still lets you output up to 4k. Used my Garmin 530 bike computer for pov video on my bike and gpx file worked great. the only weird thing in the app is the "sync" geo function. The video was upside down since my gopro was mounted upside down and even if I turned in 180 in the virb software, the sync function shows the upside down version which is hard to figure out and match up frames. My tip is do your flipping or rotating of video before importing into virb but otherwise worked as described. Thanks again!

Very impressed with VIRB Edit's features, but have encountered a significant problem that may impact those of you processing 4K video: Inexplicably, the maximum quality output file renders at a bitrate of around 40 Mbps. Most newer cameras record record 4K at bitrates higher than 40 Mbps, including my Sony (@ 100 Mbps). For me, this results in a very visible drop in quality post-rendering with overlays.

hello there, I am a cyclist, I have done what you do here, by manually align video footage with gpx file (garmin watch), not that easy since I have many footage during my ride and no idea where the start location of each footage , I don't record all the time during my ride (long ride 10-12 hours) but I record only specific location. I plan to buy Go Pro hero 7 with embedded gps location, my question if gopro footage with gps info can be synchronized with Garmin GPX file in order to have a complete ride ?

Unfortunately, the Virb software is no longer able to sync the GPS data. I assume that since the Virb camera line has been discontinued, the software will no longer be updated. When you get to the sync page, you'll see the message "You are using a browser that is not supported by the Google Maps Javascript API. Please consider changing your browser." I have Chrome and Edge already, tried the other recommended ones and they didn't work either.

Hi Kyle. Thanks for the very useful video. You're a legend! I only have one problem which I hope you can help with. I shoot first person hyperlapse running videos and while as you've shown it's quite easy to speed up and slow down the video in the VIRB software, but there doesn't seem to be a way to speed up the G-Metrics to sync with my hyperlapse videos. If my hyperlapse is a 2min30sec video representing a 30min run (playback at 12X actual speed), the software just assumes the video is only the first 2min30sec of my 30min run. Any way around this? Or would I have to slow the video down to match the G-metrix and completely rehyperlapse it? There seems to be a limit to how much I can slow the video down by. Must be another way.

Hello there and thank you for this video.
    I liked and subscribed.
I finally found a decent free app (except GoPro shitty app) to add data to my bike videos.
So I tried this advice and I am getting some strange readings.
For example while I am still standing and not moving at all speedometer showing 13km/h, how is that possible?
I tried to sync it as you advised but no luck for me.
I also tried to convert it to few other formats but it wasnt OK.
    Any suggestions ?

  • @dirtforce0897
    @dirtforce0897 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, really helpful, the software looks great, but it all boils down to having to use an inherently weak video editing software. GoPro or Garmin Verb have no where near the editing capabilities as Adobe premiere. So we're left having to do a double export and the overlays are burnt in so can't be removed if required while editing in another software :(

This information (which I found myself by experimenting) is great for new-comers, except that the exported video compression from VIRB Edit is terrible - clearly the bitrate is being compromised. The only way I got a decent quality product (but still not good enough) for TH-cam was exporting a 2.7/4k video at 30fps in VIRB so that the quality decreased to a.... less-pixelated than otherwise - but not quite acceptable as HD - 1080p mp4 file. Way too much artefacting for fast-motion video. It's great to be able to add GPS data and overlays to HERO4/5 Session video, but I'm not sure it's worth the loss is picture quality, and VIRB is very limited in what it can do.
It's better than nothing I suppose if you want those metrics!

have you tried the Vidometer app for iOS? is really nice for gps data overlay. i think they should add gpx export and other features, but it´s nice. has some good things like using the acelerometer to detect aceleration and horizon .
I used the vidometer app with my iphone in my pocket and the gopro at my chest, so the app will record the overlay over "black" video in the phone. and then i could overlay that video on the gopro footage.

yes, i have multiple gpx recording apps on my iphone ( and i also use my garmin gps to record gpx). i was just comenting that the app vidometer need this funcion too, since it adds the overlay on the video but not allow to export the gpx. and it would be nice to do both things on the same app

vidometer app records the video with the overlay. it has some different data layouts to select from to show different data like speed, aceleration, compass, horizon line, etc. and in the pro version it also has different map overlays with 2d maps, or sattelite view, it´s a really nice app. but once you export the video, you cant have access the raw data to use in another software
