    I know this isn’t the most recent video, however, I felt that I needed to come back and comment so you know this. I watched this video 2 or 3 days ago and your tip to use a bamboo kebab skewer to twirl up the string algae has been THE most helpful and effective suggestion I’ve found in my fight against string algae in my little tiny tank. Bar none. Seriously. I decided to try it out today while I was doing a water change and shirt if nuking the tank from orbit, nothing else has ever gotten so much of the string algae out of the tank. Especially with so little effort. My algae levels were slowly decreasing already, but now, suddenly, it’s like a totally different aquarium. My little CRS has been out grazing, my older one still hides, and my blue Japanese guppies are both swimming around far more freely. So thank you. With that one suggestion, you’ve given me hope and encouragement that I’m not completely messing up. (Darn new-fangled technology! I never had this much algae before I switched to LED lights!) 😀

    This video is so so useful and on point! And it corroborates my own theory about my fish tank: it has been suffering for some years with dead fish and dead plants and tons of algae all the time. I tried different things, nothing worked. Everybody was telling me the typical stuff: too much light, water changes, blah blah. And the part of the water changes is true, it helped, but didn't solved the problem. Til one day I decided to fertilize my plants: suddenly they all begun to bloom incredibly well and fast. The reason? They had the nutrients to grow, but were missing some minerals to develop. Once they had it, they begun to take all the nitrate from the water for themselves, outgrowing the algae so it disappeared and both the plants and the fish are now thriving.

    I dont agree with you on washing filter media in tap water but have used your H202 method and it works a treat on bba algae.
    Great tip on choosing plants for your water parameters too.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been doing this for about a year now and you can go onto any discus forum or google search it, contact time with our sponges and the tap isnt enough to kill bacteria , I know from doing invitro stuff that it takes alot more to kill it, I have to bleach rinse stuff and then wash samples in cuttings and then put them in containers that have been cleaned by steam to kill of mold and bacteria ...tap water will do very little to a sponge.

  • @chocochu2

    Thankx for posting this! I got 1-2 hairs hiding in my moss (keep plucking it but it comes back) and I think it's because my moss got too thick and some are dying with not enough light under.
    Also, do I just wait one more day after a shrimp molt before doing a 20% of water change?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just leave the water change to the next week when I see a female just molted or about to molt and yes you probably are correct on my you have some algae in the tank.

  • @neilizer
    @neilizer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thats was a great video Mark👍 So today iv learned it is ok to rinse your filter media under the tap. You said about the hornwort dying being the problem causing excessive nutrients! But what about all the leaves you have decomposing aswell? Also reference not water changing after a female has molted... How long should we wait?
    Thanks Neil

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
