    I didn´t really expect to laugh when watching such a video so I spilled all of my pasta on my keyboard because I was laughing so hard at that grandma "Oh, fiddlesticks".

    The general idea is quite ok. I'll have to disagree, however, with the example of the 'stop' sign. It can possibly be argued to belong to a symbolic category rather than 'pure sign'. Although it's correct to say that the relationship between the signified and signifier is an arbitrary one it does not necessarily means it's a conscious (or communal) decision. The 'stop' road sign - with its representative red colour may suggest 'danger' which might lead to blood (again red). Cheers :)

    The only video, that helped me understand this stupid theory. I swear this is so dumb... People like Saususse just had nothing better to do than separate ideas of things like sign to confuse students centuries later

    in that context the circle filled in with the colour red, at that particular junction signifies to the observer that that the signifier STOP is a special type of STOP .E.g it is so detached its almost superfluous to have sigificance as a word,it becomes more a shape whereas an anti war sign stuck at same height on a building "STOP the war",STOP means something .That sentence without stop would lose its context a red circle without stop could still function even with a set alien lines/marks

    When someone says "hello" or "no" or "and", the sound of each word is the signifier right? What is the signified for each word?

  • @brianboru62
    @brianboru62 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    theres something synesthestic about STOP in this context almost as if we automatically associate a red circle with 'that' STOP,(the word STOP is a red circle).

    I don't get it. I'm not a student, but it seems to me that the STOP sign does not necessarily mean "stop because you might hit another car". A STOP sign only says that you must stop there, it doesn't imply "because you might hit something". If a STOP sign implied "Stop because you might hit something", then no cop would give you ticket if you just run through the STOP sign when there is no pedestrian or automotive traffic at all. In fact, even in those circumstances, the cop will usually give you a ticket.

    • @taylaandtanna
      @taylaandtanna 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      joeschultz2 that's the point. The signifier is the sign telling you to stop, the signified is the implication that, if you don't stop, you may hit something.

    • @andrewjennings5160
      @andrewjennings5160 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I don't think the signified is the possibility of a calamity beyond the object of the stop sign. The signified is the idea of stopping, or that of stillness, the action of the car ceasing movement.
