      I'm currently learning to ride a motorcycle. I possibly just ride more or less 20 times only as of typing this comment. What if I do not feel the difference or cannot distinguish properly the sound difference of the engine? Is that because I'm just a beginner or there is something wrong with my brain capability of distinguishing the feel and the sound of the engine?

      Hi CycleCruza glad to see your keeping it on the safer side of riding now, wouldn't like you to have a fucked up day... but may I ask what exactly caused you to decide to slow down a bit? did you have a near miss that fucked up your day?

      Jonathan Luckins a cop gave me a get-out-of-jail-free card for speeding on some twisties. lol I got super lucky and got a cop that was also a rider, he even recommended I go to Tail of The Dragon. lol I made a vow to myself to try and cut out the speeding but it's been tough to lay off the throttle. Now I just mostly do fast starts and carve a couple little twisty roads around here. I understand why some riders trade in their supersport for a cruiser. lol

      Hey CycleCruza I was wondering if you could make a video on your thoughts about ABS brakes on bikes and if it's worth it. I'm thinking of getting a cbr600rr and wanted to know if the extra grand was worth spending. Sorry if you already made a video on it I couldn't find anything. Thanks and ride safe brother!

    • @CycleCruza

      DannyLrides ABS is great and I recommend it b/c you don't have to worry about proper braking in a panic situation which is great for new riders. i did a video talking about this: Motorcycle Anti-Crash Plan - Avoid An Accident with Skills - Braking Skills

    I love your "tips" on here and I noticed that You mentioned "engine-braking",however.........when I ride my sportbike,I've come into the habit of ALWAYS using "engine-braking" to slowing-down FIRST before even THINKING about touching my brake-handle!!! MOST Sportbikes these days,have SUCH HIGH Compression-ratio's on em,that the SECOND You get totally OFF the throttle,the bike almost INSTANTLY,starts to slow down VERY QUICKLY DUE to that very-high compression-ratio!!! So whether I'm IN town,or out on a country-road,whenever I need to do a "gradual" brake on the bike,I simply get OFF the throttle first and let it rev-down before even touching the clutch or brakes!!! Trust me guy,You'd be AMAZED at just how much LONGER your able to save the trouble of changing out your f/r brake-pads/rotors on your machine by letting your ENGINE do most of the braking most of the time!!! ;)

  • @Inspironator
    @Inspironator 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with you 100%. The only time I look down is to see if maybe I didn't shift into high gear, but usually I know which gear I'm in. Checking to see if I'm in high gear gives me better mileage when I don't need to accelerate at maximum.

    I am a new rider and I watcher your videos to help me get started. Your videos helped me so much. Your video about nit riding scared was a life saver. In the beginning i was afraid of cars not seeing me. So now I use the engine rev techniques that you talked about in another video. I was wondering if you could possibly do a video for female riders. As a girl I felt like I needed to prove myself on the road to all the men out on the road. As a noob it was very intimidating. You drop your bike and stall at lights. Very embarrassing. Especially when everyone realizes that you are a girl. It makes you scared to get on your bike and go for a ride. Just a suggestion. I am new to this. Thank you for making the amazing videos. Keep them coming.

    The biggest issue with listening to shift is for beginners. I just started riding and i love your videos, but my motorcycle came with a manual that suggest what speed to shift gears to each gear. What i have come to notice is that it is roughly 4000RPM. I feel comfortable with that sound and have learned that sound to never to have to look now but you have to start somewhere or you are going to take a while shifting too low or too high.

  • @HarmonicaMustang
    @HarmonicaMustang 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not really bike related, but I had similar habits when changing gear in my car. I had a nasty habit of subconsciously looking down at the stick whenever I changed gear. So I forced myself to look in the rear-view mirror instead which was more helpful. After some driving I found that driving though a town in at 30-40MPH worked great in 4th gear. I stopped looking at the tachometer before changing gear after finding and memorising the engine noise pitch at around 3000RPM which was perfect for the engine size. It's all about feel in the end. No matter if in a car or motorbike.

    I got my first bike about a month ago, 1980 Honda CB900C. Fucking love the thing but when I was teaching myself to ride, I had no idea how fast I was going because it doesn't have any cluster in the bars, no turn signals lol it's a bare bones bobber. So when my friends were asking how I knew which gear I'm in, I just told them I count with my foot! Fuck clusters! watching this channel has helped so much with learning more about handling and safety!

  • @LadyGamerZA

    Loved the video. I'm constantly amazed at people that needs a tachometer on their bikes to change gears. I haven't owned a bike with a tacho in over ten years. I guess that after riding bikes for over 30 years, one tends to rely more on the ear than the tacho.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! New riders seem to be more technical but the more you ride the more a rider should become more in tune with their bike without the need for tachometer checking.

    As someone who's by no means a long time rider but can ride pretty well. I never look at my rpm's when shifting. What I'd recommend you do is listen to the bike, it'll tell you when u need to shift. Only times I check my dash is if i'm in neutral at a stop light so I dont stall.

    I think Gear indicators are very useful at given situations. I was once riding a g650gs, in a road where i had to change gears every minute, and by switching them so much i forgot the actual gear i was in which almost led me to an accident when i left the clutch and the gear was too low.

  • @Tumpz
    @Tumpz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Actually if it's just for the fuel then as far as I know and have read it's better to stay in gear when coasting, newer bikes are fuel injected and on them the fuel is cut when coasting downhill or to a stop.

    • @qsballistics7545

    the rev counter is good at a quick glance to see what gear you're in sometimes when you've been shifting up and down in traffic i think everyone should learn on a bike without a gear indicator though

  • @jimbosavage
    @jimbosavage 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I completely agree with you about shifting by how the bike feels. I've found that my bike does best cruising around 5000 rpm (redline is 12000 rpm). I actually think the best RPM to cruise at is whatever RPM your bike is at in the top gear at around 65 mph or so. This RPM is usually provides the optimal brake specific fuel consumption (look it up) for the motor, which coincides with a good MPG and available power. I'm getting mileage in the low 30s MPG right now (should be mid 40s) but that's because I can't lay off the throttle :)

  • @robertcote9644
    @robertcote9644 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I totally agree about shifting using your butt for feedback. I do not, however, agree about coasting, at any time. I also agree with you about high visibility and wearing ear plugs. After 40 years, 12 bikes, and no ear plugs, "WHAT" has become a staple in my vocabulary. Too late for me, but anyone wanting to preserve their hearing should take your advice. Ride safe, Bud

    A lot of car guys shift by feel or sound (if we can hear it). Bikes are the same. Staring at the tach is a distration you don't need.

  • @ChumyMototo
    @ChumyMototo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think changing gears may also depends on the type of sports bike or brand models you're using. My 250r sport bike will stall if you'll run it on 5th gear with low RPM. so what I do is shift to 5th gear on clean highway with 7k to 8k RPM, then runs at 3rd or 4th gear with 5k to 6k RPM on downtown. But right clutching will also helps a lot, in times of "Stalling-engine sound", just press the clutch then give more RPM to prevent the engine from stopping.

    • @manuelsantellan8808
      @manuelsantellan8808 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      im a new rider and have a cbr250r and yes same issue, stalled on me a few times on 2nd going about 15-20mph at 2500rpm or so.. i was so surprised.. started to jolt before it stalled.

      That's kind of irrelevant seeing as how 2 stroke engines are rare in street bikes and not even used anymore really.
      I have a Yamaha 2 stroke dirt bike and I've been engine breaking on it for years, I'm not sure where you are getting your information from but it's certainly not true.

    • @computer5272
      @computer5272 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      amanoncrack I know how the engine work. But the insignificant amount of time spent engine breaking doesn't dry up the cylinders. It's clearly not an issue, I've never heard of a bike engine damaged by normal use.

      I think need is not a very good word for this situation. No one needs a gear indicator "I hope" but why not have one. It gives you extra information. Perhaps you have just got the bike and are not used to how it sounds well you could look at your rpm gage from time to time and use that to reference what sound is high rpm. Mind you i dont really feel the need to be sticking these lights on the dash but to each his own i guess.

    I found that if you downshift to a red light, you can wear out the back tire faster . I also found out as a FNG (fucking new guy) that when I shifted at a high rpm down low on the gears, she liked to get up on one wheel, all by herself, and that can set you up.........FARFUD...LOL!

      Wear out your back tire by downshifting? Maybe if you downshift from 6th to 1st at 60 mph and lock up the back wheel. Unless you're causing the tire to skid, it has no affect on tire wear.

    Does your 600 have a slipper clutch? My 1000RR has a slipper clutch, and that thing is awesome. Downshifts are never jerky. The slipper clutch takes care of bizness! Since you have very little engine-braking, it also helps you to get in the habit of using your BRAKES properly! Love it. I also really like my gear position indicator on the dash. I look at it more than I do my speedo, to make sure I am not speeding. If I am cruising around in 3rd gear, i'm pretty safe. If I am cruising around in 4th gear, I am risking a speeding ticket. ( Same RPM's. )
    Yeah, I could just look at the speedo, it's right there an inch away from the gear position indicator number, but for some reason... i'm just in the habit of always checking what gear I am in instead of the speedo! Funny huh.
    Supersport bikes are tricky. It is easy to get a speeding ticket on them, because they go fast effortlessly. 600's and literbikes both! They just want to FLY!
    You gotta work on holding them back. It takes effort and discipline NOT to speed on a supersport bike! Lots of FUN!

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree it takes a lot of discipline to lay off the throttle. I'm getting better but sometimes my testosterone is pumping me to crank the throttle. lol My bike doesn't have a slipper clutch but it doesn't really need one, shift up and down smooth as butter for me. The main reason I coast in the city is for fuel savings and it's fun to coast to me. lol I'm like a kid when I see a hill, I pull in the clutch and coast fly down the hill like I'm on a bicycle. lol Sometimes it's cool to just hear the wind and no engine going down a hill for me. As far as a gear indicator, personally, I think it's a bad habit for riders to be constantly glancing at the gear indicator. It's very easy to know what gear you are in by feel and sound.

    • @skylors808

    I want a gear indicator because it is embarrassing that I'm on 6th gear at mid range rpm and i suddenly shift for nothing. Yeah shifting from 1 - 6 I use my ear but when I lost counting (Because I am concentrating on the road) It really is embarrassing. My bike got 6 speed. I keep my rpm at low to mid range for fuel efficiency.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Vincent Aventurado Use feel instead, you should always know what gear you are in by feel and sound.

    • @Ojisan642
      @Ojisan642 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Don't think about it as embarrassing - think about it as "ok this is what it sounds like at 60 mph in 6th gear". Over time you will train your brain to know by sound if you are in 5th and have one more gear to go, or 6th and you don't need to shift up. And nobody is looking at your foot anyway, so don't be self conscious about learning. It's all about learning, man! Nobody is born an expert :)

    I agree that you don't need a tachometer, gear indicator, shift-lights and all that crap.. but rev-matching is fun and possibly better for your transmission and engine (unless you downshift at a low rpm). I also agree that you don't need to look at anything but listen to your engine to rev-match/shift. However, it is better to let the engine drive the rear wheels (by rev-matching) than let the rear wheels drive the engine (by shifting down and letting go/slipping the clutch). It's possible your wheels could lock-up during a bad downshift.. so just practice rev-matching time to time everyone! It could save your life if you get into the twisties ;]
    For city riding only.. your advice is good. But I prefer to stay in gear in case shit happens on my way to a complete stop.

    Each bike has a rpm where the gear will slip into place the smoothest, I feel like thats the best for my passengers and the engine. My GSXR 600 is 6500 rpms, my sporty 1200c is around 3500 and 3500 for my CRF450x too. Its when your fly wheel is spinning quick enough not to slow down then you change a gear. In sport bikes the fly wheel is so light and the crank is so short that you can almost shift quickly up to 6th and accomplish it smoothly but high torque motors like a vtwin or dirt bike need some rpms.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you would shift differently on a cruiser, however, it's still not necessary to use the tachometer. Ride by feel and listening to the engine and you will have no problems shifting.

    On a fuel injected bike the onboard computer will usually shut off fuel when engine breaking so its more economical to downshift.
    Carb bike though yes you save more by going into neutral.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my personal experience, engine braking reduces fuel efficiency. I've tested this riding on the same road in similar weather conditions. Coasting increases fuel efficiency. I've kept a fuelly log for my bike since day 1 of owning this bike and I also had a fuelly log for my former 2011 honda cbr250r.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, you never should coast in neutral. You always want be in gear and ready to power out.

    • @thebigwarthog
      @thebigwarthog 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read that it depends on the engine mapping & maybe the CBR needs relatively high rpms in order to make the fuel shut off?
      Maybe because it's a single cylinder engine they're more conservative about cutting off fuel to the engine?

  • @richarddarlington1139
    @richarddarlington1139 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    On a downgrade, do not, I repeat, do not coast in neutral or "with the clutch pulled in". Instead, use the gear that controls your momentum at a speed you are comfortable with. Always, always be in gear, never coast!

    Telling people to keep their RPMs low will just lead to people lugging their engines which is worse than red lining.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +6Twisted You can take it low but without lugging. 3500 is fine around town. I sold my cbr600rr with 23k miles and it still rode like new,.I've never had issues with any motorcycle I ever owned going back when I was a teenager. It depends on how you want to ride, with commuting, keep the rpms low but without lugging for better fuel efficiency or when it comes to riding the twisites, low gear -high rpm (without redlining of course). Once you become at one with your bike you'll feel and hear how to manipulate the gears to your benefit. Some newbs don't understand this and focus on the tach too much, with experience should come feel. The bike I had when I was a kid didn't have a freaking tach. lol

    • @6Twisted

      When I started learning, this was actually my biggest issue - I would change gears WAY too early and the bike would struggle and I actually managed to stall it many times at 20-40km/h. I then realised it was natural to change gears at 5-6k rpm, which is redline for a car, but normal for a bike. I think new riders are more likely to do that than redline, as the bike sounds like it's about to blow up way before redline, but again, that's just normal for a bike (I ride a CBR250R by the way)

    • @thunderbembo3406
      @thunderbembo3406 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you on 4th gear and keep your rpm on two.. climb a little inclined road. that makes motor lugging. but if youre on 5th gear.. on speed about 120km, while your on low rpm that will not lugging. follow your rexflex,ear..

    Bikes don't have an injector cut-off when you coast in gear? Like modern cars, I mean

    • @garthvater
      @garthvater 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most dont to avoid that annoying throttle lag when you pick up speed from a coasting deceleration. It will lag other wise. If you have ever driven a new low end car they tent to do this allot and in the higher end cars (like id say even 20000 and above) the computers are excellent at calculate the exact amount of fuel needed to avoid the lag. In a bike this problem is made worse by the lower power engines and small size gears. Super jerky with the minimal weight. Most bikes dont do this and the ones that do are just like the cars and use some. It does oc reduce gas used to a smaller amount but you should give it some has to downshift which is where the majority of the savings comes from. When you give it gas well, no amount of the computers doing work will stop you hitting the gas. Putting the clutch in uses the same amount of gas as if your idol. Driving in the city the savings adds up.

    Idk why people got a problem with this. Both in cars and on a bike. Like it saves so much gas and especially in a bike a clutch is not as expensive compared to the gas you save. I mean i drive a 93 ranger and its only rated at 16 mpg. I get about 24, in the city. And thats on the bull shit cheap gas with the 10% tree hugging ethanol mix.

    If I'm not mistaken, the voice recording is done while you were riding? If you are, what headset gear are you using?

    That's right cyclecruza!!. I like the way you shift because it's safe and fuel saving. A lot of guys riding on bike are always speeding to a red light or the next stop sign. If your cruising around town. There is no need to speed your ass off unless your looking to die. CycleCruza
