  • What Happened To Carlos? (US Open Recap)
Outmuscled and outplayed by Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros and then giving it right back to him in Wimbledon, the stars were aligning for a third Alcaraz-Djokovic Grand Slam final showdown at the US Open. However, tennis is never predictable and a certain Russian got in the way of that, playing his best tennis and beating Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final in the us open. Did the pressure get to Alcaraz or did Medvedev just play out of his skin? What’s next for Carlitos? There’s a lot for us to talk about….

I think Alcaraz looked past his opponent. He was hungry for the Djokovic Final that he didn’t zero in on Medvedev. He beat Medvedev at Wimbledon because he was focused on the task at hand. At the US Open, he was shell shocked after choking a very tight first set and threw away the 2nd set as a result.

Yes Alcaraz didn't take Medvedev seriously since he owned him easily in their previous meetings. But Medvedev managed to play the match of his life and caught Alcaraz by surprise. He is young and most likely won't make that mistake again. Normally Carlos' B game can beat Medvedev fairly easily, but he still needs to play his A game because you never know when any player will bring out their best tennis.

Alcaraz is young, he's still learning. Sinner is 2 years older, but goes out in R16 and no comments...
...Alcaraz had heaps of pressure as #1, defending champion, huge expectations from Wimbledon and a Djokovic final rematch. He's doing an amazing job handling all this - and shows a desire to learn.
Djokovi1c's still learning at 36. Instead of being haunted by 2021 US Open loss, he used that as motivation to do better. Medvedev knew it too. The pressure was now on Medvedev - whose main goal would have been to beat Alcaraz up until then.
I'm a huge Djokovic fan, but I like Alcaraz alot. What an experience for him being able to learn from Djokovic first hand - no amount of tv watching can provide this. It is going to be interesting to see how he manages his career going forward.
He'll definitely need to listen to his body or pay the consequences in the future. Again, who better to learn from than the 🐐.
Go Djokov1c 🤞 400 weeks #1 would be insane, but I know that's not the main goal. A 40th Masters and 7th ATP Finals though would surely help! 😉👍

@@colethomas903: it is just drama bro...
"What Happened to Jannick?" isn't clickbait. Plus Djokovic is beating Sinner.
Djokovic learned from 2022 Wimbledon and beats Sinner in straight sets in 2023. Alcaraz v Djokovic though is live drama. He's the new challenger.
Personally, I'm interested in what happened to Sinner at the US Open. What about Tsitsipas and Rune too?!?
Why did Sinner not challenge, when he finally wins ATP1000 event in North America? Tsitsipas starts 2023 well, but then fizzles virtually every year. Why?
I had a laugh at Wilander recently. He concluded before Djokovic's most recent win in a posting that his losses @ the US Open simply could be because Europeans traditionally don't do well there.
Mmmm, simply, maybe that's why Sinner and Tsitsipas lose there too! 🤔
But no one calls Wilander out. All of Djokovic's six US Open losses are to Europeans! 🤣
In fact Europeans have won 19 of the last 20 US Opens.

Please compare the ATP rankings from 2011 to 2023. Besides Djokovic (36 years old) and Medvedev, there is no real opponent for Alcaraz. Djokovic was surrounded by tennis opponents at the highest level in 2011. That is a big advantage for Alcaraz. He will never has to challange a Big Three Era.

I would argue that is a big disadvantage for alcaraz. the reason why djokovic is that good is because he had to cut his teeth against the literal cream of the crop, got his ass handed to him for years, and then built that iron will and fundamental game that we know and respect now, from those times. this is why, even as a fan of big 3, I was delighted to see alcaraz beat nole at wimbledon. like the (character) joker needed a better class of criminals in the dark knight, alcaraz needs more djokovic-level opponents to really get his game to the absolute greatness level

Since when has defeat become a reason for people to ask, 'What happened to him?' Although he is a fantastic player, he is just a man and no one is unbeatable. But if you are still wondering who is to blame for his defeat, I shall tell you - the Western media. They are desperately looking for someone who will be better than Novak. For them, after only two Alcaraz's Grand Slam titles, it was enough to proclaim him as the new GOAT. They started to write about him as if he is above all and unbeatable. At that moment, Novak had 23 Grand Slam titles, and they still cannot admit that Novak is the GOAT and continue to search for some reason just not to admit how great he is.
So, as soon as Alcaraz becomes aware that defeats are also a part of sport, just as victories are, and that all opponents deserve respect, he shall be one of the greatest. He is young and has the potential to win so many Grand Slam titles and other titles. I wish him all the best.

What did Djokovic do to win against Alcaraz is to take medical timeouts and toilet breaks, which worked in his favour at Cincinnati. Laslo Djere itself surprised Djoko in intitial rounds of US open. So, how imbecile one can be to be sure on ‘what if’ and ‘what could’ rather speaking on what is. He simply lost in a hard-fought battle to a highest quality opponent who played an inspired match. Even the best sometimes loses, so let's not make this kind of title and give undue pressure to the youngster (or whoever).

Very interesting to see you pointing out how Alcaraz loses topspeed with his first serve toss up!
Same goes for his difficult forehand swing compared to Federer.
If Alcaraz doesn't improve on these 2 points this could very well be THE difference in winning less Grand Slams in later stages of his carreer, because then it takes too much strength to pull of these difficult shots all the time..

He knew he wouldn't be able to play! He even said so. I don't judge him for that but it was still his choice. Don't hang that over Carlos' head. It's not his fault Djokovic was not there. All Carlos could do was play his best against opponents that were actually there. He beat those opponents and won the title. I mean, what do you want him to do? Carols came into the US Open overconfident and underprepared. His path to the semis was too easy and no one challenged him. Zverev arguably playing his best tennis since his horrific injury and couldn't get a set off of him.
Medvedev clearly came in well prepared and Alcaraz could not problem solve. The first set was all on serve and Alcaraz figured he'll just take it in the tiebreak. And when he lost the first set and was in shock and lost focus in the 2nd set. By the time he could turn things around it was too little too late.
Carlos still has a lot to learn. Winning on pure talent is not enough. And it's not just to be in better physical shape so he doesn't cramp. To strategize, to solve your opponent, to fix your flaws during a match takes preparation and experience. I hope he takes this one on the chin and bounces back to finish the year strong.

You can look at the stats of a match to tell how one won/lost but it doesn’t tell the root cause of the loss. The key stat that showed why Alcaraz lost to Medvedev was the second serve win percentage. This stat in general tells who was better in a fair rally, meaning no advantage from the serve. Medvedev outplayed Alcaraz in this category. But what’s the difference between this match and the one at Wimbledon? The hard court is slower, allowing Medvedev to get to more heavy balls from Alcaraz, thus frustrating Alcaraz, making him lose patience, hitting harder but then making more errors.
