Me too, and still works fine, battery life not as good as it was in 2011 (but that was 13 years ago). It still holds a charge, but not 6 weeks like in the beginning, and I can read several books before recharging. Loved that it has speakers, and you were able to go online, check your email, etc. with it. I was even able to online chat with a friend of mine while out of town. Great product.
The best free books on kindle are The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Moon Dance, Dracula, Wuthering Heights, Alice's adventures in Wonderland and The 3 Musketeers.
Getting mine tomorrow! Traded in my basic Kindle 4 for some money at best buy and put it towards this. What people don't understand or considerate is that its a kindle, its meant for reading, not meant to be top speed but an easily paced device. I love em, amazon is great, can't go wrong.
@TheSlipKnot981 it does not have a microphone--I believe you're referring to the headphone jack or the speakers. The headphone jack is for listening to mp3 files, audio books, or the text-to-speach feature. The speakers can be used for the same features as the headphones when you don't have or don't want to use headphones.
@piplup10203854 One thing to remember. The Kindle Basic is both NoTouch and NoKeyboard. It has a pop up character diagram in alphabetical order, from which you pick one character out of the line-up and then another character. If you like to do searches or make short notes on your books, the Basic is a no-no. Unlke the $20-higher Touch, it has no music, no text to speech. But also, it does have a web browser, unlike the Nook Simple Touch.
@octilichious the whole point of the E ink display is that it doesn't have a backlight. It's supposed to be just like reading a book and it doesn't hurt your eyes if you read it for a hour or so. Having a backlight would defeat the purpose of the E ink display and would make your eyes tired no matter the display
I'd get a Kindle Touch but I'm waiting to see if Amazon will announce Kindle color, or the new backlit edition. This will be my first e-reader since I'm still hesitant on getting one since I have a crap-ton of books... What can I say, I'm a traditionalist when it comes to reading. :)
depends if you want just a reader or a tablet. I like my kindle touch because those lcd screens hurt my eyes if I stare at them too long. The ink like screen on the touch doesn't. Look at the paperwhite or touch if you want just a reader, or the fire if you want some tablet features.
@LivingDeadBeat99 Yes, you can still sideload even non-Amazon books (true for 4 years) on any Kindle. Best you can use WiFi and download them direct to the Kindle through its web browser. PDFs can be too large so those have to be done via computer and emailed to your Kindle. Word docs are converted by Amazon at no charge to send to your Kindle and they sync them on devices and back up your notes if you want.
get the 4th kindle. not only is it lighter but cheaper and more responsive. the kindle touch is slow on the the turn, scroll, and zoom moves, so you dont know if you turned the page.
My old nook simple touch (that somebody stole :( ) also had a 800 x 600 screen and it was very easy to read. You won't notice the pixels at all unless you look at it very closely.
I just bought the KT and I just noticed, the thing has no back lighting for reading with the lights off. Am I missing something? Other than that I love it. My screen is very quick to respond, no delays. Maybe they fixed that slow response issue. It has been a few months since your review. Anyway, appreciate the review, thanks...8D
I don't understand your question...do you mean if headphones are included? No. But the kindle has a standard 3,5mm jack so you can just use any kind of headphone..
@nero314100 when you unlock or lock your device, a green led light on the bottom of the kindle flashes. The led is there for sure. Watch the video, and he will explain that there is a microphone on the bottom.
Thank you for your video, I was doubting between the cheapest one and the touch version. But seems like this video made it clear that I be buying a touchscreen one.
@anieb actually, the nook does have a web browser. type a URL in the search field and it opens it up in a browser. BTW, a web browser is pretty stupid on a an e-ink display. The nook touch is better, because its better at being an e-reader. That's what more important than having extras. Also what you fail to mention is that the Kindle touch at $99 has Ads. and to get one without ads you pay $139, whereas the the nook has no ads no matter what.
@techdude6693 You certainly CAN side-load even non-Amazon books from the computer to the Kindle. Furthermore, you can DOWNLOAD them from websites, direct to the Kindle. The Nook has no web browser so that isn't possible with the Nook.
@HollisterSupporter Maybe the Kindle Keyboard 3g would be a good choice. I'm getting the Touch because I like touch screens, and I REALLY don't like the nook. The Nook Simple Touch doesn't have anything fancy (like web browser, cool features, etc.) it's just an E-Reader. The Kindle Touch doesn't have THE most responsive screen out there, but hey! It's an E-Reader,not an iPad. In my opinion,it boils down to whether or not you would like a Touch screen.
@DetroitBORG Actually, Amazon sells the NookColor and e-Ink nooks on their site. Have for quite a while and I have links to them on my webpage for about 1.5 years.
@harittube The idea of the kindle is more 'carry books everywhere' as opposed to 'cheap books'. That said, the ebooks on amazon are generally cheaper than the paperbacks.
I will probably get this one or the fire. Which do you think is better? Or actually I should ask if I was to buy a Kindle what would you suggest is the best one?
How do you think the Kindle Touch compares to the Nook Simple Touch you reviewed in the summer? Which one would you recommend and why? Also how does the display on Touch compare to the one of the Kindle 3? I'm reading on other reviews that it's muddier and not as clear. Are you finding this to be the case? Keep up the great reviews!
Love your review! I thought it was very in depth and helpful. I know you said in the video you would prefer the touch over the other kindles but in one of your comments I saw you said to just stick with the basic kindle. Between the Kindle touch and the $79 kindle, which do you prefer?
@Sumfera What you say is true. Amazon calculated for 1 hour per day, for the last 3-1/2 yrs but B&N changed the calculation to use only 30 minutes per day for its comparison sheets, so Amazon adjusted theirs to make a comparison using the same time basis. The whole thing is silly since few read for only 30 minutes a day.
@DetroitBORG My Kindle Touch is incredibly crisp, black and clear. The Nook Touch was just dark grey on light grey. I like my NookColor but not that Nook Touch. ALSO, how can you seriously say it's generally a better device when the Kindle Touch has a very decent web browser on it via WiFi, and it has Music and Audible both on it, when the Nook has No speakers, No audio to speak of. I mean, you should be pointing these things out in case they're important to people.
Does this model allow to read from internet websites? Because all those that I tried can't load just google loads correctly but there's nothing to read there.
Do you think that there will eventually be software that would show the web in landscape? Portrait is too narrow and it is frustrating when you try to read your e-mails or browse the net.
thats because you have to by a amazon kindle wall adapter that you plug the usb cable into. but if you don't want to you can just plug it into a pc and that will charge it although I didn't need to by a wall adapter because I have a phone charger that will plug into my kindle :)
Awesome thorough & HQ review (as usual), so thanks for that! :) Must say though, I really wanted to like this thing but with the slow interface it's not a good enough upgrade in my opinion from my graphite Kindle 3 w/ keyboard. If the interface, refresh and page turns was faster, then I would totally get it.
Mine just quit working at only a year and a half old and Amazon won't so anything but offer me a"slight discount for refurbished models. Not exactly what I wanted to waste $150 on and then end up with a paperweight
@muertomaniaco i know you weren't asking me, but thought i'd provide my input. i have a kindle dx, so not sure about this particular model. anyway, you can email documents, including pdfs, to your kindle device. if you put "convert" in the subject line of the email, amazon will convert it into the kindle format. like you, i work with a LOT of documents (usually Word documents and pdfs), so this was a big deal for me also. i've got hundreds of documents i've emailed to my kindle
@DetroitBORG why do you like nook better? is it faster? also, if you could comment on the speed of writting notes to the text id really appreciate it, im buying one of those and for me thats my main concern. thanks! great review by the way
Is it required to connect to a wifi network to browse the web even tho you have 3G? (it won't let me browse unless i connect to a wifi network). Thanks!
@anieb Recommended reading is not the same as a blatant ad thrown at the bottom. Its tailored to what you've gotten before. Not to mention you wrote 3 long comments over the web browser. Have you actually owned a Nook Simple Touch?? I replaced my Kindle 3 with one and I like it so much better. That said though, I still prefer my Kindle Fire to the NookTablet
I'm still using this device. The home button doesn't work anymore, battery life has greatly shortened and great spalling of the plastic surface of the USB cable.
@techdude6693 I should add that the new Kindle Touch web browser (quite fast for text lookups and w/ text-article views in readable mode) is still available via WiFi -- and Wiikipedia is always available for free via no-charge 3G, globally.
@cbcboy77 People are right that the Kindle Touch does not do landscape currently (customer reps have said they're working on it but that can take forever). However, a nice Android feature is that you can pinch-zoom them or double-tap to get larger fonts while expanding the text-body to fit the width of the screen.
@tomnikond600 i believe it is essentially the same thing due to the nature of the e-ink. but definitely turn off the wifi and/or 3g for the best battery life.
I heard you mentioned in the video that the txt to speech function only works on authorized books. Will it work on those free classics or pdf, txt that I put into the kindle touch? Thx Mine is still on the way.

Found one in the work ewaste pile among other tablet tech, I now use it for reading manga. It's still a cool piece of tech.
does this model contain frontlight?
@@nergizkenno creo, es muy antiguo para ello.

@@mariarajput3837 Those are heavier to me than a Kindle reader. I prefer reading my books on the Kindle reader.
@@mariarajput3837 in reality books ocupy very little space, so you dont really need for it to be 2gb, i have generation 4 shown on the video (2011)
Excellent way of presenting. You've got some great skill in captivating the audience's attention.
Love these e-ink readers. the screens are so easy on the eyes.
The best free books on kindle are The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Moon Dance, Dracula, Wuthering Heights, Alice's adventures in Wonderland and The 3 Musketeers.

is the screen scratched easily??

also does it have a builtin light for night reading?

does it have any "bookmark" options?

Hey I like your reviews! I was wondering, which one to you read on most? I have a Paperwhite and love it
hii, I have a one Question
is it has a recording software in it, as it has a built in microphone ?
the only thing about the kindle touch is it FREEZES sooooo much
can i save pdf books on it? I'm not very techy, but looking for something for my son for just reading.
No. You can only get books off of the Amazon store on the Kindle and you can also put MP3 files on it.
Earlene Bonas-Johnson yes you can I have plenty of PDF files on my phone, I just connect it to my laptop and transfer them on the kindle
I find it odd how slow the refresh rate is on Kindles, comparing it to the display on my Pebble Classic (also e-ink).
Vynncent Murphy the Pebble has a much smaller screen to refresh, that means shorter refresh times.
when r u getting a kindle dx
How to adjust the brightness?
what's the mic for?
