    I just finished putting together a 1960 John Deere 440 IC crawler, engine rebuild, trans, undercarriage and hydraulics, Squatch, you were some of my inspiration to take that thing on. I know where an old cat D3 is and I believe the older gentleman is finally in a position to sell it. If we can meet on a good price Im going to buy it and restore it. I absolutely love old diesels..
    Thank you for all the work you put into these videos, your knowledge and attention to detail is first rate. Its good to meet a fellow restorer that wont cut corners and wont compromise on quality in workmanship.
    Wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and greetings from South Carolina

    Block was likely cast at Wilson Casting in Lansing Mi. Top of the line outfit that did block and head castings for Willys-Overland, Continental and many, many others. They had a secret sand formula that was the envy of other foundries.

    Hello, Squatch. I love your videos. I am constantly impressed by your attention to detail and supreme organizational approach. Obviously you have devoted a great deal of time, energy, thought, money, knowledge, and skill to the preservation of these old machines. You are a credit to the preservationists who keep alive the appreciation of the relics of the mechanical age. May you and your resurrected machines run well, for as many years as possible. Good Luck and Best Wishes to you and yours.

      Cat still has a surprising number of new parts available, but you have to do all the leg work and bring them the old part numbers because their modern parts system has no way of looking up things that old. Just find a parts manual that covers the serial number of your machine and you’ll be good to go. Other sources are FP Smith in California, General Gear & Machine in Idaho, or Antique Crawler Parts in Wyoming 👍

    Since you have all the blocks out. And have a lathe and mill. Why not get a chunk of round to make a bolt to the flange tool or even bar stock across the flange and a T shaped support to drop into the block to support a boring bar. You have three good blocks to verify the fit. For boring the bearing bore oversize and also thrust cutting the inside fir a flanged custom bearing.

      With unleaded gas, would you want to install valve seats, instead of using the cast iron block, as the valve seat?

    • @waynep343
      @waynep343 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stuff6782 the starting motor may already have replaceable valve seats... if it has valve seats integral to the block.. it will probably last for years as long as the valves close and the valve seats are not so wide that the face pressure is not so spread out that any carbon holds the valve off its seat.. the run time on these engines is so limited that it should take decades for issues like valve seat welding to the valve face and pulling chunks out of the seat.. i have never been in a pony motor.. so i don't know if they have replaceable seats.. if they do.. then i would want to source out something a little better than 1930s cast iron replacements..

    • @skylinefever
      @skylinefever 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if the starter engine had no hardened valve seats, would it be used long enough to need seats between each rebuild? For all I know, the engine has soft seats, but they could only need a re-cut every during a rebuild. After a few rebuilds, it might then need hard seats installed.

    On the front bearing you might drill and tap a 5/16 hole and install a set screw with loctite, half in the bearing half in the housing. I know it’s not original, but it’ll take an awful torque load and doesn’t let the bearing move in any axis. Keep up the good work!

    On the same idea of the old speedo cable for cleaning, if you have a friend that plays the guitar, ask them for the ends they clip off when restringing or even the old strings. If they play electrics, you can get some wire down to .007 and it's rather stiff for poking through small holes. The wound strings are just like the casing on your speedo cable. Depending on the string gauge sets, you can get some wound wire down to .018. If acoustic the sizes run bigger. Great for carb work.

    Why don't you build repair sleeves for the bearing bore that include the bearing pin and oiling flange. You would need some indexing feature on the sleeve. The index could just be a couple of threaded fasteners or pressed in pins. Once installed you would probably have to finish bore it. I would probably braze the crack in the block prior to oversizing the bore for the sleeve.

  • @waynep343
    @waynep343 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    this is 8 months old.. do you have a spare front cover that perhaps the bore is bad.. any chance of indicating it in on the lathe and boring a bigger hole in it.. pressing in a tube that has a shoulder machined on it that will allow you to go in with some sort of tool to bore the bad block bores to a decent oversize so you can create an oversized bearing OD and a crank or undersized bearing ID.. perhaps the tube is short of the bearing bore and you can insert a boring tool like is used in line boring bars or cylinder boring bars.. to cut the damaged bore oversize to restore blocks. a precision bearing could be used on the bar to keep it centered.. you might end up using prefinished ID hydraulic cylinder tube to give you a perfect tool if you can find a perfect bearing OD or create a sleeve for the bearing OD. where the tube goes thru the cover.. it might need a nut as a retainer .. but a really good press it would do it..

    I would be nice if there was 2 ports that you could add a water filter may look odd but will help the moter last.

    7:48 Anybody know what that casting mark is? I feel like I've seen it before, but can't place it.

    Have you thought about getting a patreon account? All of us love the content you make and we know it’s expensive.

    Need to find a complete running pony motor for a 1948 D7 Caterpillar serial #3T8644, kinda rare around here from that era the rest have been scrapped
    The original is seized and missing to many parts on this starting engine
    To start the big 4 cylinder diesel engine hopefully NOT STUCK
