- Sonic Youth was an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, and rounded out the core line-up. In their early career Sonic Youth were associated with the no wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound.

If you don't want a totally predictable collection filled with predictable selections then this is a great representation from the band's early years when people still called them a 'no wave' band. Whoever assembled this shows a real knowledge of and great taste in those distant murky days. This fills a real void among their posthumous discography. A great listen as well as a service.
most of these songs were used in my young adult years at the initial phases of drug induced highs lol

Great photo from when they really were youths.Thurston Moore was a head taller than the other three. I guess he'd be the center in their basketball team.
One of my favorite bands, twelve years after they broke up. My wife can't stand them, so I don't play their music if she's in the same room. Preserved the marriage.

Not a bad playlist! There are a few I wouldn't have included -- why Kissability instead of Cross the Breeze?!?!?!? -- but otherwise a good way to pass an hour and a half. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I haven't listened to Bad Moon Rising in a while. "I'm Insane" is just heavy and raw.

have you heard the vocals all these no wave bands had? bad vocals that sound like they're coming from an alien drowning in morphine are a hallmark of the genre lol
all i know is, hearing Kim Gordon's voice was what sucked me in as a kid. I stumbled upon Kool Thing at the library when I was like 13 and that detached, fake coolness was the epitome of whatever it was i needed to hear at the time. her vocals were always pretty much the same i feel.
